Guest guest
I kept searching until I found a doc willing to let me vaccinate or not vaccinate. Start looking at Family Practitioners versus Pediatricians. They seem much more open than Peds. It is funny how everyone pushes that vaccines have to be given in order for your child to attend school. Nobody likes to talk about the loophole that almost every state has for a religious or philosophical exemption (every state has medical). You are lucky. Ohio has philosophical exemptions. And you can tell your Pediatrican that you are 'philosophically' opposed and will be seeking that exemption, so your child will have no problems getting in school. http://www.access1.net/via/STATES/req-oh.htm Exceptions: ORC §§3313.67.1(A)(1) to (4). 1) A pupil who has had natural rubeola or mumps, and presents a signed statement from his parent or physician to that effect, is not required to be immunized against the respective disease. 2) A pupil who presents a written statement of his parent or guardian in which they object to the immunization for good cause, including religious convictions, is not required to be immunized. 3) A child whose doctor certifies that such immunization is medically contraindicated is not required to be immunized. A school board cannot be required, because of written objection by his parent or guardian, to admit a child to school who has not been immunized. State ex rel. Mack v. Board of Education, 204 NE2d 86 (1963). > I want to thank all of you for the welcome! Here are a > few questions. Guest guest
I would love to recieve the info on exemptions! We live in columbus and our ped. is pretty good! She let us look at the inserts no problem and was really suprised when I showed her the thimerosal. She has since been requesting non-thimerosal form the drug companies and said she would be willing to order single shots for the mme. I want to let her know what I'm doing so that I can have her veiw on things as well. If she gives me a hard time we'll look for another ped. She is our second. My one friend didn't give her daughter vax. until she was one. Guest guest
Dear Kim in NC, Hi there, and welcome. I have an eight (almost nine) year old with OCD, which began suddenly after a bout of encephalitis when she was four. This list is a life-saver and I think it's wonderful you found it so soon. I just wanted to mention that anger is part and parcel of untreated OCD, and was the first and worst thing, along with a sudden rash of phobias, that we noticed when Annie got sick. Treatment has reduced that problem to *almost* a non-issue. Also, OCD can be, and probably very often is, mistaken for ADHD. As you learn more, and if your son gets his OCD treated and under control, you may find that many of the ADHD behaviors will lessen. (Granted, there are plenty of kids with true ADHD and OCD). When Annie's OCD is bad, anyone watching her would just assume she has ADHD - she seems so hyper, scattered, out of control. But that is generally just anxiety and lots of mental anguish preventing her from thinking clearly, if at all. So hang in there. Both OCD and ADHD are treatable. And in my experience, and from what I have learned from this list, a four year old with OCD is just about the hardest. It's hard to untangle wild four-year-old-ness from OCD behaviors, and it can be overwhelming. Time alone will make a big difference. Annie wasn't treated until she was eight, but as she got older it became easier to deal with her anyway. At least she became more articulate about what was bothering her. Good luck and take care, in Reno NV
Guest guest
Kim in NC, One of the most effective behavioural modification methods with kids with ocd, is to reward positive and ignore the negative. Of course, this also means that typical age appropriate behaviours are acknowledged and dealt with accordingly! For example, Payton throws a toy across the room because you wont put it 'just right' like he wants you to. You could return the toy and ask him " Who's in Charge? The nasty thoughts in his head, or Payton? " You could ask Payton to be strong and to let you put the toy as you want. Remind him that you do not listen to ocd's bossing. On the other hand, you could leave the toy where it lands. If Payton wants to put it " just so " in place, then he can retrieve it. In any case, You resist doing what OCD is telling you to do. When someone else follows ocd's rules it is called enabling. If Payton can put the toy, even for a few seconds, in a different place, then you reward him. If he can collect his toy and let you place it wherever you want to, again, reward! Rewards can be stickers, points, treats, etc. Always remember your role as the cheerleader or coach. It may help if Payton names his ocd. This is particularly effective for younger children to learn how to externalize the thoughts from reality. If Payton is abusive (throwing to hurt, kicking, biting, breaking, hitting,...), firmly name the behaviour. Time out in his room or another area is appropriate, depending on his actions. ADHD kids have very short attention spans, plus his age, means that time outs should be short - say 5 minutes. He has no real concept of time, so you may want to use an egg timer! If he is successful in going when told, cheer him on for staying there the designated time! Many of us are going to a conference sponsored by the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation. It is in Denver next weekend. I know that its short notice, but if you can make it - it will be worth every minute! Take care, wendy, in canada ============================ .... Our main problem is one that is recent and that is anger. I don't know if it is stemming from the OCD or ADHD but he has started hitting, kicking, screaming, etc... when things don't go his way. So if anyone else out there has this problem, feel free to give me some advice. I would love to have some ideas for discipline as well because nothing we do works. We have tried taking away toys, sending him to his room, putting him in time-out, etc.... Anyway, sorry so long. Guest guest
Kim: I am a mom with a 9 yo son, , who is OCD and ADHD. He was diagnosed at age 6, and most likely he has had OCD and ADHD since birth now that I look back at it. We're not the only ones with the OCD and ADHD combination. My pdoc was very good at taking it slow with the medication. But to answer your question, it is possible to medicate for both and is very common. Initially, started out with Prozac (for OCD) and Clonidine (for ADHD). The Clonidine made too sleepy so they switched him over to Tenex; he has been on that ever since. As far as OCD goes, he's been on Prozac, Luvox, Loloft, and now Anafranil and Celexa combination is working for his OCD. also has oppositional defiant disorder which he takes Risperdal (this is an anti-psychotic). Risperdal has really helped with the impulsivity connected with the ADHD and OCD. Also, it has helped him slow down his thoughts so he can sort out his thoughts before saying or doing something, at least some of the time. But with the three meds he is able to try and beat up OCD. Oh, another thing, Prozac and I think Zoloft come in liquid form which might be easier for Payton to take. There is hope. Payton is at a great age for ERP -- did much better at it when he was younger than now. I think he now realizes how hard it is and how scary it can be to confront his fears. I hoped this has helped some. WELCOME to the group, it has been a lifesaver for me -- now I know I'm not alone. Take care, we're all here for each other. Tamra (ocdmom2001) Omaha, NE Thanks! Thanks everyone for such a warm welcome. I should mention that we live in the Asheville, NC area. Amy asked me if we would be starting Payton on meds or behavioral therapy. The dr. didn't feel that he is ready to be on meds at this time but did say we probably won't make it through grade school with out them for the OCD and ADHD. I don't know how we will medicate for both???? Is that even possible? The whole idea makes me nauseous to think about. As far as behavioral therapy, he did tell us some things to begin at home but I intend to read up on it and ask him more about it at our next visit. Any suggestions would be great.asked what some of his behaviors are (OCD and ADHD) and if they are recent. Most of his OCD behaviors are lining up, sorting, straightening, etc... Once you do something one way you have to do it that way for life. Payton also did not eat solid food until he was 3 years old. He would only eat baby food. We now think that had something to do with the OCD. So, no, his OCD is not new. The ADHD is also not new but has gotten A LOT worse in the past few weeks. His main problem is that he talks incessantly - to himself, to us, to the wall, to his toys, you name it. He also has "ants in his pants" and can't sit still for more than 2 seconds. However, thank goodness, he is a good sleeper most of the time and still takes a nap. Our main problem is one that is recent and that is anger. I don't know if it is stemming from the OCD or ADHD but he has started hitting, kicking, screaming, etc... when things don't go his way. Guest guest
Hi Kim: IT takes a skillful pediatric psychopharmacologist to medicate comorbid OCD and ADHD. It is not uncommon for kids to get both these diagnoses. It is theorized that sometimes these disorders are genetically related, other times when the OCD is treated the ADHD gets better. The state-of-the art treatment for children with OCD is the Marck protocol described in Dr. March and Mulle's book, " Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Children and Adolescents " . Dr. March has a center for pediatric anxiety disorders at Duke University. Dr. Tamar Chansky's book, " Freeing Your Child from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder " , and Dr. Aureen Pinto Wagner's book, " Up and Down the Worry Hill " are also very informative. Teaching Payton his worries are just error messages in his brain will help him get started on learning how to boss back his OCD. Normal parenting techniques do not work well for kids with OCD. It does not work to punish them for behaviors resulting from their disorder. The best is to get good treatment and then use a behavior contract to help them learn how to control their behaviors. A good CBT therapist should be able to guide you through this. Good luck, take care, aloha, kathy (h) kathyh@... :53 PM 07/14/2001 -0000, you wrote: >Thanks everyone for such a warm welcome. Guest guest
Patrica, Welcome! If you have questions, ask! If you want to vent, vent! We are here for you as well as each other. Angie Mom to Sydnie DS, 19 mths Thanks! Hi everybody. I joined to the group a pair of weeks ago (patricia: I´m new in DS world) I just want to thank you all for the words, the support and the experiences that are sharing with me. It is really usefull to have other parents support: not only for the experience but most of the tme for the language. Several times when i left the doctor i got more confused than when i entered. Argentines doctors prefers not to tell you a lot except if you ask and they always say: do you have any doubt / question? Sometimes i don´t know what i have to ask as the information i manage is too litle: the one that they gave me! Belive me, in the 2 week that i´m in this group i learned more that in the 3 previous months! So far i´m learning daily and trying to make some minimals changes to my life to go through this route best prepared. This is my list... and is working!!!. I´m listening more music I´m praying for your kids instead ok asking god only for my family I´m enjoying every day with my childs now I´m paying more attention to very, very, very little details I´m learning and reading a lot, eventhough lot of people told me not to do that I´m crying if I want I´m laughing too much more than crying Marcos is doing very well luckyly. Take care! Mon of 3 specials kids, only one with DS Click reply to all for messages to go to the list. Just hit reply for messages to go to the sender of the message. Very close to xmas too... do you have all your shopping done? Three years ago, I had a hysterectomy on the 21st of December, and they let me go home xmas eve... what a fun xmas that was! I didn't have to cook though, but it was so rushed, and I only had a couple of days notice, got my shopping done and wrapped just in time. Lynn Thanks! > I just wanted to say thabks for all of the support. Guest guest
Unfortunately, I have to say that I have only a few presents purchased. We were out of town for Thanksgiving for five days and didn't get a chance to do any of the shopping I wanted to do. However, I do know what I'm going to get - it's just a matter of finding the time! I'm trying to get everything caught up at home and also trying to get a little ahead at work to prepare for my time off so I have to admit I'm a bit frazzled! I've always done the bulk of my shopping pretty much the week before Christmas so it's doubly hard trying to get it done. I figure that as long as I buy everything I need I can wrap while I'm stuck at home. I guess I can't spend all of my recooperative time playing video games, can I! I am also very fortunate that I am not really expected to cook, I usually only " help out " as I DETEST cooking - not that I mind eating the results! Did you finally get to enjoy your Christmas then? As to the " Friday the 13th " thing, my brother has always been particularly lucky on Friday the 13ths so I'm making sure I stay on his good side. I don't want him mad at me on his lucky day - there's no telling what might happen! Vickie > I forgot you were one of the " friday the 13th people " until you reminded > me... Guest guest
Hi Vicki, It wasn't so bad... I was a little drugged, but I managed. I have 3 kids... so they helped a bit. I got nice presents too... but it certainly wasn't like I could enjoy it to the fullest... Didn't even go out New Year's eve... That surgery was a lot tougher to have than the c-toma surgery, but the c-toma surgery took longer. I had a male nurse remove the catheter after the hyst... that was interesting... they should have had female nurses for gyn patients... but he was really nice. Guest guest
Hello Everyone, Thank you for listening and understanding! I spent the day today vacumming water from my finished basement. My husband unplugged the sump pump and forgot to replug. Several inches of water, I picked up gallons and didn't make a dent-the water still puddles around my shoes when I stand on the carpet. My daughter has her 12th BD party on friday with 22 kids, I pray that it dries out and doesn't smell too badly. I am still a mess emotionally-will call my doc tomorrow. I think I will return to work in two weeks. I can't apply for SSDI because I am a State employee and we don't pay into SS unfortunately-that's why I pay into this disability insurance (scam). Will still pursue though as I am only returning part time. I think I will do my job with more compassion and understanding as I work with the chronically ill, after this experience! It is tough dealing with $ stress in addition to health stress and everything else. Thank you for being here for me-you are a wonderfulk bunch of people-I am so lucky I have you. Love,
