He is a kind and compassionate man. I, too, was impressed with the time that he gave me to discuss our difficult situation. I highly recommend his book to pass around the family as a way of educating at a understandable level! He is right about being more assertive when finding help. An expression I like to use is: Be an Educated Consumer. This means that you need to research, ask questions, to be prepared and knowledgeable about ocd and its treatment. This gives you the power to recognize the correct or incorrect answer. Find out about free services and what is available through insurance. Look for studies being done that you can get involved in, etc. I once left a message saying: " I'm looking for a cbt who knows how to conduct erp for ocd. If you understand this message, call me back! " Pharmacists are also recourses for ocd meds, so if you need a consult when the doc's office is closed, try the pharmacy! >>>>1)How do you help someone who doesn't want help? Denial is a big part of our ocd'ers. Sometimes challenging the thought or action can help. For example: He says he wants to bang 3 times and you challenge him to not bang! he says he can bang if he wants to - ask him to prove that his thoughts arent making him do it! The expressions we use to talk back to the ocd thoughts are: Boss it Back; Its not me its my OCD; Who's in charge - you or ocd? Any expression that helps to externalize the ocd thoughts from the person. Many children name their ocd to keep it separate from themselves. >>>>2)Have any of you gone to UCLA for help? What do you think? THe UCLA program is very good and VERY expensive. Before you commit to it, look into a university psych. dept. or hospitals that are closer. There is an Alphabet Soup Centre in LA (sorry, I dont know the number) but can be contacted through Obsessive-Compulsive and Spectrum Disorder Association http://www.ocsda.org/ I think. Guest guest
Hi Clare: It sounds as if your sone could be living in my house some of the time! My son is 7, but he often will exhibit similar behaviour as your Gragory! Things are tempered a bit for him with Prozac. He also has pretty severe AD/HD and meds have only done a little for him until we recerntly switched him to Concerta(12 hr. methylfenidate). He behaves better and is not as nasty when this med is working. My son ha had a few tics, but not enough to warrant taking him off stimulants. I have read extensively on medication issues and it is my understanding that stimulants are not to be used in Tourettes patients..the OC Foundation has a great information on its web site concerning meds. (www.ocfoundation.org). they also have information on PANDAS which is a strep induced form of OCD, symptoms are a bit different than the traditional OCDbut can include tics and mood lability. It might be worth your while to look into these things if you haven't already done so. Guest guest
, You've made a great decision to start the BFL program. Isn't it great to have the extra energy?! Here are a few suggestions for some of your meals: Myoplex Ready to Drink Shakes Myoplex Meal replacement bars Can of tuna and some fruit or yogurt Cottage cheese and fruit I eat 3 of my meals at work, and take a variety of the above to work with me in an insulated lunch bag to use as 2 of my meals there. Good luck on the BFL program and in school. Keep us posted with your goals and your progress. Guest guest
, Buy a hand blender from Wal-mart. It's around $10 and a cinch to clean up. You can do it in the sink in your room. Also, buy some bars to eat between classes. You MUST eat every 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The bars will help you during the day. Good luck! Sara Well, i started the program about a week ago, and I feel great, especially after exercise! However, one problem I have is that I don't have time to eat 6 meals a day . . . I'm in college right now, and blenders aren't allowed in the dorms, so I can't make those Myoplex shakes. Any suggestions on what I should do? Is there a dorm " kitchen " where you would be allowed to take a blender? You'd need to clean it up there anyway so that might work. That's how things were in my dorm at UF years ago. We could cook/use appliances in the kitchen area but not in our rooms.
Guest guest
, Welcome! Lets imagine you have a condition that requires you to eat six meals a day or you will die. Think hard. How can I make it happen? It may not appear that way now, but good health is your long term number 1 priority and now is the time to address it and keep yourself in peak shape, otherwise you will die earlier than you could have lived and possibly avoid many debilitating conditions along the way. We can give suggestions but only you can make it happen. Carbs are easily transportable, so it comes down to protein. If you have refrigeration available it's easy. If not, turbo shaker bottles can be bought for protein powder and water. You'll need to select a mixable protein powder or you'll get clumps. But hey I've even seen a guy at my gym pour a scoop directly into his mouth and wash it down with water. May be a bit difficult but he's making it work. I use meal replacement bars. You can get them in many forms. EAS has a low carb bar that you can combine with a piece of fruit. I believe it's World Wide that has Pure Protein bars and Labrada has a Lean Body Bar that's about 31-33 g. of protein and 15 of carbs. Just tried their Blueberry Cheesecake flavor this morning and it rocks! Then of course there is Myoplex Lite and Myoplex Deluxe bars. Met-Rx has a group of bars as well that has decent stats. They are definitely cheaper over the internet unless you hit a mega sale somewhere. Typically 40% off the single bar price is available by the box. All the Best! Guest guest
Hi ! Welcome to BFL and to the group! I really like Kit's perspective on if you *had* to eat 6 meals per day because of a life-threatening condition, you would find a way to do it. I have a few suggestions of my own that help me to get in all six meals. Try to find the individual serving cans of tuna, they come in 3 oz. sizes and have a pop-top. They only have about 20 g protein so it may be a little lower than you need for each meal, but they don't need refrigeration and they are super convenient. On the protein bar issue, I like to order from www.netrition.com because they offer single bars for sale. A little more expensive than buying the box, but at least you can find out which ones you like, which is a lot less expensive than buying a whole box and finding out you can't choke them down! I like the EAS Simply Protein bars, Labrada Lean Body bars, and Designer Protein Better Body bars. Also, straight protein powder mixes pretty easily in a plain shaker bottle. The best ones I have tried for mixability are EAS Precision Protein and Next Nutrition Designer Protein. Just add cold milk or juice to get your carb portion. Jen B. Guest guest
Dear , Hey, you're in Binghampton -- I'm in Albany! Not too far away from each other. :-) Well, I always seem to have trouble getting my soaps out of their molds. I usually stick them into the freezer for a while, and then they usually pop right out. Have you tried that yet? Maybe the humid weather does affect them somehow, I don't know. Makes sense. What soaping projects are you working on right now? Good luck! nne :-)
Guest guest
I tugged, pried, yanked, and beat soap out of the mold today myself. I ruined both ends and marred up the sides of the soap. It HAS to be the weather. I've never had THIS much trouble. I finally got it free after putting it in the freezer for a few minutes and ran a knife around all sides. Terri Suggestions? I cannot get my soap out of the molds. Is this humid weather affecting anyone like this? Used these molds before but decided to try this hard bar recipe so it would slip out of the molds more easily (as it was suggested). Any experience with this or do I just have to wait (it has been a week). Guest guest
I had it in the freezer for about 45 minutes at one point. No luck. I even had my husband give it a shove. It's a vegan recipe with added cocoa butter and castor oil. I used titanium dioxide and some white mica to pretty it up with a fragrance oil from Brambleberry called Sleeping Angels. It is for a wholesale sale at a victorian decorated lunch place here in Binghamton. It is 100% humidity again today. I even sliced around the sides of one bar but cringed at ruining it (it's amazing how you become attached to each bar:)) I guess I'll wait a few more days since you had some unusual challenges too/ Suggestions? Guest guest
Hi there, I've seen your soaps around. They are wonderful. I stay about 90% with vegan, organic herb, essential oil soaps. Don't do molds alot but someone asked for them. Finally left them in the freezer overnight and they popped out this morning. Nice weather today huh? We should network sometime. Let me know. Guest guest
, Stick with real food, it is almost always much cheeper than replacements. Also, give up the supplements, you can do this with out them. Your protein choices are going to be more limited, so get creative with the spices. Do what you can to make meals as exciting as possible. Frozen veggies are not as good as fresh, but are always cheeper. Look for a farmers market near where you will be and you might be able to get cheeper produce there. Spring for a Sam's Club/Costco/Price Club (which ever you have near you) memebership now, while you have the money. Lots of things are cheeper there (2# of cottage cheese is $3.86 at Sam's!) Shop the sale flyers, and be prepared to stock up when things are cheep. Can't think of anything else right now, but I'm sure you'll get more advise. Guest guest
You can't get much cheaper than eggs or tuna. These are also both very high quality protein sources, so stock up. Sweet potatoes are a high quality carb source and they are cheap too. As has already been said, the expensive part of BFL is supplement buying. You don't have to. It might be a good idea to spring for a few bars to stash in your purse though because there's going to come a time when you are going to be faced with the hungries and have no alternative except an oreo six pack from the vending machine or the pizza delivery man. The bar will save you. Stasia
Guest guest
Well, I'm horrible at managing money but right now hubby and I are living on one income and I'm still doing BFL. I don't use any supplements, except protein powder and flax oil. Other than that I eat all real foods. I shop for sales. Go through all your grocery market ads, etc. and I determine my meals from there. Oatmeal and potatoes are great carb sources and very very inexpensive. Then I buy whatever lean meat is on sale and when it is on sale, I try to stock up if we have extra money. Veggies and fruits again, I eat what is on sale or I go to a local Farmers Market and get some bargains. If you have Costco or Sams, they often have good prices, but check first. If you live in an area that has Aldi's I have heard they are great, SuperWalmarts also are supposed to have great prices. Sometimes I use frozen veggies or fruit if it is on sale also. And if you have a 99 cent store, they often carry tuna although I'm not sure if it is light or not. If you have a Safeway in your area, they are almost always having buy 1 18 count carton of eggs, get 1 free. I use the whites and the dogs get the yolks and we're both happy They often also have frozen chicken breasts or tenders, buy 1 get 1 free. Guest guest
Welcome, Issac: Powder blends are usually a floral scent with vanilla and musk added. A typical " baby powder " scent can be made from equal amounts of rose fragrance oil and vanilla f.o. with just a touch of musk f.o. But by all means experiment! Try using violet, jasmine, lilac, ylang or orange blossom in place of rose. Once you have your blend, you can make a more complex fragrance by combining it with nuances of amber, tonka or sandalwood, and touches of lavender, heliotrope, carnation or lily of the valley, to name a few. If this is any help, I finally was able (after quite a few attempts) to comprise a scent that reminded me of " Love's Baby Soft " , a scent that was popular in the 70's: Baby Soft Blend 4 drops lilac f.o. 1 drop lavender e.o. Mix and set aside. This is your Top Note. Separately, combine: 2 drops heliotrope f.o. 1 drop rose f.o. 1 drop lily of the valley f.o. 1 drop carnation f.o. Mix and set aside. This is your Middle Note. Separately, combine: 2 drops vanilla f.o. 2 drops musk f.o. 1 drop tonka bean f.o. Mix and set aside. This is your Base Note. Combine 3 drops of the blended Top Note, 2 drops of the blended Middle Note and 1 drop of the blended Base Note in a separate bottle. Once you have decided on your blend, convert " drops " into " parts " , which can then be converted into larger quantities: milliliters, teaspoons, ounces, etc. Just be sure to keep it consistent throughout the recipe. I hope this helps...good luck! :-) Cat > I am new to this group and I think I have found a group of like > minded people who are also passionately obsessed with fragrances. > I am curious about what fragrances are blended together to make the > smell that we all know as " Baby Powder " ? Guest guest
Hello, GNC carries a " treatment program " for Candida that you might also want to try. I'm sure it will also have instructions and suggestions on how to keep the yeast build up from returning by eliminating and/or reducing various products/chemicals from your everyday diet too. If you don't happen to have a GNC or like them, I'm sure you could check with any local Health Food Store for this also. I have been going through some very challenging, stressful times w/my teenage daughter, moving, understanding myself in personal relationships, and not quite sure what the new chapter in my career is yet (sold my business) and I know all that is probably contributing - but there is something more. This morning I muscle tested and discovered I am " not willing " to release the symptoms. Any suggestions on " reversal " about something like this? Or how to get to why I am holding on to this and to let go. Any assistance is very appreciated!>> Please check out messages number 15145 and 15155 on our list regarding Candida. It’ll save me having to write it out over again: One_EmotionalFreedomTechniques/message/15145 One_EmotionalFreedomTechniques/message/15155 Re, UTI emotionally, if you take a look at the Balancing Meridians Emotionally exercise in the PIVOT manual, page 51, you will see that a) the bladder relates (+ve) to being in charge of your life vs. (-ve) feeling that others control you ....and a connected meridian - the kidney meridian - is about (+ve) I love to be alive vs. (-ve) I'm afraid to be alive. See if these apply to you and EFT them and any other related emotions/memories/traumas. 1. What helps in the PR is to do rub the sore spot and/or karate chop spot. 2. It also helps to do the 9-gamut, tapping the gamut spot on the back of the hand. 3. It helps to do the 9-gamut tapping the K-27 (kidney meridian) - collar-bone spot. 4. It helps to put in your 3-circuits (Page 31 PIVOT Manual) 5. In addition, if you have cross-over coordination reversals, it helps to do the cross crawl (page 30 PIVOT Manual) and another cross-over coordination exercise that I teach my clients in which they do 15 bilateral - 15 unilateral - followed by another 15 bilateral crossovers. (I usually teach this in a session). 5. If nothing is working at all, you may have entities, in which case, it helps to take some Rescue Remedy, and smudge yourself, the room and the house with sage, and with due intention, send away the entities....calling in your Higher Self or any Beings of Light you are comfortable with. 6. Worst case scenario, you may have an attachment, in which case, it's helpful to get someone else to support you....It can be cleared with TAT, or with the support of someone who knows how to do it. 7. In addition, there are particular herbs that are beneficial for UTI. Are you seeing a naturopath or nutritionist? If you’d like any further support you can write to me onlist or offlist. I hope that supports you somewhat. Let me know if you’d like a copy of the Manual. Warmly, Dayu ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TLR = Thanks, Love, Respect: “Water, I thank you. Guest guest
, This might be too late and might not be specific enough but my line when teachers say it isn't " fair " is the tired line that " fair isn't everyone getting the same thing, it is everyone getting what they need " . She is in that class because they are her peers in age not in cognitive ability. She should not be compared to them in ability. Just as we don't evaluate the tumbling moves in gym class to the Olympic athletes but rather to what an individual should be expected to achieve. good luck, Karyn **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)
