Liver disease ranks as the second most common cause of morbidity and mortality

in HIV-infected persons receiving antiretroviral therapy. Liver disease-related

deaths in this population most commonly result from chronic infection with

hepatitis B and/or hepatitis C virus and management of these conditions in

HIV-infected persons requires careful consideration, balancing the potential

benefits of therapy with the potential for significant treatment-related adverse

effects, viral resistance, and/or hepatitis flares.
