Donna:

I'm so glad you're starting on LifeLift. I just started almost two

weeks ago and have already lost 3 lbs and inches off my waist, upper

abdomen and thighs. Not to mention the extra energy that I've

experienced. I wish you success in getting started and I'm glad you

joined this list! I know I've enjoyed it and have found these ladies

to be uplifting and inspiring!

Hi Donna,

Welcome to LL. We're glad you're here! I think that you'll really enjoy

the workout. It's very relaxing, energizing, and it works! Practice the

breathing and concentrate on getting it right before you worry about the

positions. Once you get the breathing down and add the positions, your

goal (when you feel you are ready) is to work up to 40 reps. a day (5 or

6 days a week). Don't forget to drink lots of water. Stay consistent and

you'll see results. We're here for you.

Have a good night!

Love and prayers from Cincinnati

Liz

Kate,

That is such a good statement. I expected to have all of the inches just

melt off of me because that is all I ever hear. It has taken me a long time

to even see any results. I did quit for a little bit because I didn't see

any results. But, in the long run, the inches did slowly start to come off.

I am still in the need of loosing more, but at least I am still exercising!

Hi Donna,

Been there, done that. LL should be great for you. The extra oxygen helps

with energy and mood. Bet you felt like you were slogging thru molasses,

huh?

Beware of expecting too much too soon. You have to get all those old meds

out of you system, which in my nonprofessional experience takes much longer

than the label might indicate. The LL breath helps in the elimination of

toxins via exhalation but remember fat holds toxins so you might be prone to

little episodes as some of those are released. I think the breathing really

does help getting those out faster and with less side effects.

Be kind to yourself, patient and positive. You want to be especially

diligent in emphasizing the positive so as not to slide down into the blues.

Don't berate yourself if you don't get the high speed results some lucky

people experience. Just making the positive steps you are doing is already a

success. More will follow. The wonderfully supportive liters are great

there.

Also, please consider the Victory Theory tapes. The advice is super but just

hearing the words from someone else, especially our own dear soothing

Rashelle, seems to make them take hold more.

Good luck - you can do it,

Kate :~)

Hi Donna, best of luck to you. You will love LL because it will not only

help you to tone up and lose inches but it does such wonders for your lungs

and other organs not to mention just feeling so revived. I take breaths

everyday whenever I think about it when I'm feeling a little lethargic and

it really helps me to keep going. Don't hesitate to ask any of us

questions. If we don't have the answers we'll find them out for you.

You're in the right place for encouragement and help. Good luck

I suffered with mild depression all my life. I was never willing to take

medication, but now that I exercise it is completely gone. My doctor was not

surprised to hear this, she always suggests exercise before medication in

cases of mild depression. Just one more reason to sweat!

Welcome! I am new here too. I am still kinda lounging

all day but it's cuz I get up at 3am and go back to

bed after running around out in the cold for 3hours (I

deliver newspapers)...so I feel no energy or lazy most

of the day. BUT...I've started moving again and it has

improved things. My housework sorta gets done, I am

more motivated to exercise, my mood is improved, etc.

When I gain weight I fall into a weird sort of

mindset...I can't get things done, I lay around, watch

more movies, get addicted to stupid computer games, I

am told I don't look happy, etc. So I think it is on

the brink of depression but as soon as I start eating

better and especially exercising ...WOW...things

change. So maybe that will help you too. I've lost 4-5

water pounds the last few days so I am feeling better

about that too. I know if you continue with your plan

you'll see a big change and enjoy life more. We can do

it together.

Hi ,

I am ashamed to say I had not a clue how dirty my

house had gotten until I got up and started *really*

cleaning again. I have always said my house gets

cluttered but underneath the clutter I kept it clean.

Some where along the lines the underneath wasn't

getting clean anymore. UGH!

With our move coming up I am starting in one room at a

time. I am sorting and cleaning and doing DEEP

cleaning in preperation of packing. I started last

week and have managed to find a bunch of trash and a

carload of stuff for goodwill. We have 28 days till

close on the house and I have no idea if I can get it

all done in time *sighs*

I am thinking the activity of being up and moving

around and cleaning will provide some results and

those results will help with the motivation to keep

going. Between the prep work on this end and then the

painting and what not on that end and then the packing

and unpacking... well I better see some results hehe.

My youngest son was born in March 99 and I was only

135 lbs and a size 8 at the time. By March 00 I was

pushing 200lbs and a size 20. Now I am sitting at

235ish and size 26 and have been here at least a year

or so. It took me 3 years to get here and I am hoping

it doesn't take 3 years to get back, but even if it

does at least I won't still be where I am.

Tomorrow morning I am doing my first *official* weight

check. I know my last dr apt I was right around 235,

but I haven't been on the home scale in months and I

want to have some kind of starting point. I look

forward to doing it all together!

Jen:

Do whatever you can to make you feel good about yourself. If that means

putting on make-up every morning, do it.

I have only been doing this for a week, but I have learned that my attitude

is a large percent of the battle. I really hope you do whatever you need to

do and we will support you.

I started last Friday at 220. I now weigh 214. I have had no meat or animal

products or any fats/oils or refined carbs. I feel great. I really do not

miss the other foods and my jaw actually hurts from chewing all the veggies

and high fiber carbs.

I have made my exercise program to suit me. I love yoga and tai chi, which I

combine with walking.

It is not easy. In fact this is the hardest thing I have ever done (and I

have been through Navy boot camp once and officer candidate training ran by

Marine Corps drill instructors-I still have nightmares-lol)

I truly understand how you feel. I went from 104 pounds and 11% body fat to

220 over a period of 14 yrs. I look at my wedding picture and shake my head.

My 12yr old can fit into my wedding dress.

So keep your chin up. You are worth this. You are worth more than your

weight or any thing else.

Take care and if you need anything, please let me know.

Oh ,

I can relate to that. I have an 11 year old that is

wearing the clothes I wore AFTER I had my youngest one

I hate seeing her in all these cute little outfits

when I feel like couch potato.

I have to say I have been moving all day today. I have

only sat down for more than 15 minutes once. Course

now I have been sitting for about an hour... and

pretty soon here I will be vegging out for the

night... lol

small steps... but I am doing it.

Hi Jen,

Congrats on taking the time for you to get started!!

I have a few friends that have Lupus and I know how

hard it is for them to lose weight. Only one has been

really successful and I'm sure it is because she is in

remission. It is very hard to lose.

I hope you will post often and if you need anything

let us know!!

Hey, what a coincidence! I'm also a " pre-newbie " , and I too am

scheduled for April 8th surgery with Dr. Montgomery. Obviously, I

don't have any pearls of wisdom to offer you yet, , but I do

wish you best of luck with your surgery.

Hi and Jeff,

I just got banded on 3/24 at Evergreen Hospital. I also work in the

operating room there. I know Dr. Montgomery and work with him often.

In fact his partner (Dr. Watkins) was the assist with my doctor (Dr.

Clinch) for my procedure.

Helpful hints:

1. I know they like their patients to lose a few pounds before the

procedure. This does make a difference as far as how difficult it is

to visualize the area the band is placed. It can make the difference

between a case taking 60 minutes -vs- 120 minutes.

2. I think it really helped to be on a liquid diet for a couple of

days before the procedure. The Adkins protien drinks really work

because they stick with you for a while.

3. The hospital is set up well for the program. They use what is

similar to a hover matt that will be well concealed under the sheet.

This is great for moving you onto and off of the stretchers and same

for moving you onto your bed post-op. It works with air. The

mattress fills with air and literally lifts you off of the bed. You

don't have move over by yourself (which can be embarrassing).

4. They have appropriately sized gowns/stretchers/wheel chairs for

us that are a little fluffy. They make every attempt not to make you

feel large. They start the IV and then interview you(ask health

questions) you usually get a coctail(some meds to relax you) before

going back to the OR. Once in the OR you will notice a lot of

equipment. This is all used to help the OR team do your surgery

perfectly. All the equipment is top notch and works like a charm.

Once moved over to the OR bed, the OR nurse will place a mask over

you mouth and you will be asked to take a few deep breaths. Your

doctor will come into the room and comfort you until you fall off to

sleep. I honestly don't remember much after that.

5. Post-op: I woke up in no pain. They use quite a bit of local and

it lasts most of the day. I had very little nausea, which was easily

taken care with meds. You will have boots on your feet that

inflate/deflate regularly, which helps to reduce your chances of

getting any blood clots in your legs. You will get a couple of

injections of Heparin over the next 24 hours to aid in this also

(usually in the leg).

6. The anesthesia made me groggy so I had to have O2 nose cannula.

Kind of irritating, but necessary.

7. The room you will go into post-op is a beautiful single room with

a couch that turns into a bed if anyone wants to stay for the night

with you.

8. The staff are very supportive and positive about the surgery.

9. You may get some shoulder pain from the air left in the abdominal

cavity. I got some but it was not bad. You get broth and jello and a

couple of med cups to drink it with. Just drink it slowly until you

know that it is going down well. You will know right away. It took

me all day to finish my first serving but it was a lot easier to eat

the dinner version (which is just more of the same)

10. Day after surgery: This was my worst day and it wasn't that bad.

The local wears off and the incision that the port was put in is a

little painful when you get out of bed. You get visited by the

nutritionist and the bariatric counselor. They are both very

supportive and are a wealth of information. Make sure to have plenty

of broth, jello, and other clear liquids available at home before

you go in for surgery. Maybe even make up some jello the morning of

surgery. That first day home from the hospital all you really want

to do is sleep. But make sure to try to get your fluids in.

11. 6 days later: The only discomfort I have is still the site of

the port but I am told this takes a little while to go away.

Your " new " stomach lets you know just how much it wants. Pressure is

a sure sign you need to stop eating(drinking). Gas seems to be a

little bit of a problem. It doesn't feel good in the stomach and

seems to be abundant coming from the other end(feels good when it

comes out but is a little embarrassing, ha ha!) I've been told GasX

works well so I just got some today. I feel well enough to go back

to work and hope to do so after seeing the doctor on Thursday.

Both Dr. Montgomery and Dr. Watkins are great. Their patients have

lost almost 10,000lbs. in the last year. They have a great nurse in

their office that is also banded and has perfected the art of fills.

The doctor I am going to, Dr. Clinch, is also very good. We are

lucky. Great surgeons, great support from the hospital, and a great

support group to go to. Congratulations on making a decision that

will only improve the rest of your life. May be I'll see you on

April 8th, if I'm allowed to go back to work. Write me and let me

know how you do.

Hope this helps you both!!!

Take Care and Good Luck,

Kathy Ross (sorry so long - just very excited about this new step)

Thank for all the info, Kathy. You've given me a lot better idea

what to expect, especially in terms of the post-surgical experience

and the meds I'll be receiving. I'm not sure, but it sounds like you

stayed overnight at the hospital. I'm scheduled for an outpaitent

procedure, so my experience may be a little different than yours.

Hi Jeff,

You're right mine was done on inpatient status. I will be anxious to

hear how the outpatient -vs- inpatient differs. Good Luck. Maybe we

will meet at the support groups. I'll be thinking of you on the 8th.

Good Luck,

Hi Jeanette and Welcome!

It sounds like you're doing the right thing in seeking second (or

even third) opinions!, and arming yourself with as much knowledge as

possible to help your little guy.

Firstly, I want to ask what surgery is the Ortho recommending? There

are surgeries that are more necessary and successful than others. I

would personally stay well away from a fusion at this time, and the

same would go for growth rods. There is a surgery, Titanium Rib that

IS working for kids.

Where is your son's curve? Does he have a compensatory curve? I'm

guessing that his scoliosis isn't considered Congenital? Has he been

braced at all? I'm guessing no?

My daughter (5yo) had a 45 degree curve, though she'd been wearing a

plactic brace, 23 hours a day for approx a year. We now go to

Shriner's in Salt Lake City where the Ortho is " casting " . Right now

her curve is 8 degree's!!!!

We are one of the families that travel, as we live in Vancouver,

Canada. But obviously we think its worth it!

I'm sure others will reply to your post, but I just wanted to say

Welcome, and you're in the right place for advice and support.

Hi Jeanette,

I live in California also. I go to Utah and see Dr. D'Astous for my 1 year old son . Sacramento was not even an option for me since they don't cast there.

I am in Southern California, where are you?

Welcome to CAST !

This is a very educated, compassionate, genuine group of parents who have a

lot of insight on the different types and treatments for

Beth,

I am just starting this journey, too. Like you I work full time and am

raising 4 kids. I don't know much about the process but would be willing to

chat if you would like to.

Hey everyone. I'm looking for some support, and would like to give some

support, too, after I get going on this thing. It's really hard for me to

believe that it works. I'm just a regular person who has two jobs, is

raising two kids by myself, and doesn't have a whole lot of fun stuff going

on, because all I do is work! I am looking for some happiness and

self-esteem. I'm tired of looking frumpy and having gross clothes to wear.

I am about to work at a college, and I want to look better! Any words of

encouragement??? Thanks- Beth

I've been on and off exercising for almost three years. I've had

some successes, but something always seems to derail me. So, I

kinda consider myself in the same boat--a beginner. I think that if

you really want it badly enough, anything is possible. Good luck

and work hard!

the encouragement. Yes, I'd love to chat with you about B4L. Beth

Beth,

It does work. I dieted on and off most of my life without results, but

BFL has worked for me and it can for you too. I have dropped 55 pounds

since January, without cravings. I think the best advice I can give you

is to log and measure everything you eat, whether it be by pen and paper

or software. Invest in an electronic food scale. I use Diet Power

software to log my food intake. Read Skwigg's site and Hussman's site.

Especially this section http://www.hussman.org/fitness/#trouble.

According to Hussman most people under estimate their food intake by

50%! I was one of those people. It takes a deficit of 3500 calories to

lose a pound of fat. That's only 500 calories a day.

Put the effort into planning your meals. Do _not_ allow yourself to

leave home without food or knowing that you will have access to healthy

food. Always keep a can of Fat Free Reddi Wip in your fridge in case of

an emergency! When I started BFL, my friends and co-workers would rib me

about toting around my little cooler full of food and water. I just took

it in stride and kept to my plan. Those same friends are now VERY

interested in how I have lost so much weight. They are now asking my

advice on what to eat and how do they get started on their weight loss

journey.

BFL has become a way of life. I still log my food, because I am a nerd

and love to run the number, make charts, and drive people crazy with my

uncanny ability to look at their plate and give a calorie total for the

meal. I think and I were separated at birth. At this point I can

estimate most of my portions. I do however occasionally check myself to

keep my eye calibrated.

Good Luck!
