Guest guest
Lee, My father became something of a recluse because of weak bowels and the inability to predict when he would need to go or if he could make it to a bathroom in time. I would seriously consider the colostomy for myself, if it meant staying active or becoming homebound. We knew a young girl (early 20's) who worked at our local MDA office who required a colostomy after a problem in an operation for something else. (She did not have CMT or any other neuro-muscular disease.) There is no way I could tell she was wearing the colostomy appliance if I did not know the story. She looked normal and as beautiful as ever. She handled it all with grace and dignity, considering she went into the operation without one, and woke up afterward with one, and I think it was due to a surgeon's mistake.... She told me once or twice that the whole ordeal made her appreciate how much the MDA patients she worked for went thru. Best wishes in a decision. If the bowel weakness is serious and affecting your ability to live life to the fullest, then this would be a good option for you.
