Guest guest
I have been diagnosed with CMT. Initially the doc said type 2, but after hearing a bit more about my family, he thinks it could be type 1x. I am female and have only mild symptoms. My mom has it too -- similar but more progressed than mine. Also two half brothers with it. My oldest half brother has more prominent symptoms and has since childhood. I may get the DNA test that is available for 1x--no rush- doesn't change anything. The doc said that there is a high occurence of 1x in Virginia, particularly in the Blue Ridge area, which is where my mom was born and raised. I guess this on the lighter, more trivial side, but do any of you have straight thumbs? My thumbs and my mother's thumbs look more like fingers, I guess, in that they don't have that backward bend that everyone else's does. Sounds strange, I know---Anyone else? Guest guest
The " straight thumbs " reminded me of a note on one of my father's diagnosis papers. It reported that the women carriers could not stand or walk on their heels or snap their finders (you know like calling attention to someone or saying " oh WoW " ) I never have been able to do any of those things or wiggle anything other than my great toe independently as I have seen others doing. In fact my brother can put a bruise on someone by pinching them with his toes. ( I guess that rules him out as a candidate for CMT) This was written about 1965 or so, and another reason I believed I was only a carrier. My symptoms were so mild that no one ever suspected I might have CMT let alone me until this past couple of months. In the last two months my thumb and forefinger has lost mobility. The only pain associated with it now is when I am forced to move it or hold something that I need to grip. The numbness, tingly feeling are still with me along with the Coldness.
