The most prominent of them are cancer, diseases related to heart and prostrate. But with the passing of years a large number of other diseases have come to the fore. The most notable of them are hepatitis B and hepatitis C. It has been learnt from the recent studies that almost 45 million Indians are suffering from hepatitis B and 15 million from hepatitis C. The number is indeed horrific and is increasing steadily throughout the country. How can these diseases be prevented? According to experts the precise application of vaccines and elementary modifications in hygiene and caution during blood transfusions can put a check on the growth of these diseases. But at the same time there is the need of a good consciousness also. Do you know that most of the patients of hepatitis B and hepatitis C fail to discern the diseases at the right time? This makes it difficult for the general practitioners or doctors of medicine to treat the patients. Never forget that almost a million people worldwide get affected from hepatitis B each year and die eventually. This is the official figure. Well, people can become conscious if the pertinent organizations adopt programs to inform them of the causes and effects of these diseases and how to check them. In this regard the Department of Family Welfare of the Government of Delhi in association with G.B. Pant Hospital and Maulana Azad Medical College recently organized an awareness program at the college premise to make people conscious and to observe Hepatitis Day. The program was successful and rose to a new height owing to the active participation of students from over 20 schools of the national capital. Speaking on this .K. Sarin, Professor and Head of Gastroenterology Department at the hospital, who is also the pioneer of the present campaign for hepatitis awareness, said, “The main aim on this occasion is to ensure we spread awareness among children about the prevention of hepatitis and to boost the Indian mindset to encourage organ donation, which can save the lives of many people”.
