Guest guest
, Did your Dr. actually write out a prescription on his pad for your AFOs? This is what my Dr. did for my orthotics, and insurance finally DID pay their share, but first, I paid my orthotist in full as he wanted. Later I was reimbursed by the insurance co. Might be a good idea to look into your local MDA office - they DO help with the cost of AFOs, to what extent, it seems to vary, as we have had conflicting reports here at the group. To find your nearest MDA office, go to http://www.mdausa.org and where it says 'find clinic' click on that and enter your zip code. And you know what, I would also try to fight your insurance company on this - get it in writing from your Doctor that AFOs are now required for you. Also ask your Dr. what his other patients do in this situation. Also, maybe you could work out some sort of payment schedule for your co-pay part. Ask your insurance co WHY they won't cover this 'medical necessity' too. A while back http://www.cmt-bracing.net was offering a free deal for teens who need AFOs. Theirs are quite unique I am told. Also you might inquire if your local Easter Seals might help you with your AFOs. I have just learned they are helping more CMT people than before. DO check around AND get your doctor's orders in writing in the form of a prescription. Also whatever out of YOUR pocket exxpenses you have to pay can be taken as medical deduction off your taxes. ~ Gretchen Weenerwil@... wrote: >My doctor refered me to get A F O s.well my insurance > company is not going to pay for them because of the coverage that I have.I > was wondering if there is any way to fight this ?I also want to know if there > is any orthotic company out there that helps people in my situation or that > isnt as fortunate to have insurance at all. Guest guest
......I second what Gretchen and others said. The AFO's are a 'medically necessary' treatment for CMT; they are not for comfort. Do you know if your insurance covers 'durable medical equipment'? A prescription is absolute. And just so you know, my orthotics company did set me up on a monthly payment plan for my deductible, but you have to ask for it. MDA and Easter Seals are great suggestions for help.
