Guest guest
Brook also gets his orthotics from Cascade DAFO's,but his physcial therapist casts his feet and mails the casts to Cascade in order for them to make his orthotics. His orthotics surround his feet and come up over his ankle. They cost around $500. The ones you can just order up are not the same kind of thing. You would have to decide what is appropriate for your child with the help of a professional, in our case, a pediatric physical therapist. Guest guest
Veri, wears Orthotics ( Inserts ). Her first ones were like a half cast and we had to put them inside her shoes and tie the shoe them strap the other end below the knee. Ok, Those were more trouble than it was worth. Her next ones were fitted and worked great. had to put each foot in a separate box where the mold was and presto the form was made. in 2 or 3 weeks she went back and was told how to use them. The PT told me to go buy a new pair of shoes which was light weight and she took the insides out and fitted the new one right in lolol. said they felt GREAT. AMAZING that these were made with a lift as well so with it all inside her shoe no one knew which leg was shorter. Nothing showing that. Insurance should pay for it though. Do you carry her to a Children's Hospital? If so a PT or Podiatrist could do this for you. 's ankles were turned out so the Orthotics was a saver on this as they moved her feet to a Normal position. When she wears her flip flops you can tell that she has a limp and the ankles turn out. But when she wears those sneakers she walks better. Oh by the way no matter which shoes you use all you do is take out the inside and replace with the inserts. Robbin **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Guest guest
Meagan gets her orthotics from a company in Washington state. They were around $60 for hers, but she was fitted for a size 10 child's shoe. They might be more for a bigger pair. Not sure. I can look up the info and post later if you need it. She was fitted by a PT that was recommended by the rheumy. They have helped her quite a bit, and even though she's only 4, it didn't take her anytime to decide that they helped and if she switches shoes, she changes the inserts on her own. I thought it would take some time for her to get used to them , so I only had her wear them for a half day for the first two days, but she was having no problems, so after that, she just kept them on all day. Guest guest
My daughter wears shoes inserts. She has a leg difference, so all she has to wear is a heel lift. Our Rheumy, recommended a podiatrist. He did some quick measurments and quickly recommended a shoe insert. We buy ours at www.footsmart.com and they run around 7-8 dollars each. The one she wears isn't a full shoe insert....it is less then 1/2 of her shoe and is mostly for her heel, to make up the difference. It has done wonders for my daughter and her back pain! I hope it works out for your daughter. Helen Shoe inserts Anyone here had to get shoe inserts for their kids? I think I remember reading a while back about someone but not sure who. We have to go and get Jaye fitted or sized or something to have inserts for her shoes. I guess I need to go to a foot doctor. Are these expensive? Does it take a while for someone to get used to them? Are they much different then the ones you can buy in the store? Guest guest
Bradley has to get fitted for Orthotics sometime this month. He has hyper mobility in his feet, which basically means that he has no arch and is starting to affect the way he stands. We have to see an Orthotist to cast his feet to get the right measurements and such. I don't know yet how much it will cost but I'm sure our insurance will cover at least part of it I hope! Your Rheumy should refer you to an Orthotist if they need some sort of Orthotic. Don't know too much yet but when we go see them, I will let you know what all they do. marie Mommy to Bradley (Pauci JRA, Uveitis and ANA+) Charlie and veristroud@... wrote: > > Anyone here had to get shoe inserts for their kids? Guest guest
Our doctor had her first try the over the counter inserts. We found them at Nordstrom's but I am sure they are available other places. They are called Happy Feet. You buy them for your shoe size and them pull out the original inserts in your shoe and replace them with these. They were some what helpful and she would just keep switching them to her other shoes. They have some for regular shoes and some for dress. After awhile she needed more aggressive ones. We went to the podiatrist and he made molds of her feet. It took a couple week for them to come back. She loves them. Our insurance company would play for one set every year I think and they covered the majority of them since it was a documented need. My daughter loves her inserts and they have made a difference. e, mom to 'joe' 22. poly/lupus From: veristroud@... <veristroud@...> Subject: Shoe inserts Date: Thursday, September 18, 2008, 6:24 PM Anyone here had to get shoe inserts for their kids? Guest guest
Oops, sorry--they are not Happy Feet, they are Super Feet! Guest guest
Thanks for all your advice and input about the shoe inserts. We have had store bought inserts in her shoes for several monhts now. But they are not enough. We can get her feet fit for them at Children's Mercy in KC at our next Rheumy appt if we want but I would prefer to get them before then. So I am going to look to see if there is somewhere in Wichita that I can go. A three hour drive to another appointment is just not really feesable at this point. And it is not as much the three hour drive but the day off from work. Wichita is just 30 miles so that will be a much better choice if I can find someone there to help us. I can take just a couple of hours off for a Wichita trip. Jaye's feet have no arch at all he said, they are as flat as they can get. If we can not get these in Wichita I will do it when we see the rheumy again in two months. Veri & Jaye 14 poly Re: Shoe inserts Bradley has to get fitted for Orthotics sometime this month. Guest guest
I had a podiatrist that made my orthotics first and than latter on in life, my orthopedist sent me to a orthosis place to have low AFOs- ankle foot orthotics made because i have hardly any arch but also because my feet roll too and i have limited to no dorsiflextion in my ankles ... they casted my feet/ankles with something that was like wet pink ace bandage... lol... it stiffened up....they cut them off.... when i came back some weeks or so latter they had the mold of them and they see how they go.... u have to buy good sneakers for them to go in.... ive often been told new balance is agreat brand... the orthotics never fit in anything else but sneakers. I had flat orthotics when i was younger that were clear transluscent red.... lol... they fit in my dress shoes too but they werent as sufficient as these ones. Ive seen softer orthotics made for JA purposes so they dontt aggrivate painful joints too. At camp, we used a lot of mole skin on the pressure spots! Anyways, I find AFO's very helpful but honestly I still hate them. They ar ehard and unattractive. I can't wear nice shoes with them and if i wear nice shoes without them, well than I ruin them and I hurt ... Whatever the case, they can and do help but like any extra device, etc... sometimes produce extra pain to deal with... just my 2 cents Issadora On Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 2:41 PM, <veristroud@...> wrote: > Thanks for all your advice and input about the shoe inserts.
