Guest guest
Anyone have experience with Rhuematic Fever & treatment? 's Ped today was asking if she had been diagnosed with Rhuematic Fever back when she first showed arthritis symptoms. (her old Ped moved recently) Rhuematic Fever is something I've always questioned. She had most of the symptoms, except thankfully no heart ones that we know of. Ped wants to consult with Kat's Rhuemy to discuss the merit of treating her with monthly antibiotic injections for the next 2 years. I haven't found too much info with a quick Google, thought I'd go to the pros! Interesting idea, especially if it would help! Thanks for any info you guys can share, Kirsten, mom to 7, spondy
Guest guest
Hi Kirsten, This is interesting. When was hospitalized at onset she was tested for every virus they could test for - including Rhuematic Fever. The test was negative, so that was something that was ruled out. My dad had Rheumatic Fever when he was a child and one of his heart valves was damaged, so I was very much concerned that had Rheumatic Fever, because she was having extreme heart pain. In her case it turned out to be pericarditis, going along with the systemic JI onset. So, that said, isn't there a test that can be given now? Isn't Rheumatic Fever an extension of strep? Was on lots of antibiotics back when she showed signs of arthritis? If so, does the Ped think maybe the infection cleared, but not entirely, thus the suggestion of long term antibiotics? Hope you get some answers, and don't quote me on this since I'm just thinking aloud and remembering some of what we went through ... nn (, 10, systemic) > > Anyone have experience with Rhuematic Fever & treatment? Guest guest
Yes, rheumatic fever is an extension of strep. When my older daughter had scarlet fever repeatedly (also an extension of strep) the ped was worried about her developing rheumatic fever and so always treated the strep/scarlet fever quickly. Luckily it never went that far. I could see how if had strep like symptoms (the body aches, the scarlet fever rash) that would be like arthritis - especially reactive arthritis. Some children's arthritis is triggered by an illness such as strep. Michele ( 24, spondy) From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of nn Sent: Tuesday, May 17, 2011 3:32 PM Subject: Re: Rhuematic Fever? Guest guest
Kat's arthitis onset was proceeded by strep & scarlet fever. Her fever lasted for days even though she was put on antibiotics immediately. When the fever finally broke the arthritis hit her everywhere. Then the scarlet fever rash left and a whole procession of other rashes came and went. They ran all the tests and monitored her over the next few months, hoping the arthritis would go away. After 3 months we were sent to the Ped Rheumy who diagnosed her with Spondy. That was 4 years ago. No one ever said Rheumatic Fever until her check-up on Monday. She has strep again and was flaring. My understanding is once you get Rheumatic Fever you can be more suseptible to it. He's thinking that it might be a good idea to blast her full of antibiotics to kill any lingering Strep germs and prevent it from re-occuring in the future. I'm waiting to hear what he and the rheumy decide on this. Not sure what I think! Thanks for the feedback! Kirsten, mom to , 7, spondy > > > > Anyone have experience with Rhuematic Fever & treatment?
