Announcing the decision on Saturday, a day before its foundation day, SGPGIMS director, Dr AK Mahapatra said that the decision has been taken in view of growing disease menace over the past few years. According to Dr Mahapatra, around 4% of Indian population is suffering with Hepatitis-B -- infection of liver with a virus -- and hence needs urgent attention. The SGPGIMS itself has around 1,200 patients of Hepatitis-B registered with it. Dr Mahapatra said that the institute would be engaging itself on some highly specialised research on Hepatitis-B.
