well my aunt is 13 days younger then me. :-) and her oldest daughter (my

cousin) just graduated from high school this spring. My 3 oldest ones have

already graduated. LOL Of course my grandmother was 46 when she had Lou. Now

my

hubbies family well his oldest brother was 16 when he was born, the others

were 13 and 3......so familes do get spread out.

jennifer - I am going exactly by the book except for the a.m. part

of the workouts. I have to do my workouts when my baby (toddler) is

taking her nap. But understand, I still can't fit into Gap's Long

and Lean size 6 jeans -almost, but not quite! That's my ultimate

goal! (And two pullups).

Thanks for your welcome!

wellbutrin seems to make people loose so I hear) I am also worried about

the same thing. I started working out the day I started on lexapro. been

on it 6 or so months and my wieght is the same . but I want to point out

I cannot seem to loose any either. alison

Thanks for the response!

I have also heard that Wellbutrin is the best for losing weight, or

at least not gaining. I tried that a while ago and it gave me really

bad headaches. Maybe I should have suffered through, I only gave it

about a week and a half.

All this drug experimenting is frustrating!

I am trying to exercise, but I have problems motivating myself and

my appetite seems to have increased on these drugs.

Good job on maintaining your weight.

Sounds like you just had surgery. Don't rush it. RICE. Rest, Ice,

Compression, Elevation. The success of a LR depends heavily on strictly

following these rules for at least a couple weeks. I believe the main

reason my LRs " helped " my pain was because of the Cryo-cuff

http://www.supports4u.com/cryo.htm my first surgical doctor set me up with.

After that, I would recommend wearing Tubigrips:

http://www.continentostomystore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD & Product_C\

ode=CON151437 & Category_Code=If your doctor set you up with TEDS instead, I would

stronglyrecommendwearing them as long as he says. What part of the country do

youlive? Members of this group could give you some doctor recommendations. There

are only a few doctors in this country who seem to really understandthis

condition.MikeMT

I recommend BREG PTO knee braces. I wear them several hours each day,

and they are the only thing that has helped me so far. I couldn't

leave the house without them.

I'm tired of paying some doc to tell me PT(which hasn't really helped,

and they always give me the same exercises which still don't help, not

even after 6 years), or yet another non-steriodal drug, which won't

help more than the rest of them did or to just get a grip and deal

with it.

The only PT exercise that has ever helped me at all was to put a

little pillow between my knees and squeeze it.

Celebrex and Vioxx were the only drugs that helped at all. Right now I

take Naproxen, which doesn't do a darn thing as far as I'm concerned.

The only reason I bother to take it is they have me convinced it keeps

me from gettng worse.

Somebdoy here recently mentioned orthotics for the feet. I'm going to

have that checked very soon.

I have had CP since 15 and finally got into orthotics in my early 30's I believe

it kept the condition from getting worse.

I do not go one minute without my orthotics.

New Here!

Hi everyone,

I just joined this group. I don't really know for sure if I should be

here yet. I joined for my sister. She lives in a different state and

doesn't have a computer, ok, she has one but no internet and doesn't

touch it.

Anyway, she had a cold about a month ago and cough and went to the

doctor. When they did her blood test he noticed her platelets were

low. I think they were at 59,000. He told her to come back and they

would check them again, they went up maybe 1000.

Then she was sent to a hematologist. He did a blood test as well and

they were at 67,000 I think. He told her he thought she had hepatitis

C. She was an iv drug user in her youth, she is 52 now. She went

today and had a sonogram and had to drink something, nuclear?

They were checking her liver and spleen. I guess I'm just wondering

if low platelet counts mean anything as far as hepatitis goes?

To tell you the truth I was almost relieved to hear hepatitis instead

of cancer, though I know it is serious.

My other sister died about 4 years ago of multiple myeloma, my mom 2

years ago died of lymphoma and 3 months after that my dad died of

esophageal cancer. My oldest son was diagnosed with melanoma last

year and had the lymph nodes in his leg removed, he's doing ok though.

So, I didn't want to hear that she had cancer.

I always try to find out as much as I can about whatever someone

close to me is dealing with because I'm pretty much the only one that

is on the computer a lot.

She doesn't go back to the doctor for 2 weeks but she has a friend

that is a respiratory therapist that is going to call in and get the

radioligists report tonight. Also, she feels fine, wouldn't have

known if she had not went for the cold. I see that that is the way a

lot of people find out. Sorry this is so long, if you have any advice

or thoughts on what I've said so far, let me know. Thanks!

Hello...welcome to the group.

Are you sure it was a sonogram that your sister had? I've never heard

of having to drink something first? Perhaps there was something in

addition to the sonogram that they performed.

Low platelet count is related to bleeding problems. A lack of platelets

will lead to inefficient clotting when there is bleeding somewhere in the

body. I'm wondering if perhaps your sister is presenting as slightly

anemic, and she may have had her intestines checked for ulcers or

something. You do have to drink a dye with that procedure.

Liver trouble may be suspected as well, because your liver produces

prothrombin, and a lack thereof will also increase bleeding time.

It's a coagulation protein produced by the liver.

one more thing..... any doc who finds high or elevated enzymes and does not

proceed with liver panels and antigen testing and hcv, .... hepatitis

a-------z...... get another doctor............ there is fatty liver disease,

drug induced hep, autoimmune hep...... ok it is called the silent epidemic for a

reason. ok that's it. will post a couple of things, then I cannot believe anyone

in this world today would not automatically test for any type of liver disease

with elevated enzymes..... look at that football player who died when if he had

been tested years earlier he would have known he had a liver disease. In 1974 I

was living in Israel 1974 1974 and I gave blood for a friend, the army, police

and red cross came to my door and said......... you have some type of liver

ailment viral and if you ever give blood here again, you will be

deported............. so if they knew why did it take US until 1989 as they

continued to infect our vets, and Canada and all over the world.

tell everyone you know, get tested..... as you would with HIV.......... there

are many other liver diseases other than hep c. enzymes elevated..... full liver

work up...... sally, remember was infectious disease nurse before hepc was even

known.......... ok calm down get tested and have all your family members tested

often........ or if rarely passes makes you feel safe as I said rock on

You pointed me to www.healthcheckusa.com and I am not sure which

test to move forward with. They are below. I'm not sure which one

is best.

Anti-Thyroid Antibodies

Thyroid Panel

Thyroid Panel II

Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin (TSI)

TSH

Thanks

If you can afford to do it the VIP II is a good overall test. $125 I may add the antibodies to this.

Includes Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and Ratios, Triglycerides, Glucose(Diabetes), Kidney, Liver, and Heart Functions, Potassium, Calcium, Uric Acid, Electrolytes, Iron, Ferritin, PLUS a CBC (Complete Blood Count) and Comprehensive Thyroid Profile II: Free T3, Free T4, and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone).

Or just thyroid you have these two. If you have not done antiboides then you may want to check them.

Thyroid Panel II $85

Free T3 (Triiodothyronine),Free T4 (Thyroxine), and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone).

Thyroid Antibodies $70

Thyroglobulin Antibodies and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies.

At a minimum you should get the Thyroid Panel II but since Iron can play into the issues with thyroid that is a good thing to know which the VIP does too.

Hi Sue (hope that's the right name),

Welcome to the forum.

It's a familiar story, with little sign of it improving by repetition.

If you approach your doctor with a list of signs and symptoms s/he

may still not (want to) recognise the problem.

It helps to take a friend along to these meetings to keep track of

events (poor memory).

Be bold, with help if necessary, and ask if a trial of thyroid

hormone treatment would be appropriate after lab tests show

parameters (marginally) 'within range' ~ in view of your signs amd

symptoms.

Do ask for copies of your lab tests with the associated ranges.

Confirm your requests in writing and say you will do so, for your

records, with a poor current memory.

On the TPA-UK website, there are lots of helpful pointers.

best wishes

Bob

Take (repeated) basal temperature on rising in the morning.

Hi Sue,

First thing is to ask you doc to do TSH free T4 and Free T3

tests ( I bet the lab doesn't do the T3)to see if there is overt

hypothyroidism. Ask for the ranges when you get the test results and

post them here. If it is borderline ask for a trial of thyroxine' to

see if it helps'. Some folk the TSh never does go out of range as low

thyroid function can also suppress the pituitary which is why free T4 is

also important.

It is unlikely that you would get treatment for adrenals on the NHS as

only s total adrenal failure is recognised- there is advice in

the files.

When you see your doc to ask for the bloods take a list of symptoms-

see the files for an extensive one- it's easy to miss relevant stuff

otherwise.

Well worth persisting with doc as a diagnosis results in free

prescriptions for life and buying your own meds is very expensive.

Subject: New Here!

Hi All,

I am new on here and hoping to find some answers. I will probably

try to read as many posts as I can because I think they will answer

my questions.

My doctor has been telling me that my thyroid function

is " borderline " for years and I have suffered all sorts of symptoms,

including dreadful fatigue,

I am desperate to recover some of my health and wonder if you would

recommend persisting with my doctor - my overtures to him so far

have been fairly half-hearted as I wasn't so sure as I am now - or

if I should self nedicate with supplements. My income is low as I

have been too ill to work for some time.

Any suggestions/comments would be welcomed and much appreciated.

Hi Sue,

Welcome to the forum. I have suffered from many of the symptoms

that you listed. I have been a member of the forum for a while now

and I find the people on here to be very helpful and supportive.

If you are comfortable with this, could you please post your most

recent thyroid results (and the corresponding reference ranges) on

the forum? We all tend to do that when we join up so that others

can comment and provide input. Remember that none of us are

medically trained though, so it is always best to check everything

out with your doctor.

My previous doctor told me that I was 'borderline' for years too.

It wasn't until I swapped doctors that I received treatment. By

then my TSH level was quite high (almost 10mIU/L in a reference

range of 0.5 - 4.0) and I was very unwell. (nb: the reference range

at the pathology lab that I use in Australia might be different to

ref ranges in the UK). My previous doctor was very nice too, but

they simply didn't help me with my thyroid problems. Perhaps it is

worth going back to your doctor and trying one more time. That

decision is up to you though. If your doc doesn't want to help,

perhaps it is worth going to another doctor for a second opinion.

It can't hurt. I think that Sheila can help with names of doctors,

so it might be worth sending an email to her if this is something

that you would like to follow up.

I think it is a good idea to get professional assistance with using

supplements. I have a doctor who specialises in nutritional

medicine and I also see a very good naturopath, so perhaps it is

worth investing in some visits to someone like that, just to get

some advice. I know it is a bit expensive, but supplements are

pretty expensive too so it is important to make sure you are using

suitable products at the correct dose.

Anyhow, good luck with everything.

Thank you for your comments. I will have to go back to the doctor for

the actual results of my blood tests as he just says " they are

borderline - come back in six months " . Think I am about due for the

next one so I will get the actual figures and post them as suggested.

There is so much info on here I am a bit lost but I'm sure I'll find

my way round and I'm even more sure that I will appreciate the

community and the support.

Regards, Sue

Hi

Sue - make sure that you get the reference ranges for each of the tests, and if

you live in an area where the local laboratory refuses to test your Free T3 if your

TSH and Free T4 are within the normal reference interval, then ask your doctor

to write you out a separate blood request form and write on it " Free T3-

?hyperthyroidism " ONLY, and that way, they will do it.

Luv -

Sheila

Hi Katya,

Not too many of us like Isopure--we call it ISOPUKE. It does not taste good. The 1st 10 days needs to be clear liquids, so you need to find a protein that you can mix with water. I know that a lot of people have different proteins that have tried. www.unjury.com was where I got some protein that was chicken broth that I tried and used for a while. But to be honest with you the 1st 10 days I wasn't really so concerned about the protein thing. That might not be good for everyone, but I waited until I got to the next 10 days and used my Premier Protein Drink that I love and just used it. Find something you like, because if it taste bad you don't want to be forced to deal with it when you get home. For me the 10 days chicken broth what great for me. I had a difficult time swallowing any medication. I would suggest a liquid vitamin or a good adult chewable vitamin is what you need. I don't think there is one person who has a regret at all. I am not sure what you are saying when you say complications. My potassium was low, but I knew it was low before I had the surgery. You need to have a doctor that you can check with when you get home. You need to make sure they do your blood work so that you know you are doing ok.

You asked how do you stop losing weight. Well, how did you gain weight--eating more calories? So here is my suggestion. Eat a little more and exercise a little less. You will find your set point and it will be pretty easy to maintain. If you are losing and don't want to increase the amount of calories you are eating and don't exercise so much. Seems pretty simple to me. Calories in and calories out.

I hope that helps. It is always good to come back and ask any question that you might have. I have a list of things to take with you to Mexico if you would like I will post it for you. Just let me know.

Start Now Goal

Sleeved 10/21/08

Hi everyone! I am scheduled to have my sleeve with Dr. Aceves on the 23rd of January. I have been reading your posts for weeks now and wanted to thank you for all of the great information and support you've been providing. Since I scheduled my surgery a bunch of questions started to pop up, and hopefully I'll be able to have them answered here. For the clear liquids phase of the post op diet, do you buy the ISOPURE powder and mix it in water? What flavors are good? It also says I need to take the multivitamin, should I get that in liquid form? Or do I start the vitamins after the liquid phase is over? Anyone had any regrets/complications with the sleeve? Also, after you get to your goal, how do you stop the weight loss? I don't want to end up looking sick if I lose too much. I "only" need to lose 60-70 lbs. Sorry, so many questions! Thanks in advance for all of your help!Katya
