Abel of Vancouver, who suffered with juvenile arthritis as an

adolescent, is heading to Beijing next month to join 70 other runners in a

marathon on the Great Wall of China in support of the Arthritis Society's

Joints in Motion fundraising program.

Abel, 24, was diagnosed with arthritis at age four and " lived through

restricted activity, routine trips to children's hospitals, splints,

crutches, pain and subjective opinions " until the condition went into

remission when he was 13.

" The settling of my arthritis lit a fire within to push myself in every

way, " Abel said in a news release.

It's believed that one in 250 children and youth battle arthritis on a daily

basis.
