Guest guest
The coffee (and tea) is a no-no due to the tannic acid involved in both (can be harmful to the lining of the stomach). To my knowledge it will not effect your weight loss - just could cause problems with your stomach. in GA > Coffee > > > Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me why we aren't allowed to > drink coffee? Guest guest
Kirsten- Dr. Rutledge does not want us consuming things that have no nutritional value. He wants us to drink liquids that contain vitamins and electrolytes and things that will enhance our health. Coffee does none of those things. Gatorade, V8 juice, orange juice, apple juice, tomato juice help us nutritionally. I love orange juice and I read on the label that one 14 oz serving contains 780 mg of potassium. Also, caffeine will leach the iron from your system. All weight loss surgery patients are at a much higher risk of anemia. It may not show up right away, but when it does it will take much longer to get your iron back up to normal. This happened to me and it took a good 6 months for me to get my iron back up to normal. and Kathy both can tell you a whole lot more about low iron. It is not a fun thing to go through. Third, we have to be careful with our stomach lining. Ulcers pose a higher risk for us. Coffee and tea are hard on the stomach lining. Drinking these may not slow down your weight loss, but they will affect you in other ways. Remember when we all said, " I would do ANYTHING to lose weight " ??? Well, giving up coffee, soda and tea are part of that " anything " . Margaret in St. Louis > Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me why we aren't allowed to drink coffee? Guest guest
Hi Jeannie---don't be paranoid! :-) The coffee should go right through the band into your lower stomach and not cause you any problems. (someone is sure to add " as long as you're not putting sugar and/or cream in it " so I'll save them the trouble!) In fact, black coffee is explicitly listed in the Inamed patient guide as OK. (If you don't have the guide, you can read it here: http://www.inamed.com/pdf/health/94829F_LB_Patient_Book.pdf) Good luck! > I gave up caffeine about 6 months pre-op and since surgery said good > bye to my Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi habit and no longer have Champagne > as my cocktail of choice. Guest guest
Jeannie, A lot of us have chosen to avoid all gastric irritants - and coffee is certainly one of them. When banded, all fluids concentrate to go through the tiny stoma area (the size of a pea), it's not as if they are dropping into a large stomach anymore. There are acids even in decaf. Most stomach ulcers and cancers are in the very lower part of the stomach, where all the food and fluid touch as they go through. This is the same as with the stoma - all things go through and touch this very small area. With stomach disease (ulcers, gastritis, reflux, etc) the first thing the GI docs want you to stop is coffee. But this is something you'll have to weigh and decide yourself. I couldn't imagine that a cup of coffee a day, especially if milk is added to " buffer " it, would cause harm - but the potential *IS* there. To me, it is much more important to avoid barfing and tight fills to avoid band problems. Guest guest
The surface area of our new tummy is so small that we really need to be careful with the things that cause normal people with a normal stomache surface area to get ulcers absorbing things that are harmful such as tannic acid and phosforic acid from sodas and nitrates, is never going to be good for our little tummies! Very dangerous! I personally plan to follow these recommendations for life. in Fla
Guest guest
Tannic acid in the coffee is what to avoid .. and it is not for one year it is a lifelong recommendation by Dr. R. Tannic acid can cause ulcers. The same with tea except we are now allowed green tea. in GA > > Hi all, > > Now that I am almost 5-1/2 years out, I have a silly question to ask. Guest guest
Joe, Many things change after banding, and especially with the pressure of fills. Some people can have a bit of coffee with no trouble, others cannot. And some think they are having no trouble untul they DO have trouble, and an endoscopy shows they have had a lowgrade chronic gastritis for some time. Outward symptoms (or lack of) are not always reliavble, since coffee is a known gastric irritant. SAdly, somne of the decaf kinbds are even more irritating than thre caffeinated, becuase of all thre chemicals used to de-caffeinate. My GI doc allows no coffee with his banded clients, becuase he has seen to many easily-avoidable problems. But some do fine. Just something to keep in mind - Sandy R > Good Morning: > > I read this board every morning it keeps me in check. Guest guest
Hi Bernice, Yeah!! on the 11 lbs. lost!!! I personally drink about 2 cups of coffee in the a.m. I don't have anymore than that, so far no problems. I think pouch inflamation is caused by overeating or eating food that irratates their stoma.(spicy, acidic foods)or from folks that pb and don't go on liquids for awhile to give your esophagus time to heal from the pbing. Just my opinion. Don't know for sure~Please someone correct me if I am wrong! Hope this helps. Guest guest
//Is it ok that I am drinking 1-2 cups of coffee in the morn?//The unoffical stand of Dr. A's office is that it's OK to have coffee. If I remember correctly from January, Yoland said Dr. A says no coffee during the clear liquids phase but after that, it's OK. She said the paperwork says no, but that Dr. A has said it's usually OK.Hope that helps Cyrena www.mylapbandjourney.com(240) 230/193/150 - 1/2 way there!!! Guest guest
I also drink 1-2 cups of coffee but at first I coulodn't even think about coffee. It didn't appeal to me at all. My fill Dr. said I could have coffee as long as I didn't put anything in it. (too many calories, he said). I am one who had an " inflamed " pouch. Actually, Dr. Campos said it was " distorted " which I think he might have meant distended. Anyway it was big due to the fact that the band was so tight that NOTHING could go down through it so it was all in my pouch and esophagus. Even a tiny sip of water could not go down so it was all there! I think it closed because it was irritated from being too tight. As soon as Dr. Campos removed .6 cc of saline everything went down but he wanted me to stay on liquids for 10 days to let everything go back to normal. I guess it did because I am fine now except I have little to no restriction. Time for a small fill I guess! Best wishes on your new journey!
