Never done the Humira but have heard it is painful.Enbrel,at least the kind you

mix yourself doesn't hurt at all especially if used with Emla Cream.Humira is

stronger, about like Remicade so you need to decide if down sizing is something

that you want to do.

Subject: Humera burn vs. Embrel

I was wondering if anyone has been on both of these drugs? Amber is having a

terrible time dealing with the burning of the Humera. She is a really tough kid

after so many years of JRA but is hysterical when she thinks of starting her

Humera. The Humera is a miracle drug for her but she says it's like putting a

burning coal on her leg. The Rheummy explained to her that it is the medicine

working and she hadn't really heard these kind of complaints at all. The last

time she was to get her shot she was crying and every time I would try to put

the pen near her pushing it away. I was terrified she would break the needle.

The Dr said she could try the Embrel but if she didn't like the burning it would

be every week instead of every two weeks.

I was wondering if Embrel burns as bad as Humera?

Humira burns bad. You could ask for a script for Emla cream to numb the site for

her. Ice can help,too.

Enbrel does not burn, but be sure to get the one you have to mix yourself. The

premixed enbrel is a lower Ph and does burn. The one you have to mix yourself

comes in the twice a week injection type. But you can mix both injections and

put it in a bigger needle to give only once a week- if you follow all of that.

Kaylee has done Enbrel and Humira both. She did Enbrel for 2 years or more and

she had to have it

twice a week. She never complained about it burning. She has been on Humira for

over a year and she

hates it! She is so stressed out every time she has to get it. She was getting

it every 4 weeks, but due

to a bad flare, she is having to do it every week along with her MTX as well. It

is so traumatizing and

I hate doing it. She cries and screams and begs not to do it. Then she spends at

least 15 minutes after,

crying and screaming about it hurting and will not let me touch her. The Humira

has been good for her

until they started weening her off. I am considering remicade because the Humira

is so traumatizing and

the rheumy gave us that option, but didn't take it last week, but have contacted

her to let her know I am

considering it big time.

Thank you for the information! It is just so hard deciding what to do. It just

works so well for her. I don’t know if we can just try a Embrel for a bit to

see if it works or if we should stay on something we know works. We have tried

icing, warming the shot and the cream but it is not just the injection site she

says hurts it is the medicine even after it’s injected her whole thigh will

burn it the injection is there. I hate seeing her go though so much pain. These

kids have so much to deal with I hate to put the decision on her back. She is

only one year away from graduating and would love to be in remission so she can

have some choices in College. She has missed out on so much in middle and high

school without a diagnosis. If she tries the Embrel is there a wait time before

she can go back on Humera if it doesn’t work? Any thoughts would be greatly

appreciated as I am just lost.

Thanks,

, Amber (17)

Our daughter has done both. Started with the Enbrel, then  Remicaid, now

Humira. The Enbrel was easier on her than the Humira but she didn't do well on

it and had to take it 3 times a week. This is once every 2 weeks. She doesn't

like it but it makes her feel better than the others and the Remicaid pushed her

over the edge with anxiety. She does the humira in her belly, says it is easier

and less painful.  You might try that. And bribery always helps--even when they

are 20 something ;-)

My son has been on both Enbrel and Humira. Enbrel didn't bother him, but just

like your daughter, he HATED Humira. He said it burned really badly and finally

got to the point where he would throw up from anxiety when he saw the shot. The

only thing that helped was getting a prescription for Lidocaine. We were able to

draw it into the needle with the Humira. The Lidocaine would go in first and

then I would slowly inject the Humira. It didn't remove all of the pain, but it

definitely made it bearable!

Can't believe your Dr. said they'd never heard of Humira burning! Crazy! It

burns like acid being injected. You can try Emla cream and ice first. It will

help, but it is the medicine going into the body that is the worst, and it can't

be touched by topicals. Some kids have been able to mix Humira with Lidocane in

an insulin needle and had success with that. Kat takes too much in her

injections to try that. Her Dr. said she will never have to take a more painful

shot - none exist! Kat was taking 2 injections of Enbrel per week and now takes

1 Humira every other week and would still much prefer to go back to Enbrel, even

though it had stopped working. Humira is starting to work for her though, and

she is starting to see the benifit. Humira is still awful for her, but at least

she's starting to see that it is worth it. Good luck!!!

How is your daughter doing now? Is she still on Enbrel? My daughter is 19 & is

in college too. She started Enbrel a year ago. It helps by controlling her RA

but she tends to pick up on every virus around her. She was recently diagnosed

with pertussis, aka whooping cough, even having the vaccine in August. She was

sick from it from early November through March but was misdiagnosed with

bronchitis until March. She was advised by her rheumy to temporarily stop

taking the Enbrel until she becomes well but staying well seems to be an uphill

battle that she stopped taking the Enbrel even after feeling better as she

feels the Enbrel is causing her to constantly get sick with some type of virus

or infection. Now, unfortunately, her knee has swelled up considerably that

she knows the inevitable, the RA will get worst if she doesn't resume her

medication. Did your daughter have similar problems and did she overcome them &

how?

Hi Kirsten,

My daughter recently switched to Humira as Enbrel stopped working for her also.

About how long did it take before started feeling the benefits of the

Humira? had a headache for a week after her first dose and we were

worried she would have to stop Humira - she got a severe headache again but it

started to subside by the second day so she thinks her body is adjusting. She is

going to be gone all summer and we are hoping for results in the next month.

Hi,

I am not Kirsten, but we switched to Humira from Enbrel over a year ago. My son

felt the effects within one or 2 days. It was almost immediate. He is still on

it and doing much better overall.

Hi ! It took 2+ months to start noticing a difference with the

Humira. We were actually meeting with the rhuemy to discuss switching to

Remicade when she finally started to show improvement. The apt was on Monday,

her 5th injection was the Friday just before. It was the best weekend she'd had

in 1/2 year! too had horrible headaches daily. She is still getting

them but they are much weaker and no longer daily. The Humira has been working

now for a couple of months and although she still isn't as good as new, she's

doing almost as well as when the Enbrel was working for her. I really hope your

daughter's response is quicker! It was agony giving her these painful

injections with no results. Hope you can send her off for the summer feeling

good and hopeful!

Hi,

n is 22 and will graduate next month. She has had systemic jra for twelve

years. She has been on many different things thru the years, but is currently

on mtx. n does get sick often. I have always said that the 24 hour flu

lasts more like a week with n. To be quite honest, I don't know how

consistent n is in taking her meds. I have had to learn to let go, which

is hard to do. I have tried to explain the ramifications to her of not taking

her meds, but even though she will soon be a Civil Engineer, she tends to be a

little dense on common sense.

As you know, vaccines might not be effective in our children. i.e. the DPT

vaccine.

Is your daughter close to home? n is 700 miles away which can get tough at

times. We do have an emergency doc for her down in California. She has had

several ER visits the last four years, but knock on wood this year has been

good.

Is your daughter registered thru the disability department at her school?

n has been the last four years. It has allowed us to be proactive rather

than reactive with her disease. n does get sick often and the profs can't

flunk her on the spot with her disability status.

Could your daughter get a joint injection in her knee? Does she have consistent

pain in her knee?

Does your daughter see a ped rheumy or an adult rheuemy?
