Guest guest
Beth, I would say that she has been taking all the meds on a regular bases and now this starts Right? went through a Period of fainting. It was not her Elavil though. She took that along with her Asthma meds and JA meds. We found out it was Low Blood sugar. Did you check her BP when she fainted? What is so hard is would say Mom I am not feeling good and she would turn white as a sheet and down she would go. I would have the Dr check the A1C as well. Since this will tell you in the last 3 months how the Blood sugar has been. A A1C of 6 is normal above 6 is high and below 6 is low. Keep in mind that Meds do interact with other meds. Guest guest
I was wondering how old Hannah is - because sometimes girls faint around puberty stage for unexplained reasons Love xxxxxxxxxxx From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Beth Yohnk Sent: 05 December 2008 18:25 Families_Dealing_with_Asthma ; Subject: Med interaction? Hi everyone. I'm coming to my groups hoping someone can help. On Wednesday evening Hannah fainted. This has never happened before. She was only " out " for 2-3 seconds and did not hit her head (thank goodness). I had her to the ped yesterday just as a precaution. He feels it is not cardiac (thank goodness again), but perhaps her meds interacting and causing a sudden drop in blood pressure. Anyone have kids who have had this issue based on meds? He thinks either her tramadol and/or her amitriptylene may be the cause. She had taken tramadol that day (not something she takes often) but had not taken her amitriptlyene that day (she takes that at bedtime). He also is checking all her asthma meds to see if they could interact with anything. I am so hoping the amitriptylene is not the cause, since starting this med Hannah has been feeling so much better. Any ideas from my " experts " ? Sending prayers & happy thoughts, Beth
Guest guest
I had a young patient come in the other night that fainted from a urinary tract infection. Sometimes it can be vaso-vagal (nerve) stimulation, from bearing down, or no real reason. I don't know of those drugs causing passing out, but I guess it could be possible. Audra > > Hi everyone. Guest guest
Hi Audra, the ped did call it a vaso vagel episode, most likely from a drop in blood pressure not an infection. Guest guest
Hi Robbin: She just had all that checked by the endocrinologist we saw 2 months ago. Someone on my other group gave me a great website that I am going to check tomorrow. Apparently you can type in an entire med list and it will list any potential interactions. Guest guest
Beth, Our daughter 'joe' used to faint all of the time. She still does sometimes. Keeping hydrated always helps. Her ped looked up all her meds and so many of them interact and could cause fainting. He told her to keep hydrated. To rise slowly when seated. If she ever feels like she is going to faint--he told her to sit down and put her head between her legs any time she felt lightheaded ***actually he told her to bend over and kiss her bottom*** All the meds can interact---if the treatment is doing her good then I would continue it and hope that this was an isolated incident. e, mom to joe 21 poly/lupus From: Beth Yohnk <yohnkmom@...> Subject: Med interaction? Guest guest
Tramadol is Ultram, right? I was given that with my Cymbalta ( A SSNRI).... the primary care doctor said it was fine.... the pharmacist said it was fine.... guess what? It wasnt fine!!! I called the psychiatrist who said immediately Get OFF of the ultram NOW! It's not good with drugs like cymbalta that act on Seretonin in particular. This is a bit more known now than it was 6 months ago. Now Elavil... or amitryptiline is a trycyclic and I don't know it's mechanism with seretonin but most antidepressant medications work on this neurotransmitter one way or another combined with the fact that some of us are just so sensitive to certain meds... it wouldnt surprise me much at all if they were interacting. With cymbalta and Ultam, I got a lot of sweating, especialy at night.... it was... yukkk..... I have had another medication... Effexor XR cause my blood pressure to change before as well..... again, fortunately I had a shrink that figured that oput while my primary care doctor was freaking out that I had BP issues .... it was the med. Anyways, on Helavil as I call Elvail..... I was on only 25mg and about 6 months latter after being on it, I was having ofactory hallucinations and didn't want anyone near me.! MY pedi rheumy didn't believe me! But I had to come ff of the stuff. Eventually she had another patient with the problem who she claimed had it becuase they knew me... this 'imagined it " ..... rolls eyes.... than she eventually had someone else whod idnt know either me or the other girl who had the SAME problems.... so given that these meds arent studied in kids... they can cause unusaul uncommon problems... So all of that was to say... yes, it could very well be those two... especialy since ultram and anything that acts on a seretonin type medication can have isssues because tramadol works on seretonin too. Guest guest
Hi, Beth. If they think the Tramadol might cause problems, what about the extended release version? My hubby is on Ultram and had quite a few problems with the regular one, primarily headaches. The rheumy switched him to Ultram ER and he has had no headaches and is beginning to get good pain relief. Unless Hannah is on that already, maybe a change would help? As to the period thing, my oldest did not get hers until she was 14. I was worried but the ped said it was ok, and we would worry if she got to 15 without starting. Just some quick input on that issue. Guest guest
Hi Michele: I will have to ask about the Ultram ER vs Tramadol. Hannah has been fine and has performed twice since them with no issues, so I'm thinking it might be the Tramadol. I think we can get by without, she hardly every takes it anyway. Glad to hear you hubby is getting some relief! As far as the period goes, if Hannah is like me, she can look forward to that this summer Beth ________________________________ From: " Tepper, Michele " <MTepper@...> Sent: Monday, December 8, 2008 9:53:30 AM Subject: RE: Med interaction?
