Guest guest
The sed rate is the least precise test. It has a large margin for error, meaning lots of things can make it fluctuate. What symptoms was your daughter having to make you think she may have psoratic arthritis? And it is possible that one autoimmune disease can stir up another one. Audra 14 poly 07 Peyton 13 poly 08 > > My daughter was diagnosed almost two weeks ago with type1 and while were being hospitalized, I asked them to run tests for psoriatic arthritis.... they ran two or three tests, and the rheumatic was negative, but the sed rate one was a little high.. the doc making rounds at that time said it could be due to the diabetes on coming. Wondering if that was true, and should I see get another test run, or if what he was telling me is bunk.... I don't know what they would do for her, but I surely don't want it would get worse. > > Any help would be appreciated...... thank you! > > >
Guest guest
Audra, She is 8 now, and has had psoriasis since she was three,a year later she started developing nail psoriasis.... right now it has effected all of her finger nails and seven of her toe nails. She has been complaining of joint pain in the same areas for two years and achillies heal pain. She has also been complaining of pain in areas where the tendons meet. I didn't know that they could have pain there until I read it on a post while googling. While her psoriasis is under control with topicals..... the only thing she has gotten is naprosyn for the pain. She has stiffness in the morning with her right knee. She has limped going to school and coming home after school. She has had pain in her fingers and the ring finger on her right hand has gotten red, hot and painful but never swollen. Naprosyn took care of the pain, but the heat and redness never went away until the next day. She also has hypothyroidism..... after the diagnosis of diabetes two weeks ago, I just can't see this not happening. She has p on her whole scalp, ears, eyes, left knee, inverse, guttate on her back, although it's not bad on her back but they itche her like crazy (not that the rest doesn't but she just makes me scratch her back all the time). I don't want to be right, I just want to be ready. > > > > My daughter was diagnosed almost two weeks ago with type1 and while were being hospitalized, I asked them to run tests for psoriatic arthritis.... they ran two or three tests, and the rheumatic was negative, but the sed rate one was a little high.. the doc making rounds at that time said it could be due to the diabetes on coming. Guest guest
I would get her to a good pediatric rheumatologist quickly. She needs more extensive blood work dont. You are very correct in your judgement. It is just that the diabetic doctor or whoever saw her in the hospital was probably more worried about her diabetes than arthritis. Type 1 is so... life changing. I am not sure, but the hypothyroid along with all of the other things concerns me. I have heard of many kids having autoimmune problems with their thyroid as well. Like Hashimoto's thyroiditis? I know very little about it, but it just sets off immunological " alarms. " So sorry that your baby is giong through all of this. DM is hard enough to deal with. Highs, lows, learning a new way of life, learning carb counts at 8yo! To deal with the arthritis on top of it would be hard to manage. My Bff's son was diagnosed with DM at age 5. She is the diabetic camp nurse. She said that her biggest concern was Celiac, because many diabetic kids developed Celiac (which is also autoimmune.) She has never mentioned DM with arthritis. At our arthritis camp we have several kids with Celiac as well. As far as I know, there were no diabetics at our camp. Weird. Well, sorry to be a bummer, but you are on the right track. Hopefully, you'll find an answer soon. Guest guest
Thank you Audra..... I too was concerned with the celiac too, so I tried getting her to go gf while she was at home. That kinda went out the window..... she wasn't happy with the " look " of the breads... among other things. She had a blood test for it when she was 6, it came out negative but from what I had been reading, only the biopsy could really be the definitive test. I thank all of you who gave me your opinion and anyone else who wants to comment I would appreciate. I am sure this won't be the last of me. I would like to keep contact to ensure things are going in the right direction. maria > > > > > > Audra, > > > > She is 8 now, and has had psoriasis since she was three,a year later she started developing nail psoriasis.... right now it has effected all of her finger nails and seven of her toe nails. Guest guest
Micele, What are they doing for his condition? Does he have any swelling? The one ped rheumy we saw did diagnose her with JIA, but just so she could justify the naprosyn and until she saw more symtpoms..... did you have a hard time with getting diagnosed? > > > > > > My daughter was diagnosed almost two weeks ago with type1 and while were being hospitalized, I asked them to run tests for psoriatic arthritis.... they ran two or three tests, and the rheumatic was negative, but the sed rate one was a little high.. the doc making rounds at that time said it could be due to the diabetes on coming. Guest guest
Michele, Had they ever mentioned to you that there may not be any swelling? And have they ever done MRI's to check for inflammation that can't be seen by x-rays? The not seeing the swelling was the main reason why the one ped she saw wouldn't diagnose her with anything else but JIA... but even a phone conversation she said she just doesn't think that she has any kind of arthritis.... Guest guest
, Don't go just yet! We may both be in the same situation! This is all so interesting that your daughter symptoms won't get taken seriously, just as my daughters symptoms don't seem to be taken seriously. We may have to lean on each other so don't go! > > Thanks. Its just been so hard and im to the end of the rope. All I can do is just cry. I hate all that she goes through. We are going 2 hours away tomorrow to meet with a GI and I pray for some kind of plan of action. > > RE: Re: Question... anyone's child have T1 diabetes..... and jra/jia? > > I realized after i typed it that this wasnt for me!! Sorry. I probably dont even need to be here. There are never answers for my daughter. She has tummy issues to and a gtube with no real diagnosis there either. It sucks. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Tepper, Michele <MTepper@...<mailto:MTepper%40ftportfolios.com>> > Sent: Thursday, April 07, 2011 3:48 PM > <mailto: %40> < > > [The entire original message is not included] > >
Guest guest
Just adding a comment. My son hardly swells at all, but his joints get warm and " puffy " . I think they are all different. Guest guest
Thank you Michele.... YES! Hearing someone elses story does help. That is the kind of thing that I am looking to hear. The things that are generally posted on the internet are okay.... but I think if most people followed those half of the symptoms may not show and we would just pass off what we see as not being related. She did see a ped rheumy at Pittsburgh Childrens and I have to say that I didn't appreciate the fact that she wouldn't do blood work because she didn't want to subject her to more pokes from a needle just because she had her thyroid levels checked a week earlier. She did put her hands on her, but it seemed so basic I don't know how she got anything from it. The second time we went up it was for her to look at her toes... and still she never thought to do blood work. This was two years ago. When I called a couple of months ago, she said she just doesn't see it in her. I can't help but think that all this waiting may be making things worse......
