If I am in there buying a meter and it's just one, I will open the package and

set the meter to test continuity. -->| symbol on the dial. I touch the two

probes together and it should go to zero. If it does, or almost to zero, then

meter is good. I have found sometimes need to test one or two to be sure you

get a good one. Otherwise just buy 2 and one will work, the other can be

returned.

the thing you want is called a " milliameter " or " multimeter " . they are for sale

at most hardware stores, Lowe's Home depot, or auto stores, etc. They come in

various prices but the cheapest ones will work just as well.
