Guest guest
Hi all - As many her e know I had cervical fusion C4-7) about 3 years ago and it has provided amazing relief to the loss of use and strength of my left arm. But as we all know nothing comes without its drawbacks and side effects. I get these periods of intense pain in my shoulders and arms sometimes and sometimes it even affects my stomach in a manner it seems I am getting nauseated and in addition sometimes it feels like my head is feeling lightheaded..I have thought about it being not neck related (i.e. circulation/cardiac) but all that checks out okay. I will often after these spells go for a few days will have that kink in the neck feeling where it just does not seem my stiffness uncomfortable feeling in my neck will ever stretch out...then I will get a loud audible and shuttering click as my neck adjusts - feels like a stuck disk position is sliding into place (I am guessing here but that is how it feels) and get some immediate relief followed after a short time with lessening of the symptoms....I guess I am just looking for anyone who may have similar symptoms to commiserate with or gain a perspective of where this may be leading...hopefully not more surgery... P.S. it is saddening and heartening (that a celeb is among us) that Peyton Manning had cervical fusion this week... Praying for pain free days for you all. mark

Guest guest
Hey Mark, I too have had a cervical fusion, one level.  I very recently had carpal tunnel surgery on one of my hands and will have it on the other as soon as this one heals.  During interviewing docs for this, a couple of them said my residual pain in my neck, shoulders, arms may resolve after these surgeries.  However, and isn't there always a however, since I have had carpel tunnel for such a long time it may take up to 6 months for all the pain related to the carpal tunnel to go away.  Since the carpal tunnel was severe and had nerve involvement, recovery will probably be on the 6 month side.  Also another symptom I was experiencing was my muscle in my arm would contract and would draw my hand/arm up.  This started right after my cervical fusion.  The odd thing was the docs thought prior to my surgery that my carpal tunnel was minor, and only after the first surgery did they realize the extent of it. Debbie From: Rochelle <rccoc1977@...> Subject: Re: pain medication issues neck pain Date: Friday, September 9, 2011, 12:46 PM  Hi Mark, Is there any activity you remember doing that leads up to these episodes? Could it be associated with muscle spasm from being in a weird position during work or sleep or overdoing working with your arms? I remember having a lot of cracking in my neck. I think that was from spasmed muscles pulling my cervical vertebra tight together. And when I turned my neck the tendons snapped across vertebral joints. But I don't know for sure that's what it was. However, when my neck muscles relaxed and strengthened after I improved my posture, I didn't have that snapping any more and still don't. Guest guest
so then could it be that my hand curling up into a ball while i'm sleeping is more from carpel tunnel instead of my neck problems? Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are. M. Forbes

Guest guest
, I have been told by a couple of docs that it could be my carpal tunnel or I may need another neck surgery.  But I am 1 week post-op today and the muscle tensing up and causing my hand/lower arm to curve up is still occurring, but on a much, much lower level.  My hand doc said that my carpal tunnel was a lot worse than the testing showed and that my nerves and whatever else in there were stacked and compacted.  I am experiencing a lot of nerve pain in my hand/lower arm for the last 1 1/2 days, but the pain seems to be lessening a little more.  According the to doc's office, (which they got back to me within a couple of hours,) this is normal for what I had and should lessen.  Debbie From: Andy24747 <andy24747@...> Subject: Re: Re: pain medication issues neck pain Date: Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 9:21 PM  so then could it be that my hand curling up into a ball while i'm sleeping is more from carpel tunnel instead of my neck problems? Guest guest
Hello Mark,  I have 2 collapsed discs in my neck from degeneration. Often if I hold my head in the same position for more than a few minutes or use my arms too much I will get a weird popping sound when I do move my neck. It is not the same as the cracking sound of knuckles etc. It sounds and feels as if one facet has overlapped another and popped loose when I move my head. After this happens I will often get a bad headache and nausea. I have found that a tube sock filled with rice and heated in the microwave works well around my neck to alleviate the pain somewhat and placed on the forehead it helps with my headaches. I wish I could provide more insight into this but I just know how I feel. Jane H. Guest guest
Thanks Jane - I went to the surgeon today for follow-up and he says the fusion C4-7 is firm and good and that the issues I am having with my " neck " and arm etc...must be shoulder related because my fusion is strong and the spacing is great! the noise and stuck feeling he had no answer for...I will try the heat for sure...  Thanks mark ________________________________ From: Jane <borlan9191962@...> neck pain Sent: Thursday, September 15, 2011 1:13 PM Subject: Re: Re: pain medication issues  Hello Mark,  I have 2 collapsed discs in my neck from degeneration.
