Great post Vern, but before the antibiotics, it would be real good to do chlamydia screen during a pelvic exam, or urethral swab(not fun either). And since you're on the topic of LBP due to organic disorders, one of my patients who had chronic LBP was found to have IBS concurrently. Upon pelvic exam I could feel her sigmoid all bunched up, masslike, and sent her to her Gyn who ordered a LGI establishing the diagnosis(I would have made the order but the insurance would only pay $15 for each visit). Once the IBS was treated, her LBP resolved, nice viscero-somatic case. Steve Lumsden

"Chronic Back Pain"

Along the lines of unrecognized causes of chronic recalcitrant back pain hows about "chronic asymptomatic urogenital chlamydia infection?"

Chlamydia trachomatis infection is the most common sexually transmitted disease in this country and since it is a intracellular obligate parisitic bacterial infection, in the chronic stages it can be asympomatic. Through the venous plexus system that drains the urogenital viscera it can lead to a arthritis (chronic back pain) type symptoms and multiple sites of enthesitis/enthesopathy (heel pain, tennis elbow, knee pain, wrist pain etc.) all of which is many times refered generally to as "Reiter's syndrome" or simply inflammation of the joints.

All of the above musckuloskeletal symptoms never being associated with a chronic urogenital infection. It can lead to a whole host of problems in men and women if left untreated and is the cause of a great number of PID in women and prostatitis in men.

The tell tale sign I have found is that the men especially who suffer from chronic back pain, with or without intermittent peripheral joint pain, almost always can go to sleep with little pain but wake up in the early morning with pain. Having to get up in the early morning because they simply can't continue to lay in bed due to the back pain. The other sign is the prostatitis they guys all have to get up in the middle of the night to urinate.

A two week course (I think its two weeks) of Doxycycline or Azithromycin cures these folks back pain but their spouse or partner most be co-treated to prevent re-infection. This is more common than you can imagine and when your right on with the DX its absoluetly cures their back pain, and they sleep a full 8-9 hours for the first time in years. Talk about wowing your MD colleagues, they ain't for the most part gotta glue!

I was first turned on to this back in 1987 by Namey, MD., an Orthopedist (non-surgeon) at the Univ. of Tenn. He spoke at the American Back Society and I have thanked him often.

Steve,

do you know how the IBS in this patient was treated, I have been basically unimpressed with most medical approaches to IBS. I find that allergies, dysbiosis, and digestive support, as well as possibly visceral manipulation, is necessary for correcting Irritable Bowel.

Mark,

Good question and I too have not been impressed with IBS treatment in allopathic offices. In this case I didn't see the paper, but according to the patient, bulking agents and water worked. She is also very high-strung and was in a terribly stressful work environment. I leaned on her hard to quit, and after a year, she did. I am sure that there is the things going on as you have suggested, but $ has become the issue, and my internal work is not covered. Steve Lumsden

I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for over 20 years. I have

S curve scoliosis and a grade I spondy at the L5-S1. Last December I

had a surgeon in San Diego, CA perform a spinal fusion, which went

flawlessly and with quick recuperation which he attributed to my

general fitness level.

This took care of the pain which would shoot down my left leg, but

once I was up and about, I found that I still had that hard to define

pain in my lower back. He recommended a physical therapist in

Encinitas, CA who over a matter of 5 weeks taught me

how to make my pain go away.

It took a combination of surgery, specific exercises, some

stretching, and learning to become more aware of my body to solve the

problem for me.

I discovered, through my physical therapist, that what had exacerbated, if it

was not indeed the primary cause of my lower back pain, was over 20

years of " sucking it in " . Obsessed with having a flat stomach, I

walked around tense all the time. Now I " let it all hang out " and I

have no pain. As soon as I start to tense it a bit I feel the pain

start in the lower back. I only have a 33 waist so I suppose I

shouldn't worry about it.

Kind of ironic that it seems that the cause of my pain was: Vanity!

I'm just glad to feel like a " normal " person.

bG, Is there any experience which tells if application of Godzilla can be of

help in relieving back pain due to scoliosis, deterioration of the spine from

age and arthritis? I am desperate for something which might lessen my wife's

continual back pain. I have a setup partly built so can proceed soon.

BTW: Any thoughts about the medical marfia attacking a website devoted to this

type of treatment? Bill

Bill, I've had back issuses since '89 and I've learned a few things.

1) Pain causes inflammation.

2) Inflammation causes pain.

3) Full-body (ankle-to-ankle) 6V lantern battery treatment reduces CPK values so I assume it reduces systemic inflammation.

4) Anti-inflamation diets work. Several universities have them on the web. Google them and look for them in pdf so that they download easy.

And lastly, something counter-intuitive. Keep her moving.

I doubt if the conditions you mentioned are fixable, but the discomfort is addressable.

Jim,

Thank you for your comments. I am just getting together a godzilla with the 6v battery in hopes that I can relieve some of her pain, IF she will tolerate more fiddling. Doctors are no help. She tries to keep moving and does walk around the yard attending her plants, but cannot walk very much because of the pain. I agree with you that her condition is not fixable but will settle for better comfort.
