Guest guest
Kitti, I have a feeling we are at the same place. I had steroid shots on Monday, two in my left shoulder, and one in the right. My doctor told me that the pain couldn't be completely put down because of my Harrington rods and the way I must move about. I am fused from T6 to L5, and that was done in 1992. I still have severe curves anyway and a neck that I would give away if I could. I was told that Valium would be the only help. Has anyone told you that? Guest guest
Thank you so much for sharing your situation with me. It really helps me to feel like I am not the only one that has had these sorts of problems. I had no idea that I could have these complications after my surgery, and in fact, I really had to be persistant with my Dr before he even ordered an MRI of my neck. I wouldn't consider another surgery but the pain and numbness in my arms and hands keeps increasing. I have a ct scan with contrast next tuesday so I guess that we will take it from there. Thanks for the encouragment. Kitti mary wagner <mscello@...> wrote: Kitti, I had Harrington Rod surgery in 81,83 and then a fusion from L5/S1 in 1988. Last year my neck started hurting and I had an MRI and found out I had cervical stenosis with spinal cord compression. I tried PT but because of the cord compression there could be no manipulation. The cord was being compressed by bone spurs. (over 5 discs). I went to 3 orthopedic doctors including one scoliosis specialist and one neuro. All of the orthopods told me that if I slipped on ice or was rear-ended that I could become a quad. My pain was not that bad but hands were always falling asleep and I failed all the reflex and other manual tests. I was also getting a tight gait at night. So - I had a laminectomy in June. He did not fuse it because it was stable. the laminectomy covered C2-C6. It was a tough recovery for about 8 weeks - but I have no pain. He said it could take up to a year for the numbness to go completely away and it has. It was a good decision for me. If your cord is not compressed you may be able to do some light manipulation. I am wary about that with so much fusion. Good luck!

Guest guest
Hi Jackie, Stenosis is where you have a disk in your spine that is srinking. As the disk srinks or collapses it allows the vertebrae to move closer together pinching a nerve. Cervical is the part of the spine located in the neck. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi Bobby. I had surgery for this about 10 wks ago. YES. That was what caused me to go to the doctor! The headaches and dizziness. It was horrible. The headaches would be so bad at times that all I could do was go crawl in bed and hope that it would be gone when I woke up. I had cervical stenosis with mylapathy due to two cervical discs. Those two discs have now been fused. (hopefuly).. Guest guest
Hi Liz, Please tell me you are getting better! Are the headaches and dizziness still there? I'm still trying to avoid surgery, but I do not know how long I can avoid it. I have a degenerative spine and I hear that this condition makes surgery more difficult. Do you have any info on it? > > Hi Bobby. > I had surgery for this about 10 wks ago. > YES. That was what caused me to go to the doctor! The headaches and dizziness. > It was horrible. Guest guest
Hi Bobby, I am getting better, slowly. It has not been a miraculous fix though. Compared to the everyday headaches that I 'was' having...I am much better off now. I have had a few much less intense headaches since I had the surgery. They have not been nearly as bad as before. And not nearly as often! Before having the surgery, it had gotten to the point that I was having the headaches everyday. I also have degenerative discs. The way that my doctor explained it is this... 'degenrative discs' is just part of the description of the condition as a whole. Its all linked together with ruptured/bulging discs, arthritic discs ect....its just a description of the aging process. Everyones discs degenerate over time from age. Its just that it happens to some of us sooner than others. (I am 37, by the way) I can also tell you this...if you smoke...stop! I was a smoker for 20+ years. 'One of the discs' that they fused 10 weeks ago, was actually a failed fusion from a previous surgery 9 years ago. I had no idea that the bone never healed. (I was a smoker, and they told me that smoking would interfere with bone healing) So, when the surgeon went into my neck to fix the next disc this time, he ended up seeing that the first surgery never completely healed and had to do 2 instead of just 1. Needless to say, I found out the hard way that smoking indeed DOES interfere with bone healing. I havent smoked since this most recent surgery. So far, so good from what the xrays have shown them. I will go back again at the end of this month. The first fusion (9 yrs ago) was done by a different surgeon that did NOT do follow up xrays after the surgery. The surgeon that I have now, is being very attentive to making sure that I heal this time since he knows that I have a failed fusion in my past. Please also realize that on top of this mess, that I have double curved scoliosis and had a harrington rod put in my upper spine when I was a pre-teen SO...there may be more issues going on that have caused me to still have headaches. I have ALOT of shoulder and shoulder blade pain that radiates up into my neck sometimes and I think its related to the scoliosis....it tends to give me a headache when this happens. In other words, I think I may have more than one headache reason happening. (I hope that makes sense) I've had more than one doctor refer to me as 'a complicated patient' lol.... You may have the surgery done and be like a new person. One of my friends had a cervical disc fused and she said that she feels like a new person! The most important thing is finding the very best spinal surgeon in your area. What area are you in if you dont mind me asking? I'm in south Georgia. Hope I helped you a little. Please feel free to ask anything you want, I would love to help if I can. Email off list or on the list, whichever you prefer. Guest guest
Hi Pete, Did you have surgery on your neck or did your neck just get better? I have been having major issues with my neck, with those horrible migraine type headaches but my neuro said they will not do surgery on my neck unless I have pain & numbness in my arm (because of a herinated disc I believe). NOt that I want anymore spine surgery, but I can't live with these headaches! I have 3 bulging discs, osteoarthritis, facet disease and spondylosis in my neck. Guest guest
If it were me, I would absolutely go to someone else. It would be a spinal specialist, and let him do an MRI to find out exactly what is going on. A normal 'xray' can only show you so much. You need to know exactly what is there before letting a chiro continue to mess with your neck.
