Iain and Roache and their children liese and got the surprise of their lives on Tuesday, when the Channel Nine ‘Domestic Blitz’ crew arrived and announced the family had been nominated to receive a huge home makeover. “I was making scones.. and then next thing, we heard on the megaphone our names being called,†Mrs Roache said. “I can’t remember if liese or I opened the door, but then [Cam] and [Kraft] were standing at the bottom of the stairs saying ‘come down, come down’.†The Roaches were nominated by family and friends, for their hard work in establishing the Arthritis NSW branch ‘Kids Get Arthritis Too’ – a support group for families with children affected by juvenile arthritis. The couple formed the group after experiencing difficulty finding support and information, when their own daughter liese was diagnosed with the disease. Speaking to the Hawkesbury Gazette on Wednesday during the renovation process, Domestic Blitz host Cam said the program was all about helping out Australian’s like the Roaches. “They’re a lovely family and they do a lot of hard work,†Mr Cam said. “That’s the sort of people we tend to go and see – really good hard working Aussies that have some problems, but are still working for other people at the same time.†With some help from the Hawkesbury City Council who pushed through building approvals quickly, from Tuesday to Thursday the cast and crew of Domestic Blitz, along with a big group of handymen, worked tirelessly to revamp the Roache’s property on Drive while the family enjoyed some pampering in Sydney. When the Roaches returned on Friday afternoon, they found the front and backyard re-landscaped and re-furnished, and their kitchen, lounge room and study re-decorated. “We’re completely blown away with what they’ve done,†Mrs Roache said. “I love it – it’s beautiful.†For liese and her brother , the highlight of the renovations included a hydrotherapy spa in the backyard (to help ease liese’s arthritis), a new sand pit, and a giant rock pool for keeping pet fish. The Roaches now plan to hold a garage sale to sell their old furniture that’s been replaced, with money raised to go back into Kids Get Arthritis Too. Domestic Blitz is set to premiere on Channel Nine in mid-May.
Guest guest
Yep, I suggested they be the family who got the home makeover! They're the treasurers of our Kids get Arthritis too branch, and they are treasures! Went down to Sydney on the Tuesday to do an interview for the show, then back again on the Thursday to surprise them on their return. We tricked into thinking we were having a meeting, so she was making scones for us when the TV crew turned up. Then the TV people ate our scones! LOL At least we got them to buy some KGAT wristbands, and wore them on TV. ;-D It was incredibly tiring (we got back late for Grant to start work, at midnight!), but sooooo worth it. They were overwhelmed and liese loves the new spa. She said " Will it make my arthritis go away? " If only... We're hoping to go pay a visit in the upcoming school holidays, so Bay and Vi can try the spa too.
