World Hepatitis Day 2011

July 28, 2011, marked the first official “World Hepatitis Day” established by

the World Health Organization, which was recognized in an historic event at the

White House. Dr. Koh, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health, provided

opening remarks at the event and read a World Hepatitis Day proclamation on

behalf of President Obama. July 28 was selected in honor of Dr. Baruch Blumberg,

who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the hepatitis B virus. Read more

Why the CIA's Vaccine Ruse is a Setback for Global Health

The revelation that the HBV vaccine was used as a ruse by the CIA to get DNA

evidence from [Osama bin Laden’s] children drew a quick and angry response from

health experts: Medecins Sans Frontieres called the operation " a dangerous abuse

of medical care. " The Washington Post warned that the CIA's " reckless tactics

could have catastrophic consequences " and Time magazine outlined three reasons

ACIP Considers Hepatitis B Vaccine for Adults with Diabetes

Hepatitis B vaccination of adults with diabetes could potentially prevent more

than 5,000 hepatitis B infections, according to the CDC Advisory Committee on

Immunization Practices (ACIP). Documentation of multiple hepatitis B outbreaks

among adults with diabetes, mostly in long-term care facilities, prompted the

ACIP hepatitis working group to consider the issue. Read more.

Hepatitis B Interventions Prove Decisive in New Policies for Treating Millions

in U.S., China

With hepatitis B infecting as many as 10% of people of Asian descent, operations

researchers at Stanford University collaborated with liver transplant surgeon

Dr. Sam So to develop mathematical models that verified the cost effectiveness

of hepatitis B interventions. These interventions now successfully screen,

treat, and vaccinate millions of Asian and Pacific Islander adults in the U.S.
