Weldon,

Welcome to . I can only speak from my personal experience. I am now

42 years old, but at age 41 I had both of my feet operated on. The

orthopedic surgeon cut/released my Achilles tendons. He made very small

cuts (more of a knick) on the back side of my heel area. He also lowered my

arches, broke the bone to my big toe and pulled the front of my foot up and

place a screw in it until it healed. I was in several casts and non-weight

bearing for eight weeks. I used a walker and hopped behind it, and also

used a wheelchair. I had my left foot operated on Nov. 7, 2000 and my right

foot operated on Feb. 13, 2001. I am very pleased with the outcome. I do

some stretching exercises to keep the tendon stretch out.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. Good luck.

Texas

Subject: [] CMT and foot surgery.

> Hello everyone. My 9yr. old son has a great probability of having CMT. He

was a toe walker as an infant. With persistance, he was seen by an

ortopedic and a neurologist at age 4. He was then referred to Shiriners.

It was discovered that his achilles tendons were tight, he then wore AFOs

for three years with some improvement. For the past year he has not worn

them to see if any changes developed in his feet. Shiners now wants to do

surgery due to increased muscle weakness and tightened achilles tendons.

The procedure is called plantar facia release and interior transfer of the

posterior tibial tendon. Also Duke University in NC will be testing him for

CMT. Has anyone themselves or their children had this done? If so, how has

it helped ,or were there any major complications caused?
