Guest guest
Hmmmmm very curious, but it still sounds like arthritis to me. With my joints they just get swollen and red not usually warm. Everyone is different though so I would call the rhuemy to play it safe, you just never know. Best wishes Shea On Mar 23, 2011, at 10:34 PM, " nn " <rosannwinn@...> wrote: > Hi all, > 's arthritis has been under great control since starting Kineret. We do have a 504 for her where she could have been with the group of kids who needed extra time, but we declined that accommodation because she's been doing really, really well and it didn't seem she needed it. (Each year we have the option of choosing which she needs). Anyway, it's only been one hour per day of writing, which doesn't seem more intense than an average day for her. However, this evening (after 2 days of testing) her hands are swollen and her knuckles are red. They don't feel warm. Her wrists hurt a bit too. It doesn't seem like a huge deal, but as usual, is disappointing. The Kineret seems to be holding the systemic symptoms, and I thought, the arthritis too. She's also been digging around in the sand a lot at recess. Or, maybe it's just our dry climate. Anybody have any thoughts? Even in high flare time (at onset, and before starting Kineret) her knuckles have never been red. So, here I am thinking - what the heck is THIS? > > nn (, 9, systemic) > >
Guest guest
I have never got hung up if the joint is red or hot. n's joints have never been red and hot. If they hurt, they hurt. It is arthritis. Don't panic yet. It might go away. n's can really travel around. Guest guest
I gave her hands a soak in an oatmeal bath and put Aquafor (sp?) on them. It's really dry here right now. But she's wiped out - soccer started yesterday, the testing at school, the first week back from spring break. At injection time I saw that *?darn* rash. And her wrists were definitely sore. This is the dicey time of trying to wean the methotrexate. We are down to .6ml (have been there for 4 weeks). Plan is to wean to .4ml this Friday, then labs in another 4 weeks. Questionable we'll be able to get her off the MTX, especially without an increase in the Kineret. I'm hoping she wakes up ready to go tomorrow If not I'll have to call the Rheumy to see if we decrease the MTX without labs or a Kineret increase. Crazy roller coaster ride this darn disease - but I'm doing a fairly good job of keeping my chin up tonight. So great to have this lifeline board to come to. THANKS. nn > > > Hi all, > > 's arthritis has been under great control since starting Kineret. She's off the pred, and we are weaning Methotrexate, but it's been 4 weeks since we last reduced. Guest guest
Why so anxious to wean off the mtx? She isn't in remission since she is having symptoms. All the biologicals are more effective with mtx, but I don't know if that has been proven with Kineret. Mtx has been around a long time so all side effects are known. Kineret is so new, and no one knows the long term effects of it. Might it not be better to stay on mtx rather than increasing Kineret? Just a few things to consider. It takes 4-6 months for mtx to get out of your system. Maybe symptoms are now showing up because she really needs the higher dose of mtx. Guest guest
Good questions. This is the Rheumy's plan. At the appointment in January we were told the goal is to get off Pred, MTX, and Mobic, and remain only on Kineret. She did this with another patient who's now been on Kineret for 10 years and it holds things well. Everytime they try to wean the Kineret things come back, so he need the Kineret but nothing else. I might be with you on the MTX, especially if we can keep it at a low dose. > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > 's arthritis has been under great control since starting Kineret. Guest guest
It sounds like her hands are not doing well. If they hurt or if she is having a hard time keeping up with the testing, I would get her moved to other group. It could only benefit her.
