Guest guest
Okay-- Thanks for all the encouragement. Now I am going to sound whiney. (Whiny?) I actually do write down everything that I eat, but it's crazy stuff like candy and then I'll eat healthy, then back to plates of birthday cake, etc. etc. It seems that I just exercise so that I can eat like a crazy person. And I know this sounds whiney, but when I start to lose weight, I get a headache, and I don't feel good. I have been stuck at this weight (hovering around 162) for at least 5 years. Yuck!!! Beth elizbeth@... wrote:Beth, It does work. I dieted on and off most of my life without results, but BFL has worked for me and it can for you too. I have dropped 55 pounds since January, without cravings. I think the best advice I can give you is to log and measure everything you eat, whether it be by pen and paper or software. Invest in an electronic food scale. I use Diet Power software to log my food intake. Read Skwigg's site and Hussman's site. Especially this section http://www.hussman.org/fitness/#trouble. According to Hussman most people under estimate their food intake by 50%! I was one of those people. It takes a deficit of 3500 calories to lose a pound of fat. That's only 500 calories a day. Put the effort into planning your meals. Do _not_ allow yourself to leave home without food or knowing that you will have access to healthy food. Always keep a can of Fat Free Reddi Wip in your fridge in case of an emergency! When I started BFL, my friends and co-workers would rib me about toting around my little cooler full of food and water. I just took it in stride and kept to my plan. Those same friends are now VERY interested in how I have lost so much weight. They are now asking my advice on what to eat and how do they get started on their weight loss journey. BFL has become a way of life. I still log my food, because I am a nerd and love to run the number, make charts, and drive people crazy with my uncanny ability to look at their plate and give a calorie total for the meal. I think and I were separated at birth. At this point I can estimate most of my portions. I do however occasionally check myself to keep my eye calibrated. Good Luck! Guest guest
Well, obviously one cannot lose weight while eating candy and cake. The headaches could be from sugar or caffine withdrawal, and will only last a few days. As long as you continue to eat sugar laden food you WILL crave it. Once you get it totally out of your system you should not have cravings. The point of writing down your intake is to provide you the ability to identify your short comings and correct them. You have obviously identified them. Just think of all that exercise you are doing, but without any results. No one but you can make better choices...it's all up to you. Guest guest
If you want something enough, doing it becomes the easiest thing in the world. How much work is it to motivate yourself to eat ice cream or go shopping or watch TV? We really want those things. They make us happy, so doing them is a breeze. As soon as you get a taste of what it feels like to be strong, happy, confident, successful, and in control, you won't want to let go of it. Once you're buying smaller clothes, seeing some muscles, receiving some compliments, helping other people, you'll get up every day looking forward to more of the same. Going back to the depression and frump clothes and low self-esteem won't sound like any kind of an option. And it's not that you develop iron will-power; it's that feeling good becomes easier and more fun than moping around and kicking yourself. Here's something that might help you get your motivations straight. I read the " Brain on Body for Life " piece, and I printed it out and am about to go write down the answers. Thanks to everyone who has taken up so much time today trying to help me get on track. Guest guest
, you could probably sprout any seed/bean you get in a health food store, but " sprouting " doesn't necessarily mean they'll actually sprout. Some seeds just swell. If you're health food store is anything like mine, they'll probably already have prepackaged sprout seeds that are organic, so you won't have to worry too much about wasting time, money and energy. However, if they don't, there are a couple of good sites where you can purchase certified organic sprouting seeds. Just google on those last four words. As far as a book goes, the one I have is pretty down to earth and it's by Ann Wigmore. I think the title actually is " The Sprouting Book. " The most important part of the book, for me, is this wonderful table which shows not only what seeds, but what nutrients they offer, how long to soak them, how long to sprout them, etc. Best of luck. Guest guest
Hi , I've been sprouting (off and on) for about thirty years now and I find the seeds that I get at my local health food store are alright for sprouting and I get my lentils, mung beans, broccoli, clover and others from them. After a while I found the selection to be quite limited, my health food store has only two types of lentils (and only the green will sprout) and no whole peas (the local demand must be for just split peas). Since I eat lentil sprouts every day I want more variety than just green, so I had to find other types on the internet. So I would suggest that you start at the health food store and let your sprouting passion grow and see where it leads you. One of the best sources of information about sprouting is the .com website. They have a sprout school and detailed instructions on sprouting each of the many varieties of seeds that they sell. I've been sprouting for a long time and I have learned things from this site that brought my sprouting to a new level. You may find you don't need a book! Guest guest
Leron, you mentioned only the green lentils will sprout. Have you tried the red lentils? Not those bright orange ones, but the reddish brown lentils. They're a bit on the small side. I sprout those and they work fine. Guest guest
Rose, Thank you very much. I have gone to my local health food store and purchased green peas and quinoa seeds. I am going to start them tonight and see what happens. And I am going to order the book you recommended. > > , you could probably sprout any seed/bean you get in a health food store, but " sprouting " doesn't necessarily mean they'll actually sprout. Guest guest
Hi Marty~ I'm also in Metairie but I am also just getting started. I should be able to share a baby and starter tea in about a week or so. But if you don't mind waiting, its all yours. But just to warn you, I do continuous brewing so it isn't as pretty as someone selling their scobies. From what I understand the scoby is just as effective though. Let me know! Guest guest
Romaine's a very good choice for a neutral leafy green but apparently it's somewhat less neutral than spinach. On the other hand, you probably don't want to be eating spinach every day (it's a good idea to rotate your greens) so romaine would be my own substitute. As to whether or not it makes a difference, that's for your palate to decide! You have to please you and yours and ultimately, you're the judge. You need about 25% liquids/soft stuff to 75% "frozens" and you also need to be careful about the order of placement; did you follow the recipe to the letter? There's really no getting away from this when you're a newbie. Also, did you follow the instructions regarding the use of the tamper to work the ingredients towards the blade from all four corners of the container? I think you need to go with fresh produce for salsa, not frozen. Freezing lyses the cell wall of produce (and other things as well) and when it thaws, it's mush. Even if you process it while frozen, you don't serve it that way and besides, your Vitamix is made to process frozen foods on HIGH, not the VARIABLE speeds (sorry, my machine uses upper-case, which is why I follow suit); this could even cause your machine to shut off temporarily. I imagine Lea Ann will kick in soon but I'm pretty sure that you aren't going to get the results you want by trying to chop frozen food in your Vitamix. We're DELIGHTED to give advice! just getting started I love this machine! Best purchase EVER!!! Now a few questions...in need of suggestions. I made the emerald smoothie but didn't have spinach so I added romaine. It made it refreshing but you could taste the romaine. I was the only one to drink it. Does spinach vs romaine really make a big difference? I made the most delicious drink ever but i'm not sure what veg to add. It was frozen banana, frozen mango, fresh pineapple and almond milk. YUM! It was so good it could have been a mixed drink at the beach! We also made ice cream. It would not form the pillows. I think I added too much ice but it also melted pretty quickly. This did not stop my kids from licking their bowls clean. I made baked tilapia and rice tonight for dinner so I thought..hey let's try a salsa. I made mango pineapple and peppers with a little Orange Juice. It was delicious but not well chopped. The foods were frozen and I tried to chop it on level 4. Any suggestions for next time? I appreciate any and all advice! Thanks Michele

Guest guest
I think the basis for it is the oxalic acid contained in many greens; I think it has to do with the fact that it can be a problem for those prone to kidney stones. Not all greens contain it (e.g., I don't think any of the lettuces do), so if you rotate, you're less likely to have a problem. Also, it's probably a good idea in general not to eat the same food every day if you can avoid it. just getting started I love this machine! Best purchase EVER!!! Guest guest
Oh, man... but I LOVE my daily bowl of oatmeal!I'm glad to have the "why" behind the recommendation to not eat the same greens every day. I've been thinking - oh really, could it be all that bad to eat spinach every day? I mean, after all... Popeye eats spinach everyday, and it doesn't hurt him ... quite the opposite - it makes him STRONGER!!Oh, well. I guess I must venture out and try new greens in my smoothies. lolFrannyOn Apr 7, 2011, at 8:13 PM, wrote: I think the basis for it is the oxalic acid contained in many greens; I think it has to do with the fact that it can be a problem for those prone to kidney stones. Guest guest
As others have said, it is good to rotate your greens - here's 's reasoning on this: http://greensmoothiesblog.com/green-smoothie-rotate/I have found that Romain can be bitter AT TIMES. I don't know if it is a seasonal thing, or a particular crop or what, but sometimes my orange and romaine smoothies are awesome and sometimes they are just "good" because the romaine has an extra bitterness.Regarding the ice cream and the salsa - have you reviewed the recipes on my vitamix lady website? Guest guest
I happen to think romaine is milder in most cases that spinach, but take my words with a leaf of kale, I will try most any green in my smoothies. haha. My favorite is, the kale. Velda On 4/7/2011 4:57 PM, micknab wrote: > I love this machine! Guest guest
I am catching up on vitamix emails. I use it as a treat if I complete an assignment for my online course I get to read some vitamix emails! Before I was just reading the vitamix emails and getting behind in my school work!!! LOL! I did not know it was bad to have spinach every day. It seems to be the only green I have liked in my smoothies. I tried romaine and did not like that. I have not tried the kale and collards that have been mentioned yet but think they would be strong tasting. I have finally come to enjoy the spinach and even have my daughter now getting her dad to buy it for her at his house. But she does not get it in a smoothie there but adds it to her salad or makes a salad with it. k... I guess I have to go shopping again and find some other greens. I am now craving something sweet, like a chocolate bar. But I am going to behave and go make some kind of VM icecream. but cannot decide if I want strawberry or try a chocolate, any suggestions? Guest guest
Oh that sounds good, I made strawberry and it was excellent but made me cold so I laid on the couch with a blanket in front of the tv and fell asleep. Woke up in middle of the night with a kink in my neck! I am taking a full time diploma course, Medical Office Administration through e-learning, so it is all online. A lot of the stuff I already took when I did my Vet technician course so thankfully it makes it easier than if I did not have that background but it is a lot of work. There is always something due and I am now finishing up 4 courses so even more things are due and then I will get 4 new ones. I am hoping to get a better job than I had as here vet technician's do not make much. Carolyn In a message dated 4/10/2011 12:32:58 A.M. LOL! K... going to write my quiz. Carolyn  In a message dated 4/11/2011 4:00:08 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, solomon@... writes:  Good for you on the Medical Office Admin courses! Always good to upgrade your education, I think. I had not idea vet techs were low pay. Maybe that is why my son's best friends spouse quit her job as a Vet Tech. I keep thinking about that Chocolate Covered Strawberry Ice Cream and how I can make it work. Maybe a base of yogurt and cocoa, with dates to sweeten, and strawberries to freeze it, then a few extra strawberries and maybe chocolate chips near the end and run on low speed to just grind a bit and mix in? But that would require the frozen part not be too frozen yet. So still thinking on that one. Guest guest
I did the quiz and got 98/100 mad because I got 2 wrong, and one was a typo error. Going back to school as an adult is so different than when you are young. I cared more about pub night than how high my mark was now. Now I could not handle pub night! Yes I would love to have a job with benefits. Vet Techs rarely get benefits! I am now thinking of blueberry ice cream with chocolate sauce. On the vitamix recipe site they show blueberry icecream with choc sauce on top. But there is no recipe for the chocolate sauce. Carolyn In a message dated 4/11/2011 4:37:09 A.M. A hospital job I think, in most cases, would not only pay better, but also have better benefits and perhaps job stability. Strawberrrrrrrrrrrrrry Chocolate...........still thinking. I decided on medical office admin. because it was somewhat related studies to what I already have. I just hope when I am done I can get a good job at the hospital.
