HAWAII: " Hawaii to Offer Free Hepatitis B, C Screening "

Associated Press (07.25.11)

On Thursday, the state Department of Health will mark World Hepatitis Day by

offering free screenings for hepatitis B and C. An estimated 1 percent to 3

percent of Hawaiians are living with hepatitis B and approximately 23,000 are

living with hepatitis C. HBV is spread through blood, semen and infected body

fluids and HCV is blood-borne. According to officials, hepatitis B and C are the

most-common known causes of liver cancer, and Hawaii has the highest liver

cancer rate in the nation.
