Ok, who all has been through this? We have Jaye schedueled to have her

extracted in three weeks. Unfortunatly, she is going to miss the last day of

school for this. Her dentist/orthodontist suggested that he could do it in his

office with giving her laughing gas. Me being the over cautions mom suggested

that she go where she could be put out for the procedure sicne I worry about her

havign to hold her mouth open for two hours. So he referred us to an oral

surgeon. We met with the oral surgeon on April 22nd and he not only said she

should not have it done in the dentist office but he will not do it in his

office. He wants her to be in the outpatient surgical center. Because of her

arthritis he agrees that she needs to be under general anesthesia, but because

of the combination of her seizure disorder and her allergies he feels more

confident having her in the surgical center where they have a better ability to

take care of her if she would have a seizure. She is not able to take Valium

and he said that would be his first line of defense if she were to have a

seizure. Now, her seizures are under control and she has not had a spell in

quite some time. The neurologist is even talking about weining her off of her

meds. But caution is my game and I feel very good that this oral surgeon also

does. This surgeon only does the extractions at the surgical center on

Wednesdays. I had assumed this would be covered under her dental insurance, but

the insurance gal said not, this is a medical procedure and they rarely file

dental claims. Well, our insurance year is June 1 through May 31. We have met

the deductable for this year and have about $300 left as out of pocket at the

80/20 for this year. So as I look at this procedure I know that I can have a

maximum expense of about $300 if we do this in May or a minimum out of pocket if

we wait til June 1st or later. We opted for the May date. Today, I plan to put

together a letter to let her teachers and the school know that she will miss the

last day of school and that they need to provide for her the ability to take her

finals early. They probably will not all be very happy with me but that is not

my worry, they can deal with me on nice terms or they can deal with the mother

bear that they will not like very well. Previously she has had some teachers

meet the mother bear in me but I have not had to do that for a while or very

often. What if any complications did any of you have with this procedure.

Jaye has not had any procedure where she was put under a general

anesthetic except just before age two for tubes in her ears. I know about the

possiblility of dry socket and the normal things that go with this but I do

wonder about the arthritis having problems with her jaw afterward.

Hi, Veri-

n had this done, and we went to an oral surgeon. Our insurance did not pay

a dime for it. It was all out of pocket for us so make sure you can get it

covered. She had all four taken out and they were impacted. She was put under

without any trouble. n has been put under more than a dozen times

throughout her jra life, and things have always gone smoothly.

n's cousin had her wisdom teeth out around the same time, and she was in

bed for about a day. n was down for close to a week, but everything seems

more serious with n. Ice will be your favorite word. We iced it a ton the

first day. I went out and bought a lot of the blue ice packs. It was like 15

minutes on and fifteen minutes off as I recall. Yes, n's jaw was sore, but

she does have tmj arthritis. Even going to the dentist hurts n's jaw.

Stay up with the pain meds with her at least at first. Then you could ease off

to see if she really needed the pain meds. I gave them around the clock on the

first day and then I let n call the shots the following days. Good luck.

had his done when he was 18. Actually all three of my kids did at about

that age. The actual procedure does not take too long - maybe half an hour or

so. They had all four taken out. did not have any arthritis related issues

during surgery or for recovery. They all recovered much faster than I did when I

had two taken out last year. The oral surgeon said it was because they were

younger. Ah, youth! :)

Lucky for us, our insurance covered the whole thing, except for $50. The oral

surgeon's office could not believe it (even though we went to the same place

each time, although about three years apart) and made us give them $300 - $800

in advance. Needless to say, I called and called each time until I received my

money back. You do need to check the statements you get from the insurance

against what the dr's office charges you. For mine last year, the office kept

saying that I should not receive the amount I knew I should. I called the

insurance company and told them what the office was trying to do. The rep said

the office could lose its contract because they were basically overcharging

people. Needless to say, one call from the insurance company and I got all my

money back less the $50. Hope your insurance can cover at least some of this

for you. Michele ( 23, spondy)

I think you are doing the right thing by having it early and putting her under!

Our Rheumy said if we need dental work they would increase his predinsone for

a couple days.
