Guest guest
Hello all, Aundrea has had a swollen big toe for 3 weeks now. It is more swollen at night than in the morning and she hasn't been able to bear weight on it. She walks on the side of her foot. We have tried ice and heat. Sometimes it is to painful to stand the weight of a sheet on it. We met with her dr. yesterday who said that the symptoms all seem like gout. Of course, given that Aundrea rarely ever consumes alcohol (just kidding) never consumes alcohol and isnt a high protein eater nor is she an adult...she doesn't really fit the profile. Of couse she doesn't seem to fit the profile for anything. Anyway, the medication they would use would likely worsen her stomach issues that she has been having related to GERD, so we are going to hold off on treatment and see if she improves on her own. Her tmj and joint issues have been more prevalent so her medication was for fibromylagia was increased and we started her back on protonix for GERD. Hopefully, this will help everthing to settle back down. So, out of curiosity has anyone else had Gout. What type of treatment if anything help to lessen the pain. And did it reoccur? Guest guest
, That you for all the diet information. I am still uncertain about the diagnosis but I will hang onto this list just to be on the safe side. Her toe was never red and shiny like I saw in pictures of others that had gout. Aundreas toe wans't red or warm to touch. Just swollen and the pain radiated from her big toe into her in-step. She is continuing to have toe pain and joint issues elsewhere. Seems like 3 weeks might also be a long time for an intial gout attack. thanks again, (aundrea 12 fibroyalgia) > > > That sounds so painful. If it is gout, OUCH!! > Even if it isn't, OUCH! > BUT if it is, people with gout have to avoid certain foods. It is worth a try to eliminate these foods from her diet: > > Some of the common beverages, which gout patients should avoid, include coffee, tea, cocoa and even chocolate. Some of these beverages are already part and parcel of ones daily life that it is seriously a bit different to imagine having to abstain drinking them. If you think it is really no big deal to indulge in it once in awhile, you will really have to think twice. Is the pain from a possible gout attack really going to be worth it from your indulgence? > The second list of food gout patients should avoid includes gizzard, kidney, seafood, heart, gravy and red meats. Alcohol should also be place in the list of food to be avoided. Any form of alcohol including wine or beer can trigger attacks of gout. It is significant to memorize the list of food to avoid as it can help to reduce the amount of gout attacks controlling drugs one will have to take. > The third and somehow the list which most people consider as the most healthy choice is simply a bit hard to comprehend why it should be avoided by gout patients. Peas, spinach, lentils and beans are vegetables that should be avoided if one is diagnosed with gout. > It is seriously important for people with gout to bear in mind the types of food items that are harmful and beneficial to their gout conditions. Since you now have a better knowledge of the food types that should be consumed, it might be a good habit of what to buy and what not to buy when you do your grocery shopping the next time. > > ---- Original Message ----- > From: sonia1md <sonia1md@...> > Date: Friday, July 11, 2008 14:11 > Subject: update on Aundrea > > > > Hello all, > > > > Aundrea has had a swollen big toe for 3 weeks now. Guest guest
Hi maria, Acutally we saw the pediatrician that has a background in fibromyalgia. The rheumy has said that from now on she should manage aundrea's " issues " and he would consult as needed. Otherwise just see him once or twice a year. I don't think it's gout. She is now having pain in other toes and the symptoms seem to be lasting to long. Its really frustrating. Aundrea has a total lack of trust in doctors, especially since she believes she has endured 2 years of mtx giving her flu like symptoms every weekend for a disease that they now say she doesn't have. I guess I can't blame her for her reservations. I have read with interest about how Rob is transitioning from a ped rheumy to adult internist/rheumy. It must be so hard to let them go and hope that they make the right choices. He may end up not taking his meds properly or just testing the waters to see if he really needs them. I pray his medicated remission continues, but if problems resurface I know you will be right there to help him. Motherhood is always a challenge and a joy no matter how big are babies grow. :-) (Aundrea 12 fibromyalgia)- -- In , and Schulz <snooksmama@...> wrote: > > I'd have to agree with you. Guest guest
Hi I agree with you. I don't think it would go on this long if it were gout and I think she would have more discoloration and the pain would be present through out the entire day and not come and go as much as it has with aundrea. She does have pain where its to intense for the ice pack or bed sheet but there are other times that it's not so bad. Its worse after she exercises and it's not discolored. I think it's related to jra which of course now they say is fibro. We can't do the indomethacin due to her GERD. The alleve has already caused her GERD to flare up. Today she is having a fibro day. Sore muscles and no energy. I have found that when doctors can't prescribe what they normally due for treatment then you are just left in pain. Aundrea can either take NSAIDS and deal with nausea and stomach pain or she can not take them and deal with the continued joint pain. I guess it just feels like there aren't many choices some days and it gets pretty frustrating. Thanks for the info. sonia (aundrea 12 fibro)- -- In , " Tepper, Michele " <MTepper@...> wrote: > > HI, . Just jumping in - my hubby has gout. When he has a flare, the > toe is always hot and red. Guest guest
, It does not sound like gout at all! What are you planning to do next? I can't even begin to imagine how Aundrea feels. The doctors have not worked very hard for her and did nothing to instill any kind of trust. She just keeps getting knocked down, over and over. But, like you said, you and I will always be right there for them, no matter what, to help them pick up the pieces. I pray that Aundrea finds a place of peace and no pain very, very soon. and Rob 19 JAS > >> needs them. Guest guest
Maira, I don't know what to do. Aundrea has been in a very bad flare for the past couple of days. She is having all over muscle and joint pain. Her joint pain in her feet and jaw is quite severe. Her fatigue is horrible. She hasn't been out of her pajamas for 2 days and just feels exhausted. On top of that her GERD has been really bad and she was crying last night from it. I wonder if there is more of a connection to her stomach issues than what we have thought? I feel like noone ever looks at the whole picture with Aundrea. It's alwasy just a dr visit on that particular day, looking at that one particular concern. I don't know that anyone has ever tried to really research the entire scope of her symptoms and come up with a theory as to what is wrong with her. I still feel she has fibromayalgia but I definitely don't think it's her only problem. Maybe I should revisit the idea of Mayo clinic? Guest guest
Thanks e for you input. I am going to look into it further. I think if we had enough doctors look at aundrea and all of her symptoms they would be able to figure things out. It's such a rare thing for a doctor to sit down and really take a detailed history. I think they more or less just go with what the previous doctor thought or suggested and then move on to new drugs. Guest guest
That is what was so wonderful about Mayo for her. So many docs look at one symptom and just treat that. I'll give you another example--my husband has always had horribly itchy feet. I mean horrible to the point he is scratching them raw. He went to the doctor. They gave him creams. They didn't work. They sent him to the dermatologist--they tried other treatments that worked so so. Fast forward to several years later, multiple docs, tests etc. It turns out he has a liver disease and the bile salts that build up are excreted in the sweat and his feet are always in shoes and socks (he never goes without except to bed) and so they would itch. He has a complicated disease but finally there is a medicine to treat it and when his liver levels are under control the feet don't itch. So finally there was a solution for the feet but it has nothing to do with his feet or skin--it is an autoimmune disease. So, yeah, many times they are treating a symptom and not the disease it seems. I hope you find some answers to help her and soon. Â e > > , > > I highly recommend a trip to Mayo!
