Guest guest
Hi , It's so nice of you to stop in to ask how we are, I'm not complaining too much, my spine has been as quiet as it can get for the last few days. Since I'm grateful for not having more pain and have learned not to push too far, my hope is that I'll be no worse for awhile. The weather is teasing us with a couple of wonderful days but tomorrow here comes the heat and humidity again. I get so grouchy when I'm overheated and hate the noise of the air conditioner and fans. Maybe someday we can afford central air. I don't know about you, but we are scraping by barely paying the necessary bills. It's off to the food pantry tomorrow for me. Who would have thought we would ever be that bad off again? Guest guest
Annie, I'm so very sorry to hear you have suffered so much. Hopefully the pain clinic will find ways to give you relief. Do you know what the cause of the pain is? All that driving and walking stairs is aggravating those nerves, no doubt. I can imagine. Guest guest
Hey Jennette! its getting bad isnt it! we have to install a new chimney to get home owners. Cost a fortune. Then everything is going up! and up and up. We have no food in the house. its al going to companies and the gas tank! I'm furious! then dave got a new pair of eyeglasses, he cant see out of THREE pairs! he's been back 3 times, and they are so off. We are out that money! then i went for a few tests, and the darn doctor talked me into a pap. She said 38 dollars, but it ended up being about 200. so the entire thing ended up costing 400. I cant pay it! cindy > > Hi , It's so nice of you to stop in to ask how we are, I'm not complaining > too much, my spine has been as quiet as it can get for the last few days. On top of back pain I've now got Tennis Elbow. I thought that was a disease of the rich and famous. Not so, and it is very painful. So no more drumming, and painful use of computer. I'm supposed to have it in a sling for 2 months. I need to find a cool (temperature wise) sling. My M-I-L gave me a sling but it's made of foam and it's hot and itchy. Plus having a bad shoulder and neck it's no fun having a sling on either. Good news is wife gave in and gave me a middle age crazy gift. a 96 SVT COBRA Mustang, Bad news is I can't wash and wax it. Reminds me of the line in 's Moving Out song. " If you can't drive with a broken back, at least you polish the fender " But I can't even do that now. So Wife is enjoying " my car " She fought it, and now she loves it. I maxed out my dosages of Hydrocodone so Doctor pull back on Hydro (Vicoden) and upped my Oxycontin. So I've moved one step closer to the max pain relief stage at age 50. Hate to think where I'll be if I ever hit 70. My main arm, left is the tennis elbow so now I'm trying to do everything one armed and with my right. So now my right shoulder which has always been my pain shoulder hurts more. So I guess the morale is wherever your at pain wise maybe be glad for it, because it can get worse. Dave
Guest guest
I finally got the doc to do shoulder surgery in January. He didn't think there would be anything to fix to help. Well, he was WRONG! Go figure. I had a partially torn rotator cuff which he smoothed out, labral tear (he definitely didn't think that had happened) which he repaired, a very large bone spur and some arthritis in the AC joint so he removed the AC joint, and bursitis which he removed the bursa sac. But, really, there wasn't anything bad in there. YIKES. WHEN will they start to LISTEN to their patients? Loooong rehab and I still have a sore shoulder at times but its TONS better! I finally have full ROM and my PT says I have a near normal shoulder! YAY! That resulted in less neck pain but its not gone and I still get terrible headaches. So, some of the neck pain was definitely due to the shoulder injury. They out and out refuse to do anything other than PT, traction, and meds for my neck. Problem is.now I can't take Advil AND Tylenol. So..any suggestions on what to take if I get a terrible headache (which happens a few times per week)? Guest guest
Joi, Joi, Sorry, I meant to ask where your head pain is. Is it back of head like in occipital pain, or at the sides or front of your head? There's different kinds of headaches--differing locations, different severities, intervals and durations, different accompanying symptoms. The pain doctor I went to specialized in head pain and had varieties of treatments depending on which kind. Rochelle > > I finally got the doc to do shoulder surgery in January. Guest guest
Hi, I had my surgery on my neck last October.  It was successful, but had other problems from the surgery that have finally been resolved.  Here, 9 months post-op and I am starting to have some discomfort in my neck again.  I also have carpal tunnel in both arms, so according to a couple of docs is my problem now.  I am trying different things like a different type of pillow, which has helped some.  I may go back to the neck doc, or I may try the acupuncturist first, haven't decided. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, I know I harp on posture too much, but if you go back to physical therapy, try to have your doctor write the prescription so they also evaluate your posture, especially strength of stabilizing shoulder girdle muscles and, orientation of shoulder blades--should not be farther apart than 4 inches and not riding up too high, also upper back strength and degree of thoracic curve to see if too kyphotic. There are various musculo-skeletal disorders that cause neck pain but are not directly related to nerve root impingement in the neck. Part of the treatment successes of a well known professor of physical therapy in Australia (Gwendoen Jull)are due to emphasis on posture and then neck flexor strength (the muscles you use to lift the head, when you are flat on your back.) I have moderate to severe degenerative disc disease in my neck, and my neck pain stemmed mainly from poor posture. However, I do realize not everyone is that way, but it doesn't hurt to get other causes checked out. Did your carpel tunnel syndrome just start? There is another similar syndrome called thoracic outlet syndrome: From PubMed: Thoracic outlet syndrome Last reviewed: November 1, 2010. Thoracic outlet syndrome is a rare condition (not so rare) that involves pain in the neck and shoulder, numbness and tingling of the fingers, and a weak grip. The thoracic outlet is the area between the rib cage and collar bone. (Waking up at night with numb hands is common with this disorder especially in middle-aged women. That's what was happening to me.) For more see the pubmed health article. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002406/ Physical Therapy for posture and shoulder strength is the first treatment. Guest guest
Rochelle, The first time I went to PT they helped me and it was a year before the pain came back. Then I went back to the same PT center and I will l never go back to PT for my neck again.  That PT session is why I had to have surgery so soon, they actually made things a lot worse and I was forced to have surgery within weeks because of it.  And this was a hospital based PT center too.  We have had this conversation before, and I agree posture does play a part.  In fact I told you about the little trick of turning your thumbs out and that will roll your shoulders back.  Right now I am in the middle of re-adjusting my sleeping habits.  I sleep with a CPAP mask.  My old mask was very hard and positioned your head and neck in place and I was waking up with an achy neck.  I am now transitioning to another mask that allows me to move.  I am also working with my pillows because I have noticed when I sleep on too hard or too many pillows it also plays havoc with my neck.  My neck has become less achy with these adjustments, so I will see what time brings, it may mean I have to adjust something else. I have actually had carpal tunnel for over 20 years.  I have been to several docs here all agreeing that I need the surgery in both wrists and additional surgery at one of my elbows for a nerve there.  Cannot think of the name of it off hand.  I just haven't decided who to do the surgery or when.  Thanks for asking. Guest guest
Debbie, It's shocking that Physical Therapy could mess you up so bad you needed surgery within weeks. Do you mind telling me what they exactly did? And the difference between the good PT before and the bad PT a year later. Was it the same physical therapist? Guest guest
Rochelle, No it wasn't the same therapist, but it was the same facility.  She was suppose to be one of the best, but soon after I went there the pain continued to increase to the point I could no longer stand it.  My chiropractor thinks that she didn't cool my muscles down after heating them.  I don't know what she did, but I won't go back for that again.  Debbie From: Rochelle <rccoc1977@...> Subject: Re: HEY??? fellow pains in the necks? how are you all feeling? neck pain Date: Saturday, July 30, 2011, 5:17 PM  Debbie, It's shocking that Physical Therapy could mess you up so bad you needed surgery within weeks. Guest guest
 Hi - I am 2 1/2 years post cervical fusion C4-7 and most of the problems from before the surgery were corrected by the surgery and are still gone...I am starting to get some tingling in my fingers, some weakness in my hand again, and neck pain again so I fear the disks above and below are starting to act up now - but it does seem to come and go at this point so I am going to be positive thinking on this one and hopeful. I also had Lumbar decompression about 9 months ago and that has been great! Unfortunately I need a knee replacement and hip replacement so that is precedent right now...UGH. Thanks for asking... bionic mark From: and Dave <woody1014@...> Subject: HEY??? fellow pains in the necks? how are you all feeling? neck pain Date: Thursday, July 14, 2011, 2:10 PM  Hey how is everone feeling and making out these days? i am no better? how are you all doing? cindy
Guest guest
Hi Mark, I'm interested in the lumbar decompression for my my sister, who has a tear in a lumbar disc and in a vertebra above that, an area of nerve root impingement that has caused a persistent spasm of a front thigh muscle. Could you describe how the decompression is done and how long it takes for relief. I've seen ads for lumbar decompression but never believed it worked, but if it worked for you maybe it would help my sister. Guest guest
Hi Rochelle - My surgery was last September.  During the laminectomy (decompression) essentially the surgeon removes the spinous process or the ridge down the middle of  your spine to relieve spinal stenosis.  I had stenosis that was as small as 4 mm when 12-13mm was normal.  This relieves the pinching of the spinal column.  It leaves the sides of the spine in space so there is no loss of structure.  They leave the spine open, but there is a thick layer of tissue over the spine.  I also had a foraminectomy which means they removed the back part of the spines on the side of the spine where the nerve roots exit the spine because I had pinched nerves there.  I had it on L2-S1.  I was out of work for 6-8 weeks but really could have gone back sooner probably.  I had immediate relief from sciatica.  It does not relieve lower back pain, I should have also had a fusion of the same vertebrate but I have such severe DDD that there were no healthy disks to start fusing.  The surgeon said that if he started it anywhere it would not be long before the disks above would then start to be a problem and need additional fusion.  So I have some remaining lower back pain but it so much better than when I had sciatica!  From my experience it was a miracle!! Please ask anything about it you want. Guest guest
HI Rochelle. I am in a brutal pain pattern having had a Cardiac Cath in early May and the artery was compromised-- and it is painful now, inner groin pain-- Dr at the pain clinic checked it out and he said tat is the issue. Then too i am getting in injection in my SI joint-- sacrual illeac joint August 15-- right hip is bad with arthritic. I am about 80 pounds overweight too. After 4 yrs of taking steriods. I am taking pain pills and prednisone for my PMR. Fibro is on board too but cant take Lyrica, or neurotyn, etc. Annie A poet is, most of all , to see From: Rochelle <rccoc1977@...> neck pain Sent: Thursday, August 4, 2011 8:16 PM Subject: Re: HEY??? fellow pains in the necks? how are you all feeling? Guest guest
Dear Mark, I thought your decompression was non-surgical. (But with such extensive stenosis, one area of spinal canal at 4 mm !!, non-surgical treatment wouldn't have helped. You must have been in a lot of pain!!) There are machines out there advertised as decompressing the spine that I guess " stretch " or put the spine under traction, and the discs somehow are supposed to repair themselves? I was hoping maybe these machines actually worked, though I doubt they do anything, but I was hoping. My sister is looking for a nonsurgical alternative. She already had one epidural that didn't help and has 2 more to go before her spine surgeon talks to her about surgery. But at this point, her thigh muscle never relaxes and it is a constant source of pain for the past 6 months. I'm worried the motor nerve will be so damaged by the time she has surgery that it won't all come back, especially if she goes looking for alternatives that don't work. She limps as it is. I'm so glad you got through such extensive spine surgery and had a successful outcome as well as relief of your sciatic nerve pain. Was the laminectomy done from L2-S1 like the formaminectomy? If you'd had fusions done, would it have been almost your entire lower back, L2-Si? That's at least 4 fusions and your lower back would be totally stiff.(Actually you probably could have been fused because they take the bad discs out and replace with your own bone or cadaver bone. But no one has enough extra bone for 4 large fusions like that. Would have been horrendous.) Do you have flexibility with the laminectomy? How long did the surgery take? Laminectomy and foraminectomy? My sister doesn't have as severe of problem, in that there's only 2 really bad levels (L3-4, L4-5, as far as I know) although she has a fair degree of DDD in all her lumbar discs and also her neck like I do. Guest guest
Dear Ann, Has it already been 4 years with the steroids? I remember when you first started with that " overdose " one doctor prescribed. My sister was also prescribed a large dose of steroids for her back pain, but I told her what happened to you. She's had some mental health issues (PTSD also plus other stuff) and when I told her about your reaction, she decided to tell her psychiatrist, who said no way should she take that much steroid. She went to another doctor and started with the epidurals. Too bad the first epidural didn't help at all. Ann, did you have a lot of bruising from the Cath? Pain from early May! They must have done a lousy job. The inner thigh/groin is such a sensitive area to begin with. Does the area spasm? Is there a lump where they put the catheter? My sister's pain doctor gave her a prescription for Lyrica. He says her widespread pain is probably fibromyalgia. My sister has to check that med out with her psychiatrist too. She's on psychoactive ones that may preclude it. Does the SI joint cause problems with the hip? or is the arthritic hip causing problems in the SI joint? Do they give steroid injections in the hip? The body is wonderfully clever in all it's interconnections, but once one thing goes wrong, watch out.
