going to the hospital

Hello ers,

Someone recently asked about going to the hospital as this was a first

for them. While reading " How to Survive in Today's Medical System - The

Patients' Book " , I came across a very good section on this topic

(remember I am in the U.S. so this is about that).

Subjects about going to the hospital include:

1) preparing for the hospital (includes talking with the surgeon AND

anesthesiologist

2) choosing the hospital

3) What hospitals are like

4) what you will need and what you won't

5) about your room

6) surgery, intensive care,

7) taking care of yourself-making notes, bathing, questioning Drs,

keeping your wits, 8) going home

Plus more! This has much too much more info to go into here.

I DO recommend this book for the above, butt mainly because of the

advocacy and self care it teaches (the authors both have chronic kidney

illness). I learned a lot about how they live and some things I can use

in my own life. Well worth $12.00 and a few night's reading. Available

from http://www.amazon.com

I am going to contact the authors and inquire about reprints on the

'hospital stay' section. They are connected with Colorado HealthNet

http://www.coloradohealthnet.org

I also asked if some CMT info. could be listed, as other illnesses are,

as all I could find was one year old forum post with incorrect

information!

Subject: Going to the Hospital

well,

we've made the decision to go to the hospital tonight. It isn't what

anyone wanted to do but my body is overtired and needs IV antibiotics.

I'm being admitted to Nationwide Children's Hospital in

Columbus Ohio. I don't know what floor I'll be on or for how long.

We'll try to keep everyone updated...If possible, please don't

call us (we are taking both cells and my laptop) until we are settled

in. Please continue your good thoughts and prayers.

Hope all goes well, MJ. I just started my own course of IV antibiotics on

Friday. Not fun. Don't let them stab you too much.
