Guest guest
I know it's hard. I haven't spoke to my mom in two years. All because she refused to wake up and help herself. It's a long story and I don't want to bore everyone. And I Don't feel bad or sorry for doing it.....because I am trying to make a point. I'm not saying you should do what I did...Because it is very hard...I don't know how she is doing. So try this... Don't be so fustrated with her.... Be Proud and supportive of her. You continue to lead by example... She got the book and read it... she is just being a little stuborn. Just eating right and getting a little exercise will ,,better then sitting and doing nothing. Ya know she will loose weight with eating the meals and doing cardio...it may be slower but she will. I would bet her cholesterol will lower too. And she will start to feel better ..... ( Heck a week back into the program and my smile is back and I laugh easier.....) We all have our starting point... She can't really do this program just because you say so.... She has to do it because she wants to... Give her some time... And as much love as you can... She is trying... even if she isn't putting it all together at once. Guest guest
Hey Jana-- I have spent the past two years experiencing the same exact thing with my mom! She also has very high cholesterol and doesn't go overboard on terrible food, but doesn't eat enough good stuff, and she can't tolerate any of the cholesterol medications. But, I have the opposite problem--my mom loves to do the exercises, but she won't touch the food! If it makes you feel any better at all, it's really the food that will make a difference in her health. She won't end up all musclely like the rest of us, but chances are her cholesterol will drop and she'll see results. Who knows, maybe once she sees the difference that the food makes, she'll try picking up the weights. Just show her how it's done--lead by example!! Maggie > I am so upset with my mom. Guest guest
Hi Dawn, How often are you eating? If you're only eating a few times a day try breaking your calories up over 6 mini meals spaced evenly throughout the day. That works for me, I can't lose a pound if I only eat twice a day even though it's the same calorie amount. Thanks, Kerri rwd2lady wrote: > 2 on, and then drop 3 and put another on. Well, if this is your first fill, then you've probably only been banded a few weeks. You should expect to lose ZERO until you get your first fill at six or eight weeks. If you've lost 17, you're way ahead of the game. Even after fills, one to two pounds a week is excellent. Guest guest
Unfortunately it didn't get my entire message....obviously from the way it started. I usually eat 3 meals and 1 or 2 snacks to make up my 900 calories. I lost 19 lbs on the liquid stage and nothing since. I was banded on 07/14/05 and have been on solids for almost 3 weeks. I started the first 2 weeks at 750 calories and thought maybe I wasn't getting enough and bumped it up to 900 calories this last week. I also work out 3 times a week or more. My workout consists of 20 minutes (1 mile) on the treadmill and 20 minutes (3.3 miles) on the bike. Dan....Thanks for the reply....I'm just going to have to trust you on this, as you have much more experience than I do, but I'll be honest, it just doesn't make sense to me. What is the difference between eating 900 calories a day because you're dieting, or eating 900 calories a day because your band will only allow you to eat that much? It's still the same amount of calories going in versus calories going out, which is how people lose weight. And yes, I'm a terribly impatient person....gotta work on that one.....plus, I'm afraid I'll fail and it will all have been for nothing. I think that's my biggest fear in all this....I've failed so many times in the past, what makes this time different? My husband is 100% behind me but most of my family and friends have said what I've done is crazy and my mother even told me that she predicts that I will fail and that I will have wasted money....if your own mother doesn't believe in you, it's really hard to believe in yourself. Guest guest
Hi Dawn, I have a mother like that. The best thing you can do for yourself is not discuss it with anyone who you think might not be supportive. You don't need anyone undermining your efforts through psychological sabotage. They usually don't know they're doing it, but they do and it's dangerous to listen to it. I'm sure your fill will help you. Slow and steady wins the race! You're on a plateau. They happen, and don't always know why. Often our bodies are " consolidating " , meaning you may be losing inches but not weight. Also, with as much as you're working out, you'll be adding muscle, which is heavier than fat. That is often part of the consolidating. The last year, admittedly not following my own advice, I've been weighing daily. I'm well past it making me crazier. I also use a program that plots it daily, with a smoothed average plotted as well. I weigh naked, after a bathroom stop, every morning, and on a " doctor scale " (where you move the weights) For example....Saturday I'd gained 2 pounds over Friday, though had been very " good " on Friday. Why? Darned if I know. Saturday I went to a couple of events where I grazed. Probably took in 2500 or more calories, much of it of " bad stuff " . Sunday I had lost a pound. No, don't know why. r> terribly impatient person....gotta work on that one Yeah, know that one. Most of us are that way. I think r> that's my biggest fear in all this....I've failed so many times in r> the past, what makes this time different? You'll make it. All the rest of us have done ten or twenty different diets. I'll bet there isn't a diet in the country that someone on here hasn't done. Heck, I've done at least a dozen myself, including several types of drugs, starting 50 years ago with prescribed uppers. Guess what...didn't work. r> My husband is 100% behind r> me but most of my family and friends have said what I've done is r> crazy and my mother even told me that she predicts that I will fail r> and that I will have wasted money Well, that's why many of us did not tell others besides a VERY few, such as a spouse. But you can't untell, so.... r> ....if your own mother doesn't r> believe in you, it's really hard to believe in yourself. I wouldn't buy that reason. Many mothers don't believe in their kids. They may say that they do, but often don't really. After all, they don't want the kids to do better than they did. Is your mother obese? Or a skinnyminnie that has never gained a pound? I'll bet she's one of those two and has her own reasons for not wanting you to be successful and then able to say " told you so " . If the above isn't your situation and it is unfair to your family, my apologies....it is just that I've seen it MANY times. cheers dan Dan Lester, Boise, ID honu@... www.mylapband.tk Dr. Ortiz, Tijuana, 4/28/03 323/209/199 Age 62 Fair is whatever God decides to do. Guest guest
Dan, You hit the nail right on the head. My mother is 5' and over 400 lbs. Her doctor has spoken to her about having a gastric bypass and put the paperwork through to her insurance co. who immediately approved it, but she won't do it. She says she loves her food too much. Also, I know this will sound horrible, but I'm being honest, she would have to give up the excuses. Right now I or a personal assitant, do everything for her, including to help take care of my brother who is handicapped and lives with her. She was actually angry with me for having my surgery because it mean't that I would be unable to lift things and do errands for her for 4-6 weeks. She only leaves the house to go to the doctor, when he makes her come in to refill her meds, or to see her parents, which is once a year. She has her groceries delivered, her meds delivered, and I or the assistant do everything else. If she lost the weight she would have to do all these things, as she would have no excuse not to. I think that if she sees me lose the weight then she will not be able to say that it doesn't work or that it's dangerous, or anything else and then she'll have only herself to blame for her weight. As for my friends, well, they are thinner and sometimes I think that they like me being fat because it makes them look better, and they don't have a clue what being fat is like, how you think people are talking about you, how you feel uncomfortable around people, how ashamed you are because you aren't like they are.....not nice thoughts, I know, but what other reason could they have for being down on this. I've made it through surgery so the worrying about my death can no longer be used as an excuse. Thank you Dan, I truly feel better. I had been letting the words of others, who I know don't always have my best interest at heart, affect me to the point where I was doubting myself and my actions. I spent alot of time researching this surgery and the lifestyle that would be necessary afterwards, and I am confident that I made the right choice. Now, I just need to learn patience (now, now, now), continue to do what's right, ask questions if I'm confused, and let my band and I begin a relationship. Guest guest
First of all, you need more than 900 calories a day to do well with banding. Banding is not a diet - we have all been on crash diets and lost, but thern regained as sonn as we started eating again - plus even more weight. ther point of banding is to lose slowly in a way that will allow you to regain your health, form better food habits, and be able to KEEP the weight off. depending on your atrt weight, you need 1200-1500 cal a day - and if you are heavier, you need more. This will allow enough of a calorie deficit for you to lose slowly and safely. It will allow your metabolism to normalaixe from reguialr and adequate intake. It was all the crash and yo-yo dieting that got us into weight troulbe, asnd we must stop all that if we want to do well with banding. When your body is not gettting enough calories, it will not lose weight, but it goes into a " protection mode " so the muscxles and other tuissues are protected. It holds onto every single calorie, and it takes awhile after you start eating enoug again to start to lose. I'm not surprised at all by your stall, as we see it regulalry. Your doc should be instructing you about all this. If you need more help with eating, therer is a lot of good info in dr Ahroni's book - the only one written by a Band profrssional who is a banded Nurse Practitioner. http://www.iuniverse.com/bookstore/book_detail.asp? & isbn=0-595-31114-8 There are a lot of concepts about the band that are essential to lern, and it seems many come only from other more experienced and successful Bandsters. that's why sites like this one are so valuable (i hope). Do you know about the basic eatingt rulkes and guidelines, the amounts of protein/fiber/calcium, you need daily (you can't possibly be getting them in on only 900 cal a day) and the other band needs? WE'll be happy to help you learn what you need to know to do well. I'm sorry about your mom - but, as painful as it is for you, she has a right to make her own decisions and live (or pass away) as she wishes. I'm thankful that you have chosen NOT to live like that, but have taken control of your obesity and have found a way to change your life. Don't let your mom stand in the way of your success. You CAN do great, and we;ll help you. Sandy R > Unfortunately it didn't get my entire message....obviously from the > way it started. Guest guest
Write it in the IEP, or write a letter saying that you HATE to have to request an IEP over something that should easily be able to be cleared up, but Sydnie needs to be independent in the following areas, etc. It's funny because at that age, I would have paid them to meet at the curb, since our school was being torn down and we were in temporary buildings, all the way at the back of a different elementary school. I had to park in a muddy dirt lot, then walk probably 1/4 mile (at least) to the playground where the aide was sitting, doing nothing, waiting for me to deliver to her :-) I agree, if you have a safe and easy drop off location, there is no reason she can't walk to the playground with her peers, and if the aide needs to shadow at a distance for liability reasons, then by all means, walk 10 paces behind Sydnie. Since they don't get it, put it in the IEP. I always feel petty having little details spelled out, since it seems like a conversation or two should solve this, but since it hasn't, get it in writing, in the IEP. , mom to (12), (10 DS), and Sammy (9) angie wrote: > > I am sooo frustrated.....it seems to me that I cannot get through to > Sydnie's asst.....Sydnie needs a little more independance. Guest guest
If you go to DS Solutions and look in their back issues you'll find an article called " velcro aide " . If I were you I would print that out and send copies to the teachers and aide. Tell them that you would like to have a meeting to discuss some guidelines for independence and could they please read that article before you meet. They'll get the idea and when you meet they will probably have a list much longer than yours of ways they can work on it.

Guest guest
I do find it ironic that worshippers of modern medicine often have serious health issues. i.e. fertility problems, repeated surgeries, a constant " need " for pharmaceuticals, etc. I truly believe that if you live in the mainstream mindset (i.e. medicating everything, eating junk food, etc.) you NEED modern medicine. Because it is the only thing that will prolong your crappy life if you will not change. It won't heal but it will make you forget, for a short time, how sick you are. The whole thing is very sad. I'm sorry that you lost your friend but happy you found a new community. I was at a meeting on Tuesday (at my midwives', there is a parent support group every week that is basically all alternative parents) and all the moms breastfeed their toddlers, cloth diaper, don't use medicine, obviously home birth. Some just wear tank tops and pop a breast out any time their kid needs to eat. If you use disposables, vaccinate on schedule, don't practice extended breastfeeding...you're the weird one there. I love that environment and need to spend more time there. --Kate Mommy to Rebekah, 1-26-08 , 7-16-09 > > Yes, i learned years ago not to speak much about it. I lost my best friend. Guest guest
I agree, and that was a great point about needing modern medicine if you live the mainstream way. My sister-in-law is a nurse and she has chronic fatigue syndrome, glaucoma, chronic Lyme disease, and after my brother married her he became diabetic, all the while they're sucking down diet sodas and using Sucralose in everything, doing one crash diet after another. Her mom has multiple health issues, too, as does her son--adopted because of her fertility problems! It's a real struggle keeping my parents off drugs because she's behind pushing my brother to take them to the docs for one reason or another. Sad thing is, she means well but she's ruining everyone she touches because of her Drug 'em Up philosophy. Ironically, she recently quit her job to run a Healing Touch business! Yet, her mindset is light years away from that type of thinking. I can't understand why she chose to do that unless she wants to show she's master of alternative ways, too. I bet they'll get their flu shots. Again. Guest guest
SOUNDS HEAVENLY! :-D I was at a meeting on Tuesday (at my midwives', there is a parent support group every week that is basically all alternative parents) and all the moms breastfeed their toddlers, cloth diaper, don't use medicine, obviously home birth. Some just wear tank tops and pop a breast out any time their kid needs to eat. If you use disposables, vaccinate on schedule, don't practice extended breastfeeding...you're the weird one there. I love that environment and need to spend more time there.--KateMommy to Rebekah, 1-26-08, 7-16-09>> Yes, i learned years ago not to speak much about it. I lost my best friend. I should have known..she was such a huge 'friend' of modern conventional medicine. Her mother was a nurse. She got every jab her mother could find. Sadly she had a terrible time getting pregnant and other horrible health problems later in life. I shared with her about my health testimony, how we had chosen not to vaccinate and other advice. She was offended and i think she even got worried (after they did invitro for pregnancy) after they had kids allowing her's to play with mine. It was sad. We just realized we didn't have much in common. I wish i had not been so 'open' about them. I wish i had thought more about my words. I was just so eager to share with others about the news (i had taken Sheri's class) and was worried for others too (like my best friend). I probably went about it the wrong way. > > Now, i only ask when people truly 'want' to hear my opinion. Believe it or not i have made so many friends (we have a VERY close community) that have chosen NOT to vaccinate because of our very family. It must have been the best to have lost a friend....otherwise i would NEVER have learned the 'best' way to communicate the dangers of vaccines.> > Good luck> Jen Carver> GA>------------------------------------
Guest guest
Thanks for your input, everyone. I hope this works out for Amelia. To have your child be in horrible pain, and then be told you have to wait three months until the next appointment is ridiculous! My daughter's life is pretty much on hold right now. Today her class is having a bowling party, and she won't be able to bowl...she can barely hold a pencil. I will let everyone know how it goes. Right now I am packing for Florida, as we are contuing there after our appontment tomorrow. Jeanette
