Guest guest
Beth, did have Fun when at the Conferences. Colleen would be the one to ask about Activities that will be going on there. Since he is a Teen I would think they would be doing some fun thing's for his age. As He will be in the Teen group. He will get to meet other Kid's with his interest as well. It is good to meet up with the JRA Group as some are his age and they can get to know each other. Parents can make a Meeting place and talk as well. I can bet he will get more out of the Conference than you think. :-). Guest guest
Beth, The teen activities are not " Arts and Crafts " If they are artsy....they are teen type arts! I have a 13 year old girl, but the kids have a blast! Especially if they are a bit social at all. Last year they listed on the agenda. Last year the teen kids got to the hospital and work on the " dummies " and do activities there. It was really cool. In fact they were on the local news. For sure Hannah & I and most likely Mike as well. We are not sure about Jay, our 13 year old. Can anyone tell me what kinds of activities are planned for teens? He is not into crafts and that would bore him to tears (literally). He does best when kept active as opposed to low-key activities (he's an athletle and on the go a lot). We are pricing airfair and there are some good deals so we want to book soon. Thanks for the input. Guest guest
: thanks for the response. We are still budgeting so it may come down to that. I'm sure he'll have a good time. And yes, he is quite social. He will talk to anyone who will listen! Guest guest
Thanks Robbin. I'm sure he would have fun meeting other teens. I will have to see what they offer and what our budget holds before we decide. He has always been supportive of Hannah and empathetic that she does not really know what's wrong with her. He is quite good with the special needs kids at his school and thinks he may want to work with those types of kids when he's older. Sending prayers & happy thoughts, Beth :-) Re: conference activiy question Beth, did have Fun when at the Conferences. Colleen would be the one to ask about Activities that will be going on there. Guest guest
Hi Beth- I don't want to be too specific with the activities - because we're still in the process of raising the funds for all of the activities we want to do. I don't want to get hopes up in case we have to scale back on the extras - and I will say that at the moment we are aiming pretty high! If all goes well, we'll be including a family fun night that will be good for ALL ages, with many different activities - something to make everybody happy. And, as opposed to the crafts that you might envision, we are shooting for a true art component that will bring professional and college age artists in to work with the kids in a variety of mediums, culminating in a gallery type display of all the work. For the older kids, there may be photography, digital music production and short video production - There's a decent pool at the hotel as well, and likely there will be swimming activities. There are experienced activity leaders working to plan for all the age groups - the are younger and much hipper than I! But I know they are really taking into consideration what each age will enjoy...and the staff from the National office have years worth of experience and attendee feedback to help make sure that all the bases will be covered. I hope that helps.... I know others will chime in as to how siblings in their family have enjoyed the conference. My daughter Caitlin is only 9 and Jack is 5 - this will be his first time. I'm not sure how much time you'll have in California before or after the conference, but I'd be happy to come up with some additional ideas for play in the area. Looking forward to meeting you this summer! Best hopes- Colleen Beth Yohnk <yohnkmom@...> wrote: Hi everyone: We are still contemplating how many of us are going to conference. Guest guest
Hi Colleen: Thank you so much for responding. I just was not sure what to expect for a 13 year old and appreiciate the information. Those types of activities are right up his alley. We will have to see what our finances bring. We are very excited to come to our first confernce even though we don't really have a diagnosis. We are also attending our first Family Fun Day here locally in a few weeks.
