Guest guest
Hi Harold Thanks for your kind response. May I ask you to share any other thing concerning your treatment which you think may be valuable to us, your fellow RAers? Guest guest
Hi Ken, I first got RA about 6 years ago at age 74. It started as flu like symptoms that finally got me into the hospital with pneumonia and RA both at the same time. I was started on 40 mg Prednisone daily and then added Arava with a loading dose followed by daily pills. The Prednisone quickly helped me enough so I could at least hobble from bed to the bathroom and then I got to where I could function reasonably well. I didn’t notice any real help from the Arava but I was reducing Prednisone to about 30 mg daily so maybe the Arava was helping. We switched to Methotrexate after a few months with not much more help even at 20 mg daily. A few months later we added Remicade at 3 mg/kg and worked up to 6 mg/kg every 6 weeks. Finally I was able to get completely off Prednisone and was able to function pretty normally. We then reduced both Methotrexate and Remicade so that now I’m on 12.5 mg of Methotrexate weekly and 3 mg/kg Remicade every 8 weeks. After about 7 weeks my joints start to feel a little uncomfortable but not really painful. If I took more medication I might be able to get rid of the discomfort but I’d rather have occasional discomfort than to be overmedicated. Everyone seems to be different with RA so what works for one may well not work for another. Each person needs to become a partner with their doctor in determining the best treatment for them. I am happy with my treatment and I hope everyone else gets to a similar position. God bless.
