The Hepatitis B Community Loses Cherished Friend and Advocate

This is a sad day for the hepatitis B community. Fox Chase Cancer Center Senior

Advisor and Hepatitis B Foundation Co-founder and Trustee Distinguished Scholar,

Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg passed away on April 5, 2011. His discovery of the

hepatitis B virus and invention of the first vaccine against hepatitis B, which

resulted in the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1976, have been among the most

important in the history of science and medicine. Read more.

Test All Chemo Patients for Hepatitis B

Every cancer patient should be tested for hepatitis B infections before starting

chemotherapy, reported an oncologist from Memorial Sloan Kettering at the recent

National Comprehensive Cancer Network Conference. With 5% to 40% of hepatitis B

reactivation cases that occur due to the chemo’s immunosuppressive effects

resulting in death, testing for HBV can be lifesaving. Read more.

HBV Doubles Death Risk Compared to HCV, but Tenofovir Seems Protective

People with chronic HBV infections have twice the risk of dying from

liver-related diseases compared to those with chronic HCV, including those

co-infected with HIV, according to researchers at s Hopkins. The

introduction of tenofovir drug therapy, however, has significantly reduced the

risk of death from HBV regardless of whether an individual is co-infected with

HIV or not. Read more.

Acute Hepatitis B Incidence Double In People With Diabetes

Acute hepatitis B is nearly twice as prevalent among adults with diabetes-

particularly those aged 23-59 years – when compared to those without diabetes‚

according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Read more.

HBV Infection Decreases Risk of Liver Metastasis in Colorectal Cancer Patients

Now some good news about hepatitis B infections! A new report looks at the link

between HBV infection and liver metastasis of colorectal cancer. Results showed

a decrease in the number of metastases in the HBV infected group (14.2%)

compared to the non-infected group (28.2%). The authors suggest that HBV

infection could be used as a prognostic factor in terms of liver metastasis
