Hi,

I am attending a baby shower on Saturday, and

wondered what are the best sources of the most

current information for new paretns?

I have heard the Baby Whisperier is a

good book, and I have learned much on this

site. I would like to type up some

great web sites, so she can reserch for herself,

and stay enightened.

And and all help, accepted.

Thank you!

You might just make up a "further reading" card and slip it in your gift. I have found that not everyone welcomes my knowledge, and then I have found others who really, really want it. Stay safe and just put a note with your gift, IMO.

Great question! I haven't put much tought to enlightning a new mom only because I haven't been pregnant in 6 years. ff the top of my head I would recommend "What to expect when your expecting" and "What to expect the toddler years" both of these books contain alot of info for mom and baby/child. I plan to pass them down to my own daughter someday. Hope this helps Jackiechironlightone <chironlightone@...> wrote: Hi,I am attending a baby shower on Saturday, and wondered what are the best sources of the most current information for new paretns?I have heard the Baby Whisperier is a good book, and I have learned much on thissite. "How to have a healthy child in spite of your doctor"

"What the doctor won't tell you about childhood vaccinations"

The Baby Whisperer is a great resource! I've also read Baby Wise; it's also a wonderful book. The only thing I disliked about Baby Wise was that the authors mention the benefits of vaccinating children...This chapter is found in the newer edition of the book...maybe you can find an older edition of it. I think I'm kind of balanced between the two techniques in the way I raise my babies. Hi Dona,

Being a no-vax mom of two, and recently having had a child (three

weeks ago), my opinion is don't bring up the vaccine issue at the

shower. That day is for the mom-to-be/new mommy and baby, and it

should be fun. Don't interject controversy into this special day, let

it be light and fun. The mother is going to be euphoric, and will

probably not hear half of what you say, anyway! It would be better to

approach the vaccine issue on another day, or get her email address

and ask if you can forward her some helpful websites to look at later.

That being said, there is a plethora of reading material out there

that is awesome for expecting/new moms, if you're looking for gift

ideas. Here is a list of recommends and *not* recommends, based on

input of three midwives, myself and several other " crunchy " moms that

I associate with. These are recommendations based on natural child

birth and raising your child in the " crunchy " way, including

Attachment Parenting. Keep in mind, these are not all my personal

recommendations, but a compilation I've made based on input I've

received. I've heard good things about The Baby Whisperer, I should

add that to my list, too.

If I had to choose out of this entire list one or two things to give,

my three very favorites are " How to Raise a Healthy Child In Spite of

Your Doctor " by S. Mendelshohn, MD, " Gentle Birth Choices " by

Barbara Harper, and " Mothering Magazine " -- a year subscription to

this would make a NICE gift!

First the *NOT* Recommendeds:

What to Expect When You're Expecting by Arlene Elsenberg (my husband

even refers to this book as " What to needlessly panic about at every

turn.)

The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy by Vicki Lovine

Baby Wise by Ezzo

Okay, now the Recommendeds, I'll break them down by category, *** = I

HIGHLY recommend:

Pregnancy and Birth

*** " Ina May's Guide to Childbirth " by Ina May Gaskin, CPM

*** " Birthing From Within " by Pam England, CNM

*** " Gentle Birth Choices " by Barbara Harper RN, CD, CCE

(www.waterbirth.org) - not just for water birthers!

" Special Delivery " by Rahima Baldwin

" Heart and Hands " by

" Active Birth " by Janet Balaskas

" The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth " by Henci Goer

Children at Birth:

" Mom, Dad and I are Having a Baby " by Ann Malecki (out of print,

may find at 2nd hand stores, ebay auctions or library)

" Welcome With Love " by Jeni Overend

Breastfeeding:

" The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding " by LaLeche League

" The Breastfeeding Book " by Sears, M.D.

" Bestfeeding " by Suzanne Arms

Postpartum:

" After the Baby is Born " by Robin Lim

Parenting:

*** " How to Raise a Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor " by

S. Mendelshohn, MD (EXCELLENT!!! Written by an Pediatrician that

debunks vaccines, too!)

*** " Vaccine Safety Manual for Concerned Families and Health

Practitioners: Guide to Immunization Risks and Protection " by Neil Z.

" Smart Medicine for Healthier Children " by Zang (I have not read,

recommended by my midwife)

" 25 Things Every Mother Should Know " by Martha Sears

" Natural Family Living " by Peggy O'Mara

" The Baby Book " by Sears, MD

" An Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants " by Bove, ND

" The Vital Touch " by Sharon Heller, Ph.D.

Magazines:

" Mothering Magazine " - a natural magazine with special issues on

Vaccinations and Circumcision (www.mothering.com) Can subscribe to the

printed version, online version, or both (I get both, LOVE THIS

MAG!!!)

Useful Websites if you want to include them with your card or something:

Circumcision info: www.nocirc.org

Vaccine info: www.nvic.org

Most Popular Baby Names: www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

I should note that I do NOT agree with Dr. Sears on his vaccine

stance. He pushes a " selective " schedule that I find horrifying. I

am strictly a NO VAXer, and you can't convince me that even one

vaccine is safe for anyone, much less a newborn. However, if you

ignore the vaccine portions, his book have some really helpful

information for a new parent that is panicking in the middle of the

night. LOL

I'm not sure if this was what you're looking for, but I hope this list helps!

Sincerely,
