Guest guest
Dear Members, I just wanted to say I have seen some wonderful, well-thought out advice in today's postings. Regarding progression (no one can predict that), surgery for young children, exercises, etc. It is nice to get back to the " basics " of our purpose, and that is to share our own personal experiences and share our knowledge with others. I like what I am seeing.....we are back on track!
Guest guest
Hi Becky, there are definitely repo moms on this board - that is moms that used aggressive repositioning to correct the head shape, and were able to skip banding. At 5 mo you have a little time to continue this, but by 6 mo babies are generally too mobile to stay where you put them. Where did you go for a consultation? Do you have any pictures that show the flatness/asymmetry? if you want to post pics to the photos area you can get opinions from the moms on this board about your child's head. If it really is mild there are parents who decided not to band and were happy with the decision. Since your daughter is still young you can delay the decision a little if you want to, but it is best to start as soon as you can, and definitely before 1 year old. Many people set 6 mo as the deadline for deciding if repo is sufficient of if banding is needed. Photos can help document your progress. Also asymmetry is more obvious in the mirror, so it is a good idea to look at your childs head in the mirror to get a good idea of what is going on. Most babies adjust to banding very quickly and continue to be as happy as ever, so I wouldn't hesitate to band if it is needed. take care. -christine sydney 19 mo starband grad > > Hello, > > I just joined the group and am looking for advise. Guest guest
Thanks so much for your response. My husband and I are having opposing opinions. I am leaning towards banding and he is not. It is not a matter of financial obligation...it is rather can we emotionally handle our daughter in a helmet for the next 6 to 9 months. We live in Dayton, Ohio so the only place that even offers helmets is Orpro and they offer the starband. I have tried to take pictures, but it just does not seem to catch the asymmetry, but I will try again and see if I cannot be somewhat computer savoy and post it. It looks like Sydney used the starband...how did you like it? When did she start wearing it? How long did she have to wear it? How quickly did you see results? Would you do it again? What was the hardest part of pursuing helmet therapy? Thanks in advance for your help. Becky > > > > Hello, > > > > I just joined the group and am looking for advise. Guest guest
Hi Becky, your child won't be in a band nearly that long unless the case is very severe. Since you say it is mild, you could easily be done in 2 or 3 months. It all depends on how fast your baby grows, but 9 mo is very atypical. I would say 3 mo is pretty normal. Also Ohio has two cranial technologies offices (www.cranialtech.com). It would require some driving, but they have an excellect reputation. My daughter wore a starband, so I know those can be good too - but it depends on the ortho. Maybe someone else on the board has used the one you mention. Sydney wore her band for 5 mo (which is longer than average), from age 5 to 10 mo. She had excellent correction and we saw results after only 2 weeks. Banding her was definitely the right decision. It wasn't hard at all, exept for me getting used to the idea. Taking her out at first was difficult (for me to deal with) but I quickly got over that. No one was rude to us at all, her head changed week by week, and I could see that this was good for her. After 4 mo out of the band we had her measured again, and there was no additional improvment. So I'm really glad that we got the correction we did in the band, because without it I assume her head would still be very misshapen. -christine sydney 19 mo starband grad > > > > > > Hello, > > > > > > I just joined the group and am looking for advise.
