10m Pakistanis suffering from hepatitis

RAWALPINDI: Over 10 million people in Pakistan are suffering from hepatitis ‘B’

and ‘C’ while globally the victims of disease are 430 million.

Medical experts said this while delivering lectures at a two-day symposium

“Portal Hypertension, Bridging the Gap”, organised by Foundation University

Medical College (FUMC) in collaboration with Pakistan Society for Study of Liver

Diseases (PSSLD).

Eminent doctors and professors of medicines presented their research papers on

hepatitis, its causes and remedial measures.

FUMC Principal Major General Ashraf Ali Malhi who chaired the inaugural session

of the symposium said that South Asian countries were badly affected by

hepatitis.

He said liver-related diseases had increased dramatically in Pakistan during the

last decade. He suggested private-public sector partnership to eradicate menace

of hepatitis and urged academia to play its role and find new techniques to

overcome the disease.

“Use of alcohol, drugs, blood transfusion, used syringes, shaving blades and use

of contaminated drinking water are the main causes of hepatitis,” he added. He

stressed need for awareness about preventive measures against the disease.

Dr Waseem Jafri, Dr Saeed Hamid, Prof Masood Siddique, Dr Shoiab Shafi, Dr

Muzzafar Latif Gill, Dr Javed Aslam Butt, Dr Noorul Iman, Prof Najeebul Haq,

Prof AA Durrani, Prof Muhammad Salih and others spoke on the occasion.
