Sternum Pain

Quoth Steve Weingarten NSCA-CPT....

>>A friend of mine fairly new to weight training was doing dips in the gym

when he felt a popping sensation in he sternum, followed by pain. Two days

later the area is quite sore, with added pain when he expands his ribcage or

lifts his arms overhead. I was wondering if anyone on this forum might have

any ideas what happened and what he should do about it.<<

I joined this particular club oh so many years ago while doing martial arts

training in the Army. We were doing two step sparring working on throws,

and my partner pulled me in on a hip throw rather than allowing me to

free-fall. Luckily when he accelerated the throw I was able to twist out of

the drop and land on my shoulders instead of on my neck (it was a beautiful

throw - he would have broken my neck quite easily if I hadn't been

attentive...). When I landed I felt and heard a loud pop in my chest.

Since then (11 years ago) I can pop my chest like you can pop your knuckles.

Most of the time it doesn't hurt, but occasionally when I yawn, stretch or

sneeze it will pop and hurt so bad it takes my breath away. I have a

co-worker who's chest does the same thing - his sternum was broken in a muay

thai match in Brazil.

I discuss the problem with every doctor I talk to and the most common answer

I have gotten is that I have simply loosened the connection between the

ribs and the sternum. Of course this is assuming that your friend hasn't

pulled a tendon or muscle. If his chest pops when he moves and feels the

pain he may now share my problem. If it was me I would rest for a few days,

take a few anti-inflammatories and see a doctor if it didn't improve in a

few days.

I agree with what your doctors are saying. I have in the past done dips,

behind the neck presses, and other exercises that cause my sternum to

pop. I believe that it is just the ribs subluxing. They are only

connected to the sternum by cartilage. I would recommend you see a well

trained chiropractor who can adjust them. Preferably someone who uses an

activator.

Hope it helps

I have dealt with this before but nothing is working. I have serious sternum pain. I have been sick this last week and coughing my head off and apparently its flared up my rib cage and sternum. I am absolutely miserable. Any home remedies? Help please!Love always; (JAS, 23)
