_ATLANTA -- The government has agreed to pay the family of an autistic girl

from a federal fund that compensates people injured by vaccines.

U.S. officials generally reject the idea that the vaccines cause autism. But

they say that in this case, the shots worsened an underlying disorder that

led to autism-like symptoms.

The parents of the 9-year-old Georgia girl described Thursday how their

hearts were broken as they watched her deteriorate into an irritable,

odd-behaving toddler after she got several childhood shots.

Terry Poling of Athens, Ga., the girl's mother, said in a news conference

that suddenly, her daughter was no longer there.

Poling and her husband, Jon, said their daughter, Hannah, has been diagnosed

with autism.

The Polings said five simultaneous vaccinations in July 2000 led to Hannah's

autistic behavior. She was about 18 months at the time.

have consistently maintained that vaccines are safe, and a lawyer representing

them said this week that there was no change in that position.

The Athens couple acknowledged their legal case never got to the point where

evidence was introduced or argued. Jon Poling, a 37-year-old neurologist,

called on the government to remove thimerosal -- a mercury-based vaccine

preservative -- from all flu shots.

Thimerosal has already been removed from other vaccinations given to

children.

I don't want to start any heated debate but I am so glad that a story

like this one is finally beginning to be picked up by the media. It

is a long time coming in my opinion.

Many of you already know that Isabelle had adverse reactions at 6

mos. of age following her Dpt, Hep B, Polio, combined shot. She

stopped making eye contact, smiling, and arm flapping; it continued

for 6 months. We had a medical exemption to avoid further

vaccinations since they couldn't pin-point exactly what vaccine

caused the high-pitched screaming, fever, leading to her

hospitalization. I truly believe in my heart that had we continued

injecting her with more vaccines that she would have never come back

from the world she had gone too. I can't put it into words but my

daughter " wasn't there " . Many people remarked that " it was as if she

was looking right through them " .

I want to clarify the last statements of this article because it is

a " half-truth " . Yes, vaccine manufacturers were forced by congress

to discontinue using thermiserol in vaccines in 2000. HOWEVER, there

was a big loop hole --- they could continue to use there stock pile

of already made vaccines. For instance, Isabelle's records include

the written proof that the vaccine she had received in 2004 was

manufactured in 1998! It was made my Pastuer and it contains 27

times the FDA approved limit of thermiserol/mercury for infants.

As I said, no debate intended here. Vaccines have saved many lives.

But until they do not contain thermiserol in any form (detectable or

undetectable as the leaflets will describe), and until they do not

contain other preservatives such as formaldyhide, and other nasty

chemicals, I will be advocating for vaccine schedules that take each

child into account and not just a " herd schedule " such as we have

today.
