Mood change/signs of depression--side effects of Enbril, Methotrexate, or Mobic?

My 4.5 yr old was diagnosed with JA the end of Feb. and started taking Enbril,

Methotrexate, and Mobic. About that time (I can't recall exactly) she started

telling us, " I don't like myself. " The only further explanation I can get is, " I

don't like my body. " This is obviously troubling, and I'm trying to get to the

root cause. We raise her with Christian teachings that God made her perfect, and

He and we love her exactly how she is. I realized this could perhaps be a " mood

change, " a listed possible side effect of her meds, or it could be totally

unrelated. Has anyone else seen this in his/her child? I don't know if this is a

common side effect and/or how to combat. Thanks!

She is only 4.5 and perhaps does not have the vocabulary yet to say that she

does not like or understand her body hurting, taking meds, or that she is more

tired than her friends. She may be telling you in the easiest way for her that

she is unhappy with all the drs visits, testing, etc that goes along with this

disease. Many of our kids have gone for counseling, even for a short period,

just to learn to adjust. At her age, I don't know if you want to go that route,

you could always discuss this with your pediatrician if you feel that would

help.

You could explain to her, in simple terms she would understand, that sometimes

our bodies don't work the way we would like, and that the medicine should help

her to feel better. That everyone is made differently and sometimes we just need

help to get rid of the pain. Assure her you are doing everything you think is

right to get her to a place where she won't hurt anymore. You don't say where

her JA is affecting her most, but if, for example, she can't run with her

friends, explain that is what the medicine and drs visits should help with.

Personally, I think letting her know that you are trying to get her to a place

where she feels better lets her know you are in charge and she doesn't have to

deal with all of this on her own. It is very confusing, I think, to a child when

their body is hurting and they don't know why. Help her to realize that you view

this a temporary hurdle to get over, whether it may be or not. Yes, she may have

to deal with it for the rest of her life, but that is a long time to contemplate

when you are four. I would not say that you are going to make the pain go away

forever, as that is not something you know for a fact. Rather let her know that

you and the drs are working very hard to help. Educate her about the disease in

simple terms that she can understand. Hope these ideas can help you, Michele
