My medicines are:

Hyzar100-25,

clonidine 0.1,

Synthroid0.002

Lopressor 50mg

Aldactone25

It is both legs, but one is much worse. At first I thought it was

Shingles..then wondered how Shingles could be on both legs.

I do thank you for any insight.

HI Sheila

wow, about the edema legs, but also top of foot with Extreme itching/

clear " blister " ! i had that when i got really sick a couple of

summers ago;

i have longterm hypothryodi = hashimoto's autoimmine thyroid disease.

turns out i did NOt convert the standard thyroid hormone med

(synthroid) which contains only T4 thyroid hormone (vs T3, the Active

hormone) and i remained hypothyroid all the years i was on meds! (IE

i had a below NOrmal Free t3 )

--

anyway, having hypothryodi /low Free t3 (with a " Normal tsh " ) did not

help my adreanl glands ; because the adrenal and thyroid glands work

so synergistically :)

and after a lot of life/emotion stress -and the physical stress of

summer (no AC ) i got that blister and also a Ton of other symtpoms

that i had been living with became worse. ]

btw, the itching was incredibly fierce!!!!

(i had slightly high BP for years , but postural hypOtension

(lightheaded when standing up) got MUCH worse that summer.

~*~

my new MD (alternative MD who also knows accupuncture) had me do a

24hr cortisol saliva test. (and i Googled to learn more about the

symptoms! all of which i had lived with Since childhood!!)

i have High cortisol on 3 of the readings (they test 4 salivas per

day and one's cortisol Should be in a Diurnal pattern:

highest in morning and decrease by bedtime so you can fall asleep and

stay asleep :)

conventional medicine still hasn't learned much about this but a lot

of conventionally trained drs, who are now calling themselves

Alternative or holistic MDs , do use this test

(someone told me one part of medicare will pay for/uses it, But i

have not confirmed that myself!_)

can you do a 24hr cortisol SALIVA test?

*you can order a DiagnosTechs or ZRT labs, IF you live in any state

but NY or CA

(CA you need a dr on the order) but otherwise order yourself via

those sites or thru Canary club (an thyroid patient advocate website_)

--

basically to help Adrenal Fatigue:

eat a low glycemic, healthy, whole food diet and NO caffeines or

sugars (or basically any fun stuff ;)

and " stress management "

i also take Vit C now (not megadoses but 500mg in am and pm)

and a good quality* ALL-B vitamin.

--

turns out for anyone with " adrenal Fatigue " , diet and nutrition -and

glycemic control- is Extremely important to feeling better , and

helping the adrenals to heal.

the adrenals and cortisol help to control inflammation in the body,

and keep allergies " under control.

-Carol

BTW< i have swelling in my legs:

note that Hypothyrodism is known to cause " salt wasting "

but reading even further

you can find studies and different drs saying that ALL the

electrolytes can be affected in hypothryodi patients

--and adrenal fatigue patietns!

i actually use sea salt now (not a lot ) but it Seems to be helping

water go to the right places (

i also take magnesium and eat calcium/yogurt-plain

and TOns of salads for potassium.

I always assumed those talking about adrenal fatique were referring to

addinoneans which I thought is the oposite of PA. I recently looked into

the Chopra center since Dr. Chopra was actually an endo before he opened his

center for complete health and welness. My first question was if they had

ever dealth with PA patients and they said NO but they could get me started

on yoga and similar relaxation techniques for overall welness. So I didn't

bother. This was a big problem when I was first diagnosed trying to find a

decent doctor who knew what I had and how to treat my condition, many didn't

know what they were doing and were referring with confidence to lecture me

that my my condition in the medical terminology was called addisonean. A big

flag telling me to stay away from him/her.

There are many people on this list who report fatigue with PA. I am not

aware of spiro or Inspra causing fatigue.

Is PA and/or medical treatment for PA associated with any kind of

fatigue at all?

All of the salt we eat was sea salt at one time. It kills just as

well as " regular " salt.

Yes in all advanced cases due to low K with PA which almost always

has " high blood pressure " .

Adrenals not working well for cortisol would have low BP and tend to

have high K.

That was always my understanding too...That salt came from the

sea.Anyway,my goal is to stop all salt.I just can't do it cold turkey.

I think I would die from withdrawals.

Sheilah:

A good alternative to reducing salt to start out is add some balsamic

vinegar(about a teaspoon or so) and cayane pepper to your food. The spicy

taste of the pepper and vinegar is a good alternative to salt. In time you

will not need to vinegar or the pepper. My kids dont like to eat at

restaurants anymore because they say all they taste is salt and nothing

else. Once you get used to a low sodium diet, you appreciate the real taste

in food.

I thought that too, but I found out if you start cutting back, your taste

will change.

I did a diet that eliminated sodium accidentally largely replaced with

carbs. After 3 months my wife wanted to eat something else - she had lost 45

#. So we started steamed broccoli then added other veggies.

The outcome was that I could taste the potato flavor, the delicate flavors

in various veggies. Now if you put something like celery in the steamer it

will mask the others, so I leave those out. We use things like squash, red

bell pepper, red potatoes, carrots (take longer).

We also bake (microwave) potatoes, sweet pots, and cob corn.

It's the only way to regulate/control sodium.

It is not possible to eliminate all sodium in what you eat as long as

you eat. Your goal should be <1500 mg a day. Basically you want to

get it low enough that your BP is normal and you can stand that

sodium intake.

Some can and some can't (tolerate the change).

We really should be calling the " low sodium " diet that many are

eating here a " normal human sodium " diet based on what our

progenitors ate for millions of years. It is only in last 10,000

years or so that humans have over-salted and hypertension has become

the major killer of man kind (and woman kind) today.

I suggest we start calling the DASH diet a normal human salt diet and

the current high salt diet a toxic intake of salt causing salt

poisoning. Still need to recall that the 1,500 mg Na diet (DASH) is

about 5 times more than our ancestors consumed.

All of the salt we eat was sea salt at one time. It kills just as

well as " regular " salt.

My First Post

Hello to everyone. I have been reading all of the posts for awhile and have decided to tell my story. I am 51, female, and have had Harrington Rods since 1981. I also had a fusion to a portion of my back one week before the rods were put in. I was about 22 at that time. I was out of work 3 months, and have been working full-time and going to school ever since then. I had worn the Wilwaukee brace for several years in my teens. My doctor in Miami, FL, retired and my parents didn't follow up so I didn't know I needed surgery. At about 21 years old, my back just hurt all the time. I went to a local orthopedic surgeon (Milledgeville, GA) and was referred to Dr. Carl Fackler in Atlanta (Piedmont Hospital). The surgery left me "pitched forward", and Dr. Fackler insisted it was normal and nothing to worry about. As he said, "this isn't cosmetic surgery." I'll say. After reading all of your posts, I know I have been lucky. I am doing pretty well. I tell people it looks worse than it feels! I work full-time and have a very active life. I even compete in dog agility with my two dogs! The only time my back hurts is when I don't get enough sleep or when I do too much bending (yard work, car washing, etc.). I will say, though, that turning 50 has been tough! I am more achy and sluggish nowadays than I used to be. I hope my back will continue to be OK in the future. I haven't given much thought to having the rods removed for fear things could be a lot worse. I try not to think about it much, except when I feel sorry for myself and wish I was "normal." Thanks for listening.Carla in Athens, GA

Hi Carla, It's good to hear that you are feeling well!!! And you are

very active & I think that's good too.

But I was just wondering:

A nurse just wrote in to the question, did your operation affect your

financial situation. She wrote she had to quit taking care of

patients & go into administrative work and was sad about that.

Well, I remember talking to another nurse a long time ago who had

scoliosis surgery. She was angry because no one had told her she

should have taken it easy on herself or even get into another

profession. Lifting patients was hard on the back!

So what is the best answer here? Should the doctors tell their

patients the more they do, the sooner they will need another surgery?

Good question & I don't know the right answer to that one.

Hi there, I am also new to this group and just discovered the podcasts.

I also have the problem of being in a constant learning mode rather than a doing

mode. I usually avoid shows like biggest loser for just the reason you mention.

Its wonderful that they can take a vacation from life and simply go lose weight.

I can't. To me, its a bigger test and much bigger accomplishment to have be

able to lose weight with life happening all around me.

Today I will concentrate on more doing. We already know HOW to do it. Now lets

" Just DO it! "

Kate - I have the same problem. You've inspired me to be motivated today. It

will be very hard because people in my office (hopefully not me) are getting

laid off. Its been going on all week and we know today is the day for our

department.

Thanks for the motivation.

Hi ,

Seems we have the same problem. DOING! I know more about weight and

food and calories than a PhD. I am now working very hard on those

emotional issues. Very Hard. I have completely immersed myself in

trying to figure out my limiting beliefs cause I think they are what's

stopping me from DOING! God bless us though, we are persistant.

I watched that episode of Biggest Loser on my iPod yesterday too. I

actually feel sorry for them because the change is so radical that they

will have a hard time adjusting to life outside the ranch. They've gone

from two extremes and you can see the terror on their faces, not knowing

what moderation is. And they haven't had time to understand what drives

them to overeat. Notice that the focus of the show is primarily on

exercise, very little on eating and even less on any kind of therapy.

Yeah, I educated myself on the mechanics of weight loss for years and

years, but knowing how to do it and actually practicing it are two

different things. Since you're obviously a " reader " , have you read the

book, " The End of Overeating... " by Kessler. I just read it and

thought it was a really good book and the " science " in the book meshed

with 's approach. Whether this book will stop people from

overeating is questionable, but it was very interesting.
