Dr. Koh, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health, provided opening remarks at the event and read a World Hepatitis Day proclamation on behalf of President Obama. July 28 was selected in honor of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the hepatitis B virus. Documentation of multiple hepatitis B outbreaks among adults with diabetes, mostly in long-term care facilities, prompted the ACIP hepatitis working group to consider the issue. Read more.
