Guest guest
Hi, We just had Nora (age 14) to her rehab doctor (I believe her official specialty is physical medicine and rehabilitation) for a follow up. Nora was diagnosed with CMT about 2 years ago. She has broken 3 bones in about the last 3 years. One was her upper arm bone, which was not a complete break (she was able to wear a sling). The next was a metataursal (sp?) in her foot and she did have to wear a cast for that. She was just walking at school when that happened. And the latest was a hairline fracture again in her foot, for which she was not casted since she wears AFOs. The doctor said that Nora's bones are obviously weaker than normal and she recommended that Nora take calcium. She didn't think a bone density scan would be all that useful as she feels that we already know there is a problem. She recommended trying to avoid falling. I asked her if she thought that weak bones was a symptom of CMT and she said she had not seen that in her CMT patients (tho like many of you have noticed), she indicated that while she has some CMT patients, she hasn't had a great many. I mentioned this group and she agreed that asking you all would be a good idea. I had mentioned that I regularly read the posts of this group and that I hadn't really noticed people mentioning this problem. So do any of you, or members of your family with CMT, have problems with weak bones? (Nora is the only person in our families with CMT.) Thanks, P.S. How do I get to read the Newsletters? I couldn't find them in the CMT homepage. --
