Guest guest
Neecy, My daughter is on Enbrel, Methotrexate, and several other arthritis and other meds. The only effect she has from the Enbrel is that the injection is painful. I am sure others will chime in with input and what side effects may be there for Enbrel but we have none and are loving the Enbrel. She has only been on Enbrel for about six months I think now and it has helped her so much. Dont be surprised if your rheumy leaves your son on the mtx with the Enbrel. They seem to compliment each other in many kids. How long have you been on the mtx? Hopefully in six months it will work well enough that you will not need the stronger meds but if you do it is good they are there. It is important to be aware of the side effects but also very important to be aware of the good that can come from using these as well. We often had swelling with no pain. But we knew that the arthritis was active and trying to damage the joints while it was there. I pray that all will go well and that your son will soon be pain free and have no swelling. He's currently on weekly methotrexate injections and takes naproxen - which he tolerates well and does not seem to be experiencing any pain. The swelling is still there though. He has polyarticular and psoriac arthritis. The side effects look scary - but just wondered whether any of the kids in our group have experience of taking Enbrel and how they found it. Thanks for any feedback. Love this group and find it invaluable. Neecy
Guest guest
I just want to chime in for a moment on Enbrel. My daughter has been on Enbrel for about 3 years now and loves it. She has experienced no unwanted side effects. About the painful injections, Veri, is your daughter using the prefilled syringes? We prefer the injection kits. It is the same dose as the prefilled syringes except that you mix it yourself. It is very easy to do. For a short time we used the prefilled syringes and found it very painful. We later found out it is the preservative in those syringes that burn upon injection. If you want to continue with Enbrel and have no pain upon injection, ask your doctor if you can switch to the injection kits. We all know how scary it is to investigate all the scary side effects of these drugs. No one here would dream of giving these drugs to a healthy child. But for our children with rheumatic disease, these drugs are effective and allow most of them to live and function normally. Guest guest
Lori, We have tried two different ones. The prefilled syringe and the pen, both are very painful but the prefilled syringe is worse even then the pen. I will ask the pharmacist to check for the injection kit for our next round. When we first started this they were not sure if they could get the kind that we would have to mix. It sure would make things easier. Jaye hardly ever complains. Of course the time I gave her a bruise she showed it to me for several days and then when it was there still a week later I felt horrible. At first we did not realize that we could let it sit out of the fridge for thirty minutes ahead of time, now we do that. I think I will try a different pharmacist then I did before, I honestly had forgotten about the pre mixed comments on this list until now. Being a single mom, working two and three jobs at a time and having three surgical proceedures in the last five months has kept my brain on over drive and not thinking straight. Some of us moms are just a bit scatter brained at times, and need the gentle reminders. Thanks. Guest guest
Our daughter has been on Enbrel for a year now and hasn't had any problems with it. She likes it way better than her Methotrexate shot which she has been doing for almost 3 years. Unfortunately she still has swelling in her hands that has never been controlled. We are still hoping to not see that swelling anymore. We just moved to a new state so it will be interesting what the new rheumy does. The side effects of all these drugs freaks me out and I try not to let my mind get carried away with all the what ifs....but we are hoping to get 's JRA into remission and are fighting it in any way we can. Best of luck to you! Jen, mom to , 10, poly Enbrel - side affects Our rheumy has proposed that our 6 year old son goes on Enbrel in 6 months. Guest guest
Yes, I highly recommend the injection kit. My son would scream with the prefilled syringes and pen. He does great with the injection kit and even gives the shots to himself. He hates methotrexate and refuses to give that one to himself, but 1 out of 2 isn't bad for a 12 year old Good luck. Guest guest
Ok, I called the pharmacy and they can only get the kits in 25mg. Do you give two injections or what? 's are 50 mg. Of course we have to get a new script from the rheumy if we want to change to this but we are seeing him in a week and a half so that is not a problem. Guest guest
Two choices. Give two shorts and give the same day. Or you can put all the liquid in one syringe and give one shot. Many people do that. ( n systemic) Sent from my iPhone On Apr 14, 2011, at 6:31 AM, veristroud@... wrote: > > Ok, I called the pharmacy and they can only get the kits in 25mg. Guest guest
was on it for over eight years and the only side effect he had was the injection site reaction that went away after a month or two. It put him in remission and he is now med free. Guest guest
Both of my children took Enbrel. One kid went into remission on Enbrel, and the other had to change to Humira because Enbrel quit working after about 6 months. Absolutely no side effects and it totally helped the disease. The difference in your child is amazing. They feel so much better. My son describes it as an energy shot. I think you'll be happy with the results. Guest guest
My started on Enbrel in July 2009...right around his 6th birthday...along with the mtx he had started in May 2009. He has had no side effects other than he says it stings (and we use the one you mix because he is so thin he takes less than 25mg injections.). We have tried a few different things to make it sting less but nothing seems to help. It's not horrible...and he understands that this shot makes him feel SO much better...so we get through it every Sunday night. Enbrel has been his 'miracle' drug...his response was almost immediate following his first injection. He has had no signs of active disease since November 2009 and we are currently weaning him from the mtx...VERY slowly. I credit Enbrel with giving him his childhood back. & , 7.5, poly...nystagmus...SPD... Sent from my iPhone
