hi - I apologize I do not remember your name (I remember discussion about your

husbands job, move to NY, being near family, etc)....but I felt led to offer my

viewpoint on the testing issue...

I am a mom, my youngest (17) has jra...but I am also a grandma....here in CA our

state testing is STAR, and it too is a BIG deal, especially since so much of the

school's funding is determined by how the students score. I admit I used to

stress a bit about it, trying to keep well, worrying if she did not get

adequate sleep, etc.but I have adjusted my perspective. A couple years ago, one

of my granddaughters (2nd grade!) began having stomachaches and tears before

school she stressed so during testing...she told us how everyday the teacher

told them how important it was they did well, yada, yada....recorded phone

messages from the school reminding parents to give the children plenty of rest,

good breakfast...regular school work ceased several weeks prior to testing so

students could be " reviewed and prepared. " As I see it, our kids are being

stressed out and having their regular learning altered all for the competition

of state funding. So, personally, unless you

are deeply concerned that Kailey's results are going to affect her class

placement somehow, I would just do what you reasonably can (rest, encouragement,

etc), but I would not take my child off of her medication and risk pain or a

flare for state testing. I will get off my soap box now.....(sorry).

I'm sorry about the loss of your Boston Terrier - it is amazing what our

children can teach us, isn't it? Especially it seems in terms of loss or life

adjustments. I hope things work out at the end of the school year so you and

Kailey can be together full-time with your husband again.

It's been awhile, hope everyone is doing well. Welcome

to all the new members. Just wanted to get some opinions, Kailey was

on antibiotics for a while with a throat infection and taken off MTX

and Enbrel. While she was off the meds her school work seemed to

improve. Well now FCAT's start next week, anyone from Florida knows

the importance of these tests and the horrible stress the kids are

put under for them, anyway my DH wants to take her off her meds again

just for this week and next week just in case it wasn't a coincidence

she seemed to focus better when off them. A huge part of me agrees

but at the same time I don't want her to start having unnecessary

pain either. What do you all think and have any of you had any

similar experiences you can share.

Update: DH started the job in NY in November; we are still trying to

finish out the school year down here and hoping for a turn in the

housing market which does not seem likely to happen anytime soon.

It's been rough be we are all hanging in there hoping the end result

will lead us where we are supposed to be. Christmas was rough, the

week before Christmas I had to make the difficult choice to let my

Best Friend (Boston Terrier) go and DH was not here. That was the

toughest thing I ever had to do. Kailey was my rock though, I learn

so much from her. She is just amazing. Other than her throat

infection which caused a flare she has been doing pretty well. She is

very stressed out about these FCAT tests right now, (and she is only

in 3rd grade!) and I am trying to find a way to stress their

importance while making it not seem like such a big deal that she

needs to get stressed out. Thanks to the 504 they are making some

accommodations for her and I hope they help.

Well there I go again, I pop in once in a blue moon and just ramble

on. LOL. Sorry.

Thank you . Seems like CA does have the same issues with the

school system competing via state testing. I think it is horrible

what they do the kids and the teachers. In FL in some grades 3rd

being one of them you get left back if you fail the FCATs and they

stress this to the children. I was talking about this with my SIL

though who works for the school system and stating that some children

just do not test well especially under such pressure and she said she

has seen where the parents and teachers have gotten together in cases

where the child has done very well all year long and then failed the

FCAT and had the rule overturned in those cases.
