weight loss surgery and back pain

Just thought I would check to see if anybody else in the group has the

same problem as I-this is kind of different, but pertains to back pain-

anyways, about 5 years ago I had a gastric bypass and lost 150 pounds.

After I lost the weight, I started my problems with my back, had lumbar

fusion and cervical fusion, but still have lots of pain. Because I'm no

spring chicken, and was left with a lot of skin sagging after the

weight loss that could not be exercised away, I was researching surgery

to have the excess skin removed, and found out that the excess skin can

and does cause back problems. I still have a lot to research, but that

really floored me, as none of my drs. have ever mentioned this. Has

anyone ever heard about the weight of excess skin left after actual

weight loss causing back problems? I still have to look into getting

approvals, I have been given the name of a surgeon who deals in the

type of surgery I would need, but I don't have the money for it to be

done for cosmetic reasons, it has to go through my insurance so i can

have it done for medical purposes. Any help would be appreciated-thanks!

if you can have your referring doctor submit a really good h & p for the

certification I cant imagine your insurance denying you unless they just dont

have that kind of coverage.

Most do though.

If you are having chronic pain (as your back surgeries indicate) that in itself

is a very strong reason for the surgery.

You just need to have your GP and your surgeon on board to get this through the

insurance certification and appeal it if they have to in case its denied.

good luck.

,

What is a h & p?

I have a supplemental medicare plan. I guess the first thing I need to do is

visit the surgeon to see if he even accepts my insurance, and go from there. I

have about 10 pounds of loose skin that could be removed. You can't tell when

I'm dressed, especially wearing jeans, but I can't even exercise with the skin

bouncing around.

Thank you

sorry- history and physical.

Have your General Partitioners write a synopsis of your situation, you can take

it to your surgeon who will likely need to get your surgery pre certified- and

to do that they will need a history and physical to see if you meet criteria.

The Surgeon's office knows this and if denied they can appeal it as well.

Medicare most likely will not cover this surgery as far as I know.

The Surgeons office should have someone that deals directly with insurance and

should know what to submit and if you need additional information.

You sound like a good candidate to me.

best of luck.
