Fair is what is right or just for an individual (hmm note the I in IEP). If a person needs glasses is it FAIR to say they cannot have them because others don't need them? Are different size clothes fair? I mean shouldn't we all be the same size? It is not fair that they have to make all these different sizes. It is not fair that the typical kids can go outside and play with their friends and not have a parent standing guard. It is not FAIR that some kids get picked for Varsity football and others don't. Hey what the heck life is not fair. Fair is giving what each individual needs according to their personal needs (hmmm I see that I from IEP again). Is it fair my son got an extra chromosome and others got gypped? Okay lets look at history_ Gettysburg Address " Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.Okay so we are all created equal.Now in order to remain equal we have to give each Individual something different to maintain that equality (hmmm and IEP) Next a little more history-IN CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776 The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. (Looks like IEP's) In order for each of us to have the ABILITY to avail ourselves of our unalienable rights we need what is FAIR for us to be able to do so. Fair is helping a child that can not hear with sign helping a child who can not see with Braille helping a child that does not speak a certain language to learn a language in order to converse. Note not ALL people are getting this special help. Does that mean it is NOT FAIR?? No it means it is right/just for that individual. We are all different we all have differing needs what is fair is to assist others in obtaining what they need. I learned the teacher does not want to be frustrated, but does not always know what needs to be modified, so I should " come find her, email her " and let her know, and we will fix the problem... " no problem, just let me know. " I would rather have this thought out in advance, but it's better than nothing, and they do modify some of the curriculum in advance. She's a very positive, enthusiastic teacher, certainly one of the best 's ever had, so I didn't want to have to come to her every time I noted a little thing, but that's what she wants, so it looks like she and I are going to be buddies soon :-) I also learned that although I said the exact same words to the teacher, RSP, and inclusion specialist individually, no one really got what I said until I said it again, in front of everyone at the meeting. Funny to see the light going on, but too late for Reading Olympics. There will be less taking with individuals (except for the teacher) and more informal meetings. It's always nice after a stressful meeting for to really show me why we do this. Today was " Mission/Ranch Day " for the 4th graders (we're still on early California history), which meant rotating between weaving, candle-dipping, tortilla making, and designing their own " mission brands. " I had said I'd help with tortillas, so I now know how to make and cook corn tortillas :-) In any case, watching do all these things, and be so excited about her day " Look mom, here is my candle... Any suggestions on how to increase the amount of sprouts I'm getting in my diet via various recipes- ie salads, smoothies etc. I generally eat them after mixing them w/ avacado and other veggies and slop them on some romaine wraps....I'd like to increase my intake as I know they are super healthy but have run out of ways to prepare them....any ideas wouls be appreciated! Guest guest Posted April 8, 2011 Report Share Posted April 8, 2011 Hi everyone. I just wanted to give an update on Amelia, and see if anyone has any other ideas on controlling pain. We did return from our trip to D.C. three days ago, and it went pretty well. She was mainly in her wheelchair because of the severe pain in in her knees. But she was such a trooper, and the kids in her class were great. We were very apprehensive, as she had some really bad days prior to the trip. At the visit with the rheumatologist several days before, she had swelling in her knee, ankle and several fingers. She wanted to keep her on Sulindac and wean the steroids very slowly. However, over the last several days, she has had more pain than ever, and even in some new joints not affected before. I don't think it is the overexertion of the trip, as she was in the wheelchai most of the time. We were not supposed to see her doctor for quite a while, but she is going to fit us in next week, which I hear is very rare for a pediatric rheumy. I don't know what else to do for her pain. She is taking her meds, plus Tylenol intermittently, warm baths, paraffin for her hands and Voltaren gel. She is also extremely fatigued. Sorry this is so long, but any suggestions would help.
