Sharon,

I know that being on Mtx can make kids sensitive to sunlight. As a matter

of fact, now that Bradley is on it again, I make sure if he is going to be

outside he is wearing a hat and sunscreen! He is VERY fair with LOTS of

freckles so I don't want him ever to get burned! My guess is probably the

Mtx.

Happy Tuesday to you too!

It is probably the mtx.

On the anemia question: It is my understanding that you can throw all the iron

you want at the anemia, but it is part of the inflammation of the

disease-especially with systemic. If you get the disease under control, the

anemia usually resolves itself. I think the docs prescribe the iron, but it is

really like peeing in the wind. (n, 22, systemic)

is still very anemic, even with having been on some treatment since

December. I'm just wondering how common the anemia is and curious as to how long

it might take for that to start resolving itself - our rheum says that the

anemia is common with JRA.

Hi Sharon, Sensitivity to sunlight can be a side effect of the Mtx. Maybe it

was a combination of that and his fair skin. We do a lot of sunscreen since my

daughter is on Mtx, and we live in Colorado. She's never been burned, but her

cheeks can get pink pretty quickly if I haven't applied sunscreen.

As far as the anemia, the disease needs to get under control and the anemia will

resolve. My daughter's blood counts were terrible for a year - nothing would

touch the anemia because it was caused by the inflammation - " anemia of chronic

disease " . In our case, within 2 weeks on Kineret her hemoglobin and hematocrit

were normal. It was unbelievable, actually. I hope you find the correct

combination of meds to bring 's disease under control, and I hope he's

feeling better than he was a few weeks ago.

was anemic prior to getting the disease under control. He is extremely fair

(he was actually thought to be Albino due to his skin, eye, & hair all being so

fair...plus nystagmus is a sign of Albinism)...so he is always covered in baby

sunscreen...SPF 50. Being on the MTX just adds to it.

Don't beat yourself up...it's all so new and we all have a learning curve. Hang

in there.

Thanks for all the feedback and support, folks. :) I appreciate it.

Now I know going forward that we'll have to be ever so careful with him and the

sunlight. Makes me not look forward to a trip to Hershey Park we have coming up

- I think I'll stress about his exposure the entire time.

Now if the rest of the redness would fade I'd feel a lot better. I bet that the

mtx makes it longer for skin to heal up too, huh?

Thanks again, all!

My daughter Rose has become extremely sun sensitive too. I can not recall if it

happened after she was on prednisone or an immune suppressant called Imuran.

She is no longer on prednisone, so I suspect imuran, which is to treat both the

arthritis and a liver issue that she has. In her case, I keep having the doctor

check for Lupus, but it continues to come out negative. I just get 100

sunscreen in the summer and keep reapplying. In the case of your son, ask what

kind of sunscreen you should use on him since he is much younger than Rose (11).
