Hi Everyone,

Somewhat on the same subject...I took my daughter to

the dentist today and was told that her frequent

fevers could hamper the development of her permenant

teeth - that they may be malformed. Has anyone had

this experience?

My oldest daughter has had a number of dental issues we think are related

to her high fevers () and/or the medications she was on as a premie. She

is 10 years old and has had at least 10 root canals and crowns. She has also

had to have two appliances to hold spaces due to teeth having to be pulled

prematurely. My kids don't eat candy or gum (not even sugar free). 's

front tooth came in with a hole in the center of it, we had to have it filled

when she was 18 months old. It was not related to sleeping with a bottle because

she never took a bottle, she was breastfed exclusively for the first year and

then food and sippy cups were added. She only had milk and water in her cup and

never took it to bed with her. She had a root canal and crown this past

Wednesday. We have over $10,000 in her baby teeth.

Dental issues

Hi Folks,

Has any one ever made a correlation between auto inflamatory disorders

like HIDs and TRAPS and dental issues?

I took Hana to the dentist yesterday with painful teeth, swollen gums

and a low grade fever. Sure enough she had 2 abcesses in teeth that

recently had fillings-very superficial ones.

Our dentist was floored and said he's never encountered such an over

reaction (the death of a tooth nerve and subsequent infection) due to

a minor filling. Maybe with a very deep filling close to the nerve,

but not such a minor thing.

He is a superb dentist who actually was familiar with HIDs when we

first met him 6 months ago. He actually is reasearching this issue

and said he would write up a case report on Hana's abcesses if he

thinks they are related at all to HIDs. (I wish our MD's were this

interested in HIDs!)

Any one ever see anything written on this subject or experienced

something similar?

I'm not talking the usual lots-of-cavities issues that so many

kids-with or without fevers seem to have in our sugar filled world,

but a blatant over reaction of the immune system on basic dental

procedures.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Holly,

Thanks for your reply. What a nightmare for ! I will pass your

message onto my dentist.

And you seem like a very disciplined person to not give in to candy or

gum or even juices ocassionally. I use the " I'm exhausted because my

kids are always fevering so i'm going to give them sweets to appease

them for a while " excuse too often.

I'll give it another try knowing that there is another Mom who

successfully sticks by the no candy rules! Thanks for the inspiration.

WOW! Disciplined is right!! Please be sure to document everything. Keeping

good records is key! So many of these PFS are yet to be diagnosed. All the

information you provide to the doctors can help with diagnosing these diseases.

Keep up the great work!!!

Hi, ...yes has been put out for a different reason...They keep them very relaxed...the minute they get back there they give the child something to relax. It's quick and easy, or at least it was for us...the only thing that got my was the band-aid they put on his arm afterwarsd, an Autism moment for sure lol ... as well as some normal crankiness we'd all have after sedation.

Hey everyone. My 10 year old is going to our local hospital next Friday to be put under and have a few cavitys filled and a good cleaning. Have any of you had to do this with your child? I am scared to let them just take him back. Will I be permitted to go with him while he is put to sleep? How have your children reacted when waking up? Thanks in advance for your help.

This is actually the only way my 4yo will get his teeth done. I chose to not go back to the room with them and instead used it to have a few peaceful moments. He was very relaxed when he woke up and was actually better rested that day.

Oh, ...I do understand. I have so much anxiety where is concerned -- the fact that our kids cannot converse is the hardest part for me... has words, but cannot communicate really.......I get it...hope it all goes well --- try to find comfort in the fact that once they have him in there...he will be relaxed --

Another thing I do is a picture story...forgot to mention that. I look up on-line for photos of dentists...or the office, etc...and I say, first dentist then home with a picture of our house of course at the end of the "story" --- this always helps .

Let us know how it goes.....

Hi Angie,

My son had the same procedure for his very first cleaning, xrays and sealents. We were there with him in the hospital room -they gave him something to make him sleepy and then they took him away. I got to be there in the recovery room before he woke up. He made it through just fine-a little disoriented but okay.

Hi ,

had the same thing done last year. I stated with him until they gave him a shot (he wouldn't drink the other stuff). It was hard since he was a little scared but it wasn't to bad. It also took a long time to wake up in recovery so I was a little worried. The medicine seemed to last a long time with and it took about 5 hours from waking up for him to be able to walk around and talk enough for us to go home. He wasn't upset or angry just very quiet and huggy. I am glad we had it done and I am really glad he got his molars coated. He cannot sit still for the dentist to give him a good cleaning so I think we will have to do something like this every couple of years. does brush well and he will even let me floss for him so hopefully no more cavities in the near future. Could you call your dentist and ask what usually happens so you know where you will leave him

and how long it usually takes etc..? Our dentist was very helpful. I hope it goes well, Kellie

When my dd was put to sleep for an MRI, I stayed with her until she was sleeping and was brought back in as soon as she was out of the MRI so that I would be there when she woke up.

Some of mine were put to sleep to have teeth pulled as preschoolers and I was there when they went to sleep and was there as they woke up. That was at a dentist office and the MRI was at a major medical center.

Ask. You probably will be allowed to be there.

I have also had problems with opening my jaw for many years. I have SMA II,

and about 10 years ago it got to the point where the dentist could not

work on my teeth and it was becoming difficult to even get food in my mouth.

Another dentist recommended a device called Therabite, which gradually

stretches the jaw over a period of time. He had never used it before on someone

with a neuromuscular disorder, but was willing to give it a try. After

using it diligently for about two months, my jaw opening about doubled in size.

While the dentist still has limited access to my teeth, it is much better

than before. I still use the device twice a day just to maintain the

opening that I gained. The Therabite website is at:

By the way, my doc is sending me out to an integrative dentist to see if I have

any dental problems that could be a chronic drain on my immune system. How do

these devices stand up against those types of issues? I have 2 or 3 amalgam

fillings. No root canals. No pain. Just chasing loose threads.

Xylitol and soda are good for tooth infections. Kills bacteria that form plaque

that causes gingivitis (separation of the gums from the root). Also, godzilla

between the gums and teeth on both sides of your mouth, or sponges on both

cheeks, will kill it fast. But it will come back, just like it will with

antibiotics. Sometimes the only way to cure tooth and jawbone infections is

extractions.

1/2 inch thick, Ocello sponges are the kind I use. Buy at any grocer or Target.

Don't get the ones with scrubbers on one side. Wet with warm water and squeeze

them out against the wash bowl so they don't drip.

do these devices stand up against those types of issues? I have 2 or 3 amalgam

fillings. No root canals. No pain. Just chasing loose threads.

I don't know about that. I've used the Godzilla very successfully for

tooth and root infections and they have not come back. So long as you

repeat your sessions one or two more times after the original one I have

never had a relapse.
