Guest guest
Hi Kara, it's Judy g. I am a severe 'sloucher' too. Because I slouch over I must 'crane' my neck upwards to see - this throws your whole upper body out of whack. I am in a wheelchair and that made it worse, because I was sitting and hunched over, cutting off my digestive system, NOT GOOD , so we came up with a solution, that may help you too. The back of my wheelchair reclines a bit and they have added a head rest. So you need to find a way to sit wherein you are slightly recumbent. In other word, if your back muscles can hold you up, then sit in a position in which your body is straight -by leaning back and being able to rest your head and neck - You know, your head weighs A LOT, not just yours, sorry , everybodys does - so it is similar to hyperextending your knees. which throws your whole body out of whack TO COMPENSATE. I would also go to PT and ask if there are any excercises you can do to straighthen your upper torso. Your shoulders are probably 'rounded inward, correct? That can't be fixed, really, short of surgery. Also they make a simply soft brace that criss-crosses over your shoulders and pulls them back a bit straighter and you can HIDE it under your clothes and it is very soft, not made of plastic. Additionally, for you NOT to get 'tired or fatigued' in you neck and back, you need to build up some strength. So add on a visit to Orthodics as wellmas to Physical Therapy. I would probably recommend the Orthodics at your MDA clinic, because they are extremely familiar with this problem - because a LARGE number of people who have anyone of the 43 neuromuscular diseases, experience this problem. One last thought, if you are have difficulty getting comfortable at night when you go to bed or wake up with pain, try laying on your back, but build up a stack of soft pilllow. Then you can sleep in this comfortable, recumbent position. Your legs would be straight (you can also put a pillow under your knees to take pressure off your lower back) then at the waist you would be reclining on an angle that is much more comfortable. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Peace & Love Judy g. Guest guest
Thanks Judy! I did go to a PT for my shoulders and back. She even came to my work and looked at the way I was sitting at my desk. I am on the phone alot and told me to get a head set for my phone and new chair that has a lumbar support. I STILL sloutch. I can not help it. I hurst to sit up straight. Where can you get a shoulder brace? Do you have to go to a doctor to get one fitted? I have not been to a doctor about my CMT. It is not bad enough (I think) to warrant letting them (insurance) know that I have this. My daughter goes to ish Rite in Dallas. The info I get on CMT is through this site and others and her Doctor. My aunts doctor also gives her good advise that she passes on to me. If it were not for the group I do not know what I would do. It has helped me mentally sooooo much. I have hyperextented knees as well and with CMT and back problems I am a walking mess. I am 6 ft. tall and a little over weight so the weight does not help me either. I am trying to get it off. I am now working out with our Boflex system but can not lift alot of weight. I am also scared that if I lift alot of weight I will make my muscles worse. Thanks for your time. I know you are all so busy. Kara ----- Original Message ----- From: Judy Piersol Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 11:00 AM Subject: Re: [] Shoulders Hurting Hi Kara, it's Judy g. Guest guest
Kate, By slouching for so many years your deltoids, (shoulder muscles) have probably atrophied. When you sit up straight the muscles are being stretched and worked, this is probably why they hurt. I would seek the advice of an orthopedic specialist. It sounds like an MRI of your entire back and spine is needed. A good stretching regimen will probably help as well. I have had cortisone shots in my knee and ankle, about 20 seconds after the injection, the affected area feels like it is being boiled from the inside out and I begin to sweat like I was halfway through a marathon. Once this initial reaction by my body is over the affected area begins to feel much better. The positive effect from the cortisone shot usually lasts 2 or 3 weeks with me so the initial 2 hours of hell is worth it. Cortisone shots are not for every one, as nasty side effects can ensue for some. If your regular doctor can not seem to help, talk with another doctor. Good luck. Guest guest
Sorry Kara, I think I adressed you as Kate in my previous post, I really should find my glasses. Good for you on the Bowflex, remember, you do not need to lift a lot of weight, just the fact that you are working the muscles and stretching them is a good thing. Keep at it, don't over do it and you will see a change, it takes some time. Guest guest
Bill, Thanks for the input. I am not sure if I should go to the doctor about this or if I do go to my orthopedic doctor not saying anything about my CMT. I have lived with this pain for about 7 years. It is getting worse though. I am scared that my insurance will sky rocket. I know that that is not a good excuse not to see a doctor but I am on a limited budget. Guest guest
Bill, No I have not been diagnosed with CMT but the doctor told me that I would have to have it to pass it on to my daughter have she has been diagnosed. My two aunts have it, my dad, his dad, his uncles and my great grandfather as well had it. I know that my heath is a big factor but there is really nothing that can be done for CMT so I am still putting it off and seeking the advise of others that do have it as well as my daughters doctor. I know insurance is a big concern for all of us but your health is the biggest concern of all. See the doctor.
